The Lyrics of Two
Some I recognised as people and some as mere floaters in mid-air. People called this “view” of what we saw every day...life. I, on the other hand, didn’t really know what I saw. It could have been an advertising blimp for all I care. It sounds weird, but in my world...it’ s normal. Or at least, that’s what I though’t .
That was all Jayden thought of life. He didn’t think there was anything left for him to be excited about. It was his senior year of high school and he had nothing planned for the following year. He had no passion whatsoever. For him, life was like staring at a brick wall.
All of this was true...until Jayden met Molly.
For him, she was probably more than just his first love.
They met on their last day of school.
He was angry at one of the kids in his class. He was walking so fast, almost sprinting just to get out of that damn place. He bumped into her...so hard that she fell to the floor.
“Talk about not making a good first impression,“Molly said while getting up and dusting herself off.
“Sorry,” Jayden said flatly. He started walking away as if to show that he didn’ t have anything else to say.
“I don’t even get a name?” Molly yelled before he was gone. He turned around and looked at her as if she was crazy. She continued inquisitively,
“Well?” he started to smile at her.
“Jayden. Yours?”
“Molly. Well, Jayden, we should do this again sometime!” Molly said with a beautiful smile. He laughed at her and started walking away again.
After three weeks, Jayden had already found a job. He didn’t really need the money, but he had nothing better to do. His dad was too busy with his own job and he wasn’t really that close to him. He was waiting tables at a family diner in town. It wasn’t a very busy day, so his boss decided to give him the day off. He decided to order a milkshake before he went home. He stopped at the movie rental shop for a couple of movies. He was standing at the new releases section when he saw her again. Molly.
“Hey.” Jayden said shyly.
“Hey! I see you decided to take me up on my offer?”
“What offer?”
“To bump into each other again! Atleast you didn’t take it literally this time,” Molly said with a smile. Jayden started to smile.
“So, any suggestions?” Molly asked, pointing at the movies. Jayden just stood there for a moment.
“Depends on what kind of movies you like.”
“I love action and romantic movies.”
“Well, then Taken 2 would be great. It has action and-”
“Romance.” she continued smilingly.
“Yeah. So, what are you doing tonight?”
“Nothing much, but I have an idea!”
“Wait. Don’t you have a boyfriend?” Jayden asked cautiously.
“Jayden...don’t be so paranoid. I’m not asking you out! I just don’t have anything else to do, and besides, my boyfriend is at football practice.”
“Oh...okay. What did you have in mind?”
“Let’s watch movies at my place? Here’s my address and phone number.”
“Cool. What time?”
“How does seven o’clock sound?”
“Great. See you later!”
They said goodbye. Jayden felt embarrassed for having asked whether she had a boyfriend. It was none of his business.
At home, Jayden found himself in the bathroom, getting ready for that night with Molly. He turned his radio on and listened to his favourite song, ‘beneath your beautiful’ of Labrinth. The ultimate love song. When he was done, he got his car keys and headed for the door.
“Jayden, where are you going?” his dad yelled from the kitchen.
“I’m going to a friend’s house. You don’t have to wait up.”
Jayden and his dad weren’t very close. In fact, the last time they had a decent conversation was about five years ago.
He stopped in front of her house. When she opened the door, he looked at her with new eyes. He really saw her this time. Her eyes, a dashing blue with just a hint of hazel around the pupil. Her lips, curved into the perfect Cupid’ s bow; blonde hair...
She was, in fact, beautiful.
“Hello? Somebody home?” Molly asked with a confused expression.
“Sorry. You look great by the way.”
“Thanks! Come on in!”
Molly gestured for Jayden to enter. She had already arranged everything in the TV room. Blankets, pillows, snacks, drinks, movies and CD’s.
“What kind of music do you like?” Jayden asked.
“Rock, pop, love songs, indie rock and the list doesn’t end. And you?”
Just when he wanted to answer, his phone rang.
He had forgotten to put it on silent.
“Sorry, my phone can disturb at the most inconvenient of times-”
Molly interrupted him in mid-sentence.
