The Station

“Don’t go,” Colin whispered.

Declan closed his eyes and tried to steel himself against that beautiful voice. He didn’t want to turn around, but he couldn’t help himself. He had to look once more into those warm brown eyes. The cacophony of the busy train station faded away as Declan lost himself in the depths of those liquid pools. What he saw there nearly brought him to his knees. “Colin, I can’t…I don’t know how…”

Colin stepped in close to him. “Shhh love. I know you’re afraid.”

Declan huffed out angry breath. “I’m terrified. I’m twenty-eight years old and I’d never even kissed a man until I met you. I’ve been hiding all my life.” His eyes filled with tears. “My family—I don’t know what they’d do. My brother’s a priest, for Christ sake!”

The light in Colin’s eyes dimmed and he stepped back. “I’ll not hold you up any longer, then.” He ducked his head and looked away. “Be well, love.”

“All aboard! Last call!”

Declan walked toward the open doors of the train and then stopped. The conductor said impatiently, “Well are you gettin’ on or not?”

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “Not.”
