Who the fuck is Mac Miller?
Born Malcom McCormick, Mac Miller is the unexpected Jewish heavy-weight from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Life was a rollercoaster that tragically ended premature for the 26 year old MC. From having his own MTV show at the age of 20 to dating pop super star Ariana Grande, Mac Miller endured his fair share of ups and downs throughout his career.
Mac Miller attended Taylor Allderdice high school, also where his peer and ex label signee Wiz Khalifa was enrolled. Both artists signed to Rostrum Records, where they would respectively take their separate routes throughout the hip hop world. Miller began releasing projects at the ripe age of 15, eventually teaming up with Rex Arrow Films to release music visuals accompanying his music. With the help of ID Labs, Mac Miller began to catch buzz with his mixtape "K.I.D.S." inspired by the 1990's film "Kids". The release of the music video for "Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza" took the internet by storm. In a time where hip hop and social media began to collide, Mac seemingly snuck his way into blogs and playlists all over the world.
Shortly after a couple of decently sized tours, Mac Miller decided to release his mixtape "Best Day Ever", which once again showed promised for the up and coming rapper with hits such as "Donald Trump" and the mixtape titled single "Best Day Ever". The release of this project proved to the industry that Mac Miller was next up, which was acknowledged by XXL Magazine in 2011 by adding Miller to a star-studded freshman class with the likes of YG, Kendrick Lamar, and Lil' B. Soon after, Mac released his debut album, "Blue Slide Park", which had disheartening reviews from critics claiming that Miller might never evolve from his previous projects filled with "frat rap" and one liners. These critics were eventually silenced with Mac Miller's ensuing projects, "Macadelic" and "Watching Movies with the Sound Off". Subsequently, Mac found himself dabbling with a variety of drugs in the perilous Hollywood Hills during the making of these projects. As a result of Mac's drug influence, he released his well known mixtape "Faces", which had mixed reviews.
In 2015, Mac Miller released his "coming to light" album, "Good AM", which informed the world that he was back on the right path, happy and somewhat sober. Succeeding the release of "Good AM", Mac followed up with his album, "The Divine Feminine", which was perceived as a love letter towards his then love interest Ariana Grande. Both Mac and Ariana, admitted that the album was about love and not directly intended towards anyone in specific. "The Divine Feminine" is a beautiful piece of work infused with jazz and soul, featuring artists such as Anderson .Paak, Ty Dolla Sign, and SZA.
After the break up with Ariana Grande, Mac began working on his final studio album "Swimming". 2018 was a rocky year for the artist, he ended up in jail after a DUI crash and was once again battling with the demons of drugs. "Swimming" was released in August of 2018, which was revered as one of the year's best albums, being nominated for a Grammy award for "Album of the Year". On September 7th of 2018, Mac Miller was found unresponsive in his Studio City home by a close friend. Mac passed away from an overdose of Fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol. Mac Miller's legacy will forever live on. On October 31st, 2018 Mac's friends and family hosted a "Remembrance of Life" concert which included performances from Vince Staples, John Mayer, Action Bronson, Anderson .Paak, and many more. A few posthumous singles have been released since his passing. There are also rumors that Mac had made approximately 11 unreleased albums.
