Chapter 1
Hi!
I have been writing for a few years and I am new to this app!
I would appreciate if you would also give me some feedback!
Btw (by the way) if this book goes as planned there will be 4 parts to this book!
Prelude:
As the sun is rising, I look beside me at all the men lying down, we are all squashed together like a can of sardines. The trench smells vile, like blood and gunpowder. It is all muddy and dirty covered in mould. I regret joining the war; I was so naive.
Chapter 1:
My hand is shaking as I write my name on the dotted line. Would they find out I am underage?
“Tom, are you sure we should do this?” I murmur quietly. The voice of my parents echo throughout my mind. “Will, I am positive about this. Didn’t you see the posters? This is an opportunity of a lifetime!” Tom seems so confident meanwhile I am still fearing what my parents will do to me when they find out. “It will be an adventure for us all, we don’t want to betray our country. Right?” Tom questioned. “Yes of course, you’re right.”
Tom and I begin the slow walk home. We can feel the butterflies flying irratically in our stomachs. Upon approaching my front door, I look at Tom nervously. I know my life is about to change as soon as I step inside my house. Tom gives me a nod, it’s as if he can read my mind. While slowly opening the door, I see my parents sitting on the couch with my uncle, they look like they are having a heated discussion. I wonder why my uncle is here. He lives in a different town which is really far away. He looks a little bit different since I haven’t seen him in so long. He looks really tired as if he hasn’t slept in days and he has grown a beard as well. It looks like he has a large furball hanging from his chin.
I vaguely hear the word ‘war’ while they are speaking. I hear my uncle say angrily, “I let my boys join the war, they have to fight for our country!” I hear my mother and father disagree with my uncle, they can be so protective sometimes. I continue to eavesdrop, listening to their conversation from behind the door. My mother says quietly, “Japan just bombed America. Is it still safe to live here? Should we move house? At least Will is not old enough to join the war.” I press my ear against the door but I still can’t hear her. I lean in closer, the door swings open swiftly. I land on the living room floor with my bag still on my back. Everyone stares at me, wondering if I know what they are talking about.
I am trying to act normal in the house whilst I am packing up my suitcase for the war. Tom and I have to leave tonight. How am I going to tell my parents? I drag my suitcase down the stairs, sweat covered my face and palms. I grip my suitcase tightly and then start to run to the door. I throw a note in my mother’s hands which explained to her why I was leaving. I sprint into the yard, running out of breath. I was quite a distance from the house when my mother screams “William Smith! Where do you think you are going?”I yell as loud as I could, “Don’t worry I will be fine, check the note!” I faintly saw my mother who looked like a small figure. She started to cry and scream at the birds. I felt so bad but I had to put that all behind me. I have a more important mission to complete. Just then I saw Tom sitting on the rock. He looked pretty sad but I ignored it. Tom murmured, “Why did you take so long and why do you have such a big suitcase?” My cheeks turned bright red. I mumbled, “I was scared to tell my parents about the war. Oh and also this suitcase has all my clothes in it.” Tom groaned and then said “You have to dump some of that. Remember you have to carry that suitcase for a long time.” I said angrily, “These are my best clothes!” Tom rolled his eyes, looking annoyed at me.
