Chapter 1

Time stood still as she stood there looking at the polished surface of the casket. She stood there with the red rose in her hand. She couldn’t tell id she was crying anymore or did it was the rain. She watched as they lowered the large box into the ground. When it finally stopped she dropped the flower into the hole. She backed up some then. She closed her eyes and looked up at the heavens. The rain picked up and she just let it pelt her. Now what was she going to do. She tool in a deep breath and lowered her head then Taking one last look into the hole. The tears began to fall. She was alone in this world again.

She zipped the zipper on her jacket as she descended the steps of the graveyard. She made it to the last step and froze in mid step. There he was standing there under his umbrella looking up at her as if he wasn’t the reason that she was alone. When he hadn’t showed up to the funeral she had hoped he had planned on not coming back. She couldn’t get that lucky could she.

He was walking towards her now. Her blood felt like it was on fire. She watched his face and all she wanted to do was choke him. How dare he sit there and act like he was hurt that she was gone.people were scattering about to try and get out of the rain. He used that moment to put his arm around her shoulder and pull her closer to him.she stiffened at this. He knew that she didn’t like this and used it against her.

“I will miss her.” he said to her. She didn’t say a word to him. She didn’t trust herself not to say something that would set him off as she often did to save her mother from his temper. He had a habit of hitting the bars after he clocked out and came home wasted. He would grab her mother and it would start. She would throw herself on her mother to protect her. This last fit had been the las one she could handle.

He showed up at the house around midnight, and beat them both. Claiming that they were the reason that he was so unhappy. She took most of the beating that time. It only took two good hits to the head and her mother was out. She put up a better fight she guessed. When she got home the next day from school she found her mother hanging from the banister of the second floor just hanging there. She had to call it in and she was left with him. She found blood in the bathroom. When she went to throw up from the sight of her mother. Moments before she took her life she left one message.

“I’M FINALLY FREE.”

The police asked her many questions. She told them just enough to keep her safe, she knew he would be back from one of his many business trips. She hasn’t talked to him since he got back into town. She knew that it would be a matter of time before he started asking her to tell him what she had said to the police. Honestly him being as quiet as he was was starting to scare her.

He opened the passenger door and all but shoved her into the car. She watched as he slid into the car. She saw the dark look on his face. She turned her head and begun looking out the window. She felt herself start to panic. He had just started the car when his phone rang. He answered around the second ring.

“ what did you find out?” he asked the person on the other line. She glanced over out of the corner of her eyes and seen the slight smile on his face. The smile was gone in a matter of moments.

“ well fix it!” he all but screamed into the phone. He looked at her then the look he gave her made her skin crawl. She wondered what the phone call was about. To her surprise he looked at her

“ the dumb bitches death was ruled a suicide.” he chuckled then.

She took in a sharp breathe then at his words.

“I have friends in high places even if I had done it I can walk. You should remember that.” he told her as he speeds down the road. He cleared his throat then.

“ you thought that taking your jacket off and showing a few bruises that you would be able to get away from me. Your wrong, you will never be free of me.” he said to her.

Again she didn’t say anything to him.

“We will be moving now when we get back get your things,” he said.

By things it was just their clothes he didn’t leave any room for anything. She did however wedge a photo of her mother and her in the bag under a hoodie that she had packed. He was standing at the base of the steps. He wore a dark look on his face now. She felt the urge to run then. She didn’t know which was worse taking the beating that she had a feeling that one was coming or deal with the silent man in front of her.

She wasn’t prepared for his reaction he grabbed her arm and dragged her from the steps of the staircase. She tumbled to the ground, she tried to protect herself from the blows he was kicking her now. She tried to curl up into a ball trying to protect her core from the impact of his boots.

“You stupid girl how dare you!” he started but stopped as he kicked her in the head. She tried to stay quiet but the pain was becoming to great she let out a small scream. This must have amused him the beating became more violent. The pain was becoming unbearable, she wished he would stop or just kill her. Whichever came first. He was laughing now as he came to a stop. He was breathing heavy. She didn’t move or make a sound. She hoped that he would leave her alone. She heard his boots on the wooden floor as he walked away. She heard him in the kitchen then. The sound of the can he opened was her answer. Getting up was harder than she thought it was going to be.

