The Witness
His smile is so cold. All I can do is watch in fear as he tucks his gun back into his coat. I can't tell if this is a nightmare or reality. I can't move, I can't scream, I barely even feel like I'm breathing. And just like that my phone goes off in its normal loud buzz. He whips his head in my direction. I quickly turn my buzzing phone off and run. It all seems to be happening in slow motion, my screaming at me to move, my legs trying to pick up speed, and my eyes trying to fight back the tears.
I just saw a man get murdered.
I don't know who that was that killed him and I don't know why he did it. But I don't want to stick around to find out. I look over my shoulder only to have my heart stop. The man is quicker than I thought or maybe I'm slower than I thought. Immediately as I look back he grabs my wrist and swings me around to look at him. I desperately search the dark street but the only thing I see is a bunch of street lamps dimly lighting small sections of the sidewalk. There's not a single person in sight. This is it I'm going to die. I'm going to be murdered in the middle of the night on a random street. But I'm not going to go down without a fight.
I thrust my arms around furiously trying to loosen his grip on my wrist and just like that he grabs my other wrist. He quickly twists one of my arms behind my back and I can't help but scream a little in pain.
"What do you want?"
He doesn't bother to say anything back. I wait a few more long seconds just in case he might say something. He lets go of my wrists and I expect him to turn the other way and start running but instead, he doesn't do anything. I try to run again but this time everything turns black. It's like if the night sky didn't have a moon or stars.
I'm so confused, am I unconscious? Or maybe I'm dead. It's highly possible he killed me but is this what it's like when you die? Those were the last thoughts I had before everything started to get fuzzy.
"You should have killed her when you had the chance! Boss hates witnesses even if she is just a girl you should have gotten rid of her."
"Get off my back, I can do whatever I want."
Their voices set off a wave of pain through my head, they're way too loud. They both sound furious with each other. I guess I'm not dead, I was probably just knocked out for a while or something. I have to fight the urge to grab my head, the pain is killing me. I probably have a bump or bruise there, he probably hit me. If I stay still and pretend I'm still unconscious maybe I'll be able to escape.
"Boss is going to kill you and I'm not going to help you out this time. Also, you were sloppy, you didn't clean up the body and you let someone see you!"
"I didn't clean up the body cause she saw me so I had to chase after her. So why don't you just screw off."
The second one's voice sounds a little higher and younger. I'm guessing he's the one who murdered that man. The first one definitely has to be in his 50s, his voice is gruff and kind of scary. It sounds like he's in the driver's seat and the younger one is in the back of the van with me. I jolt up as we hit a bump and grab my head in pain. I was so occupied listening to their conversation I hadn't even realized we were in a car, more specifically a van. The younger one quickly takes out his gun and points it directly at my head.
"Move and I'll shoot you."
Ice runs through my veins and just like on that street I'm frozen in fear.
"Please just let me go."
I don't know what else to say, pleading feels like my only option at the moment. The older one just chuckles quietly to himself which sends chills all throughout me. The younger one just studies my face and slowly lowers his gun.
"You don't seem like the type of girl to try something stupid. Just stay put we're almost to where we're supposed to go."
"What are we going to do there?"
My question is simple but I'm so scared about what they're going to answer with. If they were going to kill me I imagine they would do it in a remote location which might be where we're heading.
"We're going to see what boss wants to do with you."
I try not to look scared as he replies but still I gulp a little. It wasn't purposeful it's just something I do when I'm scared.
It takes another five minutes for us to reach our destination. The car stops suddenly and the younger one jolts me to my feet. He keeps his gun pointed at my head as we follow the older one towards a huge building. Ivy leaves grow all over it, I see more plants than building, to be honest.
We make it through the buildings first doors, which is locked by a keypad. I'm too nervous to try and strain my neck to see what the code is. A million questions are racing through my head but at the same time, I'm trying to make a mental list of all these doors and codes. So that when I get a chance to escape I'll make it. We walk through more and more doors all locked with codes until we finally arrive in an open room. Some couches are put together to make a square a little coffee table is in the center and a black rug lays under the table. It actually looks quite comfortable and not how I imagined. From the oustised, this place looks abandoned, but on the inside, it's actually quite nice.
I expect them to make me sit down on the couch and wait for their "boss." But instead we keep walking until we reach a door, this one isn't locked by a key code. The older one knocks on it softly as if he's scared about who or what's inside it.
"Come in."
The voice is deep but it's not rough like the older man's voice. His voice is as smooth as silk. Maybe he's nicer than these two. Maybe he'll help me convince his boss to let me go. Then I turn to the other two men, they both look nervous.....scared even. Which can only mean one thing, this man has to be their boss.
And that thought makes me even more scared.
