Humble beginnings
It's 2010, I had just graduated highschool and gotten an admission into one of the best schools in Dubai. But been from an African home where most times all your permitted to study is law, medicine or engineering. I was not as excited as I should be.
My mum had told me I had to study law or business, I was devasted because am more on the creative side and wished i could just study Graphic design in peace, but who am I to defy and African mother I thought to myself.
September rolled around and I found myself boarding Emirates to start a new chapter of my life. After 7 long hours we had finally landed in Dubai. As i stepped out of the plane I gave myself a well rewarded stretch before heading for immigrations.
After all the hustle and bustle of the airport was done, I hopped into a taxi going straight to the hostel of my University. On reaching I was greeted by a middle aged man, average height, short black and grey hair, was nearly dressed in a white button up shirt and a black pair of trousers.
Hello good afternoon dear, my name is Imran and am your hostel manager, he said.
I smiled looking up at him, hi am Yvonne am a new student and dont know my way around.
He looked through a long list of names and finally came across mine. Oh look here! your going to be in room 400 on the fourth floor, you have a roommate by the name Celeste. He said, lifting his head and looking at me who was a neverous wreck.
I have never really had a roommate since I was the last of two girls with us been 10years apart I always had a room to myself. I wondered how my roommate would be, would she be nice or pure evil. Imran clears his throat making me snap out of my thoughts. Quickly looking at him I said a big thank you and wemt about looking for my room. When I finally found door I opened it.
To my surprise I always expected a big room but this room was damn too small for two people. To each side of the wall stood a small bed measuring roughly 3ftx6ft, opposite each bed had a two door wardrobe. I immediately thought to myself how the hell am I going to fit my 3boxes of clothes into this cubicle.
I throw my things on the floor and jump into the bed getting into my thoughts as ia m fond on doing. What the fuck I am going to studying business, I mean I hate reading boring books. I hate the whole business admin thing. Quickly my anger turns into sadness as I dread have to study what I hate. As i feel the tears prickling down the side of my cheeks I wipe them away.
Hey rommie!!! A girl shouted making my jump out of my skin and thoughts.
OMG! You scared me Half to death, am Yvonne, i said looking at her and smiling. She opened her hand wide for a hug. I moved forward to embrace her and she said am Celeste it's nice meeting you. I laughed and told her well yor really sweet. I wss scared you were going to be an awful person or a snob. We both chuckled. Celeste had a tall frame, light brown eyes, curly hair had a lil booty that fit her just right, complimenting her boobs.
We both unpacked and talked like we have known each other for years.
After getting a decent amount of unpacking done, I sat just before my stomach growled breaking the short silence in the room.
Yvonne you must be starving from the sounds that just left you tummy, said Celeste. Why don't we go grocery shopping, there's a supermarket around the corner. I smiled jumping off the bed and digging into my bag for my wallet.
At yhe check out counter I took out my phone to look at the time, oh my Celeste it's 7pm we spent 30 minutes shopping for groceries. I was so hungry i started eating a bag of chips before even paying for it.
We strolled back I the hostel and straight to the kitchen cooked a meal and talked about girly stuff before going back to our bedroom and bidding ourself goodnight.