“Wait!” she grabbed Jayden’s phone and pushed a few buttons.
“You have got to be kidding me? Did you choose this ringtone yourself?” Molly asked surprised.
“Yes. Why? Do you have a problem with that song?”
“..Oh my word! ‘Beneath your beautiful’ is my absolute favourite love song! It was rated the-”
Jayden cut her off. “Most epic love song since forever.”
They smiled at each other.
After a few hours, they hadn’t even started to watch the movies. They just talked, and that was enough.
“Are your parents divorced?” Molly asked.
“My mom died when I was thirteen. Now I live with my dad,”
There was silence for a while.
“That’s bad.” Molly didn’t really know what else to say.
“Yeah. What about your parents?”
“Mine are one of those couples that are just together for the sake of the kids. They’re not really happy. And Duane doesn’t really want to be with me.”
“Why do say that?”
“It’s only for his image. He’ s captain of the football team and I’m head cheerleader.”
“So this wasn’t your last year?” Jayden asked.
“No, I only get out of that place next year.”
At the end of the night they said goodbye.
“Thanks, I had a great time.” Jayden said.
“My pleasure. I also had fun.”
Tension. Jayden wanted to say something.
Two weeks passed. Scheduled full of plans with Molly. Jayden didn’t know it, but he was slowly falling for her. He, eventually, noticed his strange feelings towards her. But other than that, they also had a very strong friendship..one that could not be broken. He knew that what he felt for her would never evolve into something more than a crush, because Molly broke up with her boyfriend but she told Jayden about her new crush. She didn’t tell him who it was. Sometimes Jayden felt an intense hatred towards the new guy in her life. In his mind, he thoughht that no guy would ever be good enough for Molly. For him, she was much too special to be seen with someone ordinary.
“Jayden, hi! It’s Molly. Just wanted to let you know that Duane called and asked to have dinner with me on Saturday night. He wants to know why I broke up with him. Call me back when you get this.”
That was what Jayden heard when he got home from work. He wasn’t in time to answer the phone, so the answering machine got it.
Jayden felt an agonising pain. He couldn’ t bear the thought of her with anybody else. It was just too much.
After an hour or so, when he had cooled off, he called Molly.
“Finally!” Molly exclaimed when she picked up.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“I thought that we could go to the mall after my dinner with Duane. What do you think?”
“Yeah, that’s fine. What time?”
“I’m not going to be that long at Duane’s, so we could meet at nine?”
“Okay, cool.”
There was silence for a while.
“What’s wrong, Jayden?”
“Nothing, I’m just tired. I think I’ll take a nap now.”
“Okay, sweet dreams. Talk to you later!”
“Yeah, bye!”
When Saturday came, Jayden couldn’t believe how excited he was about seeing Molly again. At the back of his mind there was still doubt. She could go back to Duane. He knew that that would be her worst decision ever.
“Are you ready?” Jayden asked Molly when he picked her up.
“Yeah!”
“So, how was your dinner with Duane?”
“He wants me to give him another chance. I don’ t know anymore...I mean I really like this other guy.”
“I hope everything works out for you.” Jayden said expressionlessly. He still wondered who it could be. They were in the mall. It was sort of awkward at first, for some unknown reason. Jayden so badly wanted to tell her how he felt... It was like a volcano waiting to erupt.
“Molly...can I tell you something?”
“Wait-” she interrupted immediately.
“What’s wrong?” Jayden asked confused.
“Shhh!!”
Then Jayden knew what she was listening to...their song, ‘Beneath your beautiful’ by Labrinth. Jayden gestured to Molly if she would like to dance with him. They slow-danced together for a while. Jayden could hear Molly humming softly to the song. He could feel her heart racing against his chest. He lowered her towards the floor...the dip. Their eyes locked. In Jayden’s mind, everything came to a complete stop. He leaned in slowly...he could feel her heart racing faster and faster... He kissed her with the utmost care and sensitivity. He received an answer when he felt how she returned his kiss. Then he knew who it was.
The lyrics of their souls were intertwined at that exact moment.