As she uncurled herself the pain shot through every fiber of her muscles. She rolled to her side then slowly got on her knees. She felt like she was gasping for air. They surge of pain hit her and she faltered as she pushed herself off the ground. She made it to her feet. She staggered and swayed. She leaned down and collected her bag she had just put it back on when he came back. She kept her gaze on the floor. She didn’t want to upset him any further.

“I hope you have learned your place if you talk to anyone other than me about what goes on in this house it will be worse on you.” he said to her smugly. She stood there still looking down. She felt the tears threatening to fall she didn’t wasn’t him to know how much pain that she is in.

“Yes sir.” she said with her head still lowered.

He shoved her towards the door she took a step outside and knew that she would never be able to return here. He would see to that. They had moved many times this was nothing new to her. She was actually surprised it wasn’t sooner, they had lived here for a little over a year. He would say it was for work she knew the real reason. It was the beatings she knew the neighbors knew. They heard the screams she has been called to the office at school because her got carried away and left bruises on her face she always wanted to say something and was scared. She would smile at them and tell them she fell or something like that to get them to stop asking.

She only remembered one time when they didn’t believe her. Later that week a case worker showed up at their home .he slacked off for about a week and then they moved a week later. He knew he was being watched then and once they got settled into the new house. The beatings would start again.

She looked at herself in the mirror and blanced. She hasn’t realized how bad she looked one side of her face was swollen and the bruise was only getting darker. She saw the dried blood then on the side of her head. She didn’t dare touch it. They had been driving now for over three hours, when he pulled into a gas station. He looked over at her then,

“Stay in the car and don’t talk to anyone.” he commanded he didn’t wait for a reply he got out and started inside. She looked around she put her hand on the door handle and had every intention to open the door and make a run for it. She would rather take her chances on the streets then to have to live with him. She knew every reason she should do it, but she couldn’t she just couldn’t do it. Fear won over reason she took her hand away from the knob sat it in her lap. He walked out a moment later. He had his phone to his ear as he strode back to the car. She didn’t say or make a sound when he slid back inside.

“ we will be to our new home soon.tomorrow we will be signing you up into school” he told her. She glanced at herself again and wondered what kind of lie she would have to tell these new teachers.

He had everything planned for her by the time they reached the new house she knew just what to say and how to act, He also explained that this place was like no others they would be living among demons, and that even some of her classmates where a mixture of humans demons and even half demons. This new house was surprisingly big she followed him inside she looked around the room as they walked inside and was surprised to see it was fully furnished. No wonder he didn’t want to bring anything the didn’t need any of it.

As they walked further into the home he turned on some lights, she felt numb yes this was new and yes everything looked nice and polished. It was going to be her prison, she wasn’t allowed to have friends she learned that lesson the hard way. She paid dearly for that and she never wanted to go through that again. She let herself get distracted in thought she hasn’t realized that he had stopped walking and wasn't now waiting on her to answer him. She had almost walked into him and she knew that would have made him made at her, he yelled at her and pulled her out of her stupor along with causing her to flinch and that cause the pain to rip through her body.

“Stupid girl are you even listening to a word i was saying to you?” he asked her. She could tell he was already starting to get irritated with her. She stood straight up and looked at him.

“Sorry i was distracted.” she said to him in a low voice. He took a step forward and she wanted to take a step back to get more distance between them. She resisted that urge and prepared for whatever action he was going to give her. He surprised her then, he walked over to her and placed a hand on her swollen cheek. He almost looked concerned,

“Are you feeling well? You’re a bit pale.” he asked her she blinked.

‘Did he hit his head at some point?’ she thought to herself

“Y…. yes i..i’m fine.” she stammered. She didn’t want to tell him the truth afraid he may get offended by what she said.

“Here let me show you your room.” he said to her as he pulled her behind him she was starting to get nervous now.

