A sly red fox lived near the river just below Ophelia’s house. The fox had a silky, shiny red coat that glistened in the sun. The fox had dug a den on the rivers edge and lined it with leaves and branches to make it comfortable and safe. It was close to the fresh water from the river so the fox could drink whenever thirsty, but more importantly, it was where other small animals came to get a drink and where the fox could get a fresh meal when they did.
He did so much enjoy eating small field mice or small squirrels who would come to the rivers edge to get a drink . The fox would creep from his den when the rodent started to drink and in one motion, would leap and grab the unsuspecting creature with his shiny white teeth. Oh how he enjoyed devouring those small animals, they were a nice addition to insects and roots that the fox could forage. But as much as he loved to eat small rodents, he always dreamed of eating eggs! Bird eggs, duck eggs, chicken eggs.
The fox remembered that his mother had collected eggs for him and the rest of her cubs when he was very little. He never forgot how good they were and he was constantly on the search for unguarded nests so he could steal all the eggs.