Why was he acting this way? She didn’t remember a time that he had ever acted this way. She followed him down a hallway to a staircase they started to go up the steps when she felt the waves of dizziness hit her. She swayed and stumbled she bumped into him then. She would have toppled down the stepped had he not stopped and grabbed her. He looked at the girl he was haphazardly holding and signed. She was such a pain no better than that worthless mother of hers.

“You’re so useless can’t even make it up some stairs.” he told her she didn’t say anything to him, she couldn’t even if she wanted to. She felt another wave of dizziness came across her and blacked out then. He grumbled then and picked her up to better carry her and took her up the last few steps he took a right and walked down the hall and stopped at a door that was to the left and opened it. He walked in and used his free arm to pull back the blankets he laid her down in the middle and took her shoes off before covering her u;. He had just closed the door when he felt the presence of another in the hallway.

“Are you going to tell me why you’re here or are you going to stand there and look at me?” he said in a cold chilling voice.

“The next meeting day will be held two days from now. Be ready there could be trouble.”she told him. He nodded his head.

The woman left as fast as she had come she always made his skin crawl. She had the personality of the dead. She was right though trouble was brewing he had known it for sometime now. The demon community was becoming unstable as the lost trust in their leaders and the humans around them. He had planned to move them their and when everything started to happen to kill the girl and her mother but the woman had done it for him. The only question is how to get rid of the girl she was a bit more troublesome than he originally thought.

He hasn’t always felt that way he had loved her once upon a time. Then she betrayed him she slept with one of his so called friends. When he found out he couldn’t stand to look at her much less touch her. She found out she was pregnant soon after He knew the child wasn’t his he tried to stay away from her as much as possible. If they had any public functions he would tolerate her he wouldn’t be disgraced by such a scandal. The whore would suffer for what she did to him. He walked down the hallway passed the steps to his room. He opened the door and started unbuttoning his shirt he discarded it on the floor and proceeded over to the bed, he sat down and untied one shoe and pulled it off then the other. He went to his suitcase and pulled out some gym shorts and walked across the room to his bathroom and turned on the shower. He stepped inside and let the water pelt his skin. He wept, he loved her damnit how could the bitch do this to him, with him of all people. He did everything for her she wasn’t lacking for anything, she wanted it he got it for her, then to leave him alone again with a bastard child that wasn’t even his He knew the girl wasn’t his she looked nothing like him. She looked like him.

He tried to forgive her, he tried but when he heard her that night talking to him. Telling him that she was going to pack her and the child’s things and leave him. He saw red, his true nature came out then he listened for a moment longer and when he found out where they were going to meet he told her he had to run to the office. He took that moment to meet him there instead of her. He was surprised to say the least,

“What are you doing here?” his friend asked him

“I could ask you the same thing.” he told him. They looked at each other for a moment his friend took a step back.

“Look I was going to tell you, it just all happened. I never wanted this to happen.” his friend started stammering out. He knew it was a lie he could smell it.

He couldn’t have her she belonged to him she was his wife. He was growling now,

“Don’t lie to me! You never planned to tell me anything. Did you know she planned to leave? Did you know that bastard child is yours?” he shouted out of rage.

“Yes i knew the girl was mine. I never thought she was going to leave you.” he told him

He lost it then he lunged at him now. His arm went into his chest, he would never forget the look on his face. The pain had his face contorted and he coughed blood as he retracted his hand,

“Forgive me.” his friend said as he collapsed to the ground. He watched as the heart in his hand took one last beat.

“Never.” was the last thing he said before he tossed the heart to the ground and walked away.

From that moment on he changed he would never bend to her wants or needs. He would make her pay for all that she put him through. He just wondered if she knew how much she hurt him. He planned to remind her everyday.

He turned the water off and stepped out of the shower, he wrapped the towel around his waist taking one hand he wiped away the steam from mirror. Red eyes stared back at him, the memory had his blood boiling he needed to calm down before he lost it. Taking in a deep breath he watched them fade to a hazel color.

‘Good don’t need this out.’ he thought.
