It's hard being left behind. It's painful being left alone.

The pain trespassed on her heart. It squeezed everything within her. It withdrew her inner serenity and replaced it with the darkness that overshadowed her happiness. That pain was eating her alive, swallowing every ounce of hope she had yet to spare.

Maya was sitting alone in a room, thinking about the weights that life roped to her spine. The night that made her world topsy. The day that shaped her serendipity to miserable memories. The melancholic air that whispered a nameless fear around her.

The fear of only one name, Mick.

Alpha Mick who became Alpha a few months ago. Her so-called uncle, the only one she hated around her. The one she feared.

Maya's father, Alpha Logan Jackson died in a car crash one year ago, the incident which shaped her life to menace agony.

Her mother, Emily Jackson was forced to marry Mick to run her pack. Being Luna, the only way she was able to protect the pack, was to marry Mick, the beta of the Silver Stone pack.

Maya felt protected due to her mother being her shield. But fate had decided something else.

Luna married Mick a few months ago which made him the Alpha of the Silver Stone pack. Being alpha was everything he ever wanted.

Karma played it's dreary role and took away the only shield Maya once had.

On a pretty odious midnight, Luna was taken to the pack doctor. She was so weak that the doctor could not do anything and told Maya that her mother had blood clots in her brain and did not have enough time.

Flashback

"Maya my dear don't cry! It is time for me to say goodbye to this world dear." Emily weakly whispered while caressing Maya's hair, who hugged her mother tight and was crying.

"Why do you have to go, mother? Please, stay. I can't live without you." Maya was sobbing in her mother's arms. "Please, don't go. Just stay by my side. Be with me. Father left us all of a sudden and now you? Please don't...." She trailed off.

"Sh... Who said I am leaving you? I am not. I am here, right there in your heart. Listen, my dear. This is the harsh reality of the world. Everyone has to leave this world one day, whatsoever. True, we are immortals but one day the sun sets upon us too. We die and it is my time to go."

"But I can't live without you. I will be alone." Maya cried.

"You won't be alone. There is no place where you would be and I won't be there with you... I will be with you, always, even if you can't see me."

Emily inhaled weakly and said,

"Let your heart guide you. Listen to its beat. It whispers. You have to select every path you decide to walk on, which your life puts on your way.

Remember, every fork leads to a different destiny and when you think that you can't decide, close your eyes and let your heart guide you." Emily coughed.

"I am very lucky to have a daughter like you. My sunshine, promise me that you will take care of yourself. Promise me, you will stay strong and won't cry a lot, which will only hurt me and your father.

Promise me that you will be the one I wanted you to be. Stay away from your uncle Mick for he is not a good person. Don't be with him alone, ever!

You can trust your uncle Josh as he is your father's only biological brother. You haven't met him because he runs a pack far away from here. To the south path. Runaway if you can. Find him. I know he loves you. Find him, Greyson will help you there."

"Mother please don't leave me here. Please, mother stay." Was all Maya could say.

"My dear, I have to go now as it is my time. It's time to meet your father. Listen, my dear. The universe is a very confusing place to live. People and creatures like us are all different in nature. Don't trust anyone so fast that it will only hurt you. Try to understand them before depending on them.

If you ever think that you are done with your life then live for others, their smiles will give you strength. Be that light that may be helpful for people in the dark.

Remember one thing, when life goes hard on you, perceive, life is trying to teach you a lesson." She coughed.

"Don't let anyone take advantage of you." It was hard for Emily to speak and she coughed again.

"My flower! My child, you are young and naive don't let anyone play with your emotions." She coughed again. She was taking heavy breaths. "My child! Remember that I love you with all my heart. Your-your father loves you." She coughed one last time. Her hand on Maya's head, fell and she closed her eyes.

"Mother?" Maya asked hoping Emily was listening. She shook her hand again and again. "Mother? No, no! Mother? Don't go! I will be all alone mother. Please. Please! Open your eyes. Look at me!"

"Maya, she is no more." The pack doctor said looking down on his feet.

"No! How dare you say that! She's only kidding. She will wake up anytime and hug me!" Maya cried.

"She is resting dear. Please let her sleep in peace." Greyson hugged Maya.

"No! You are all out of your minds! Mother?!"

Maya closed her eyes as she remembered how she screamed that night and came back to reality. She was sitting by the fire and the memories of the darkest night, resonated in her mind. Her walls, the walls that held her up, made her strong just... collapsed. Moment by moment, they fell. Salty drops fell from her chin, dripping down her temples. She felt the muscles of her chin trembled, like a small child crying in the dark.

Suddenly, there appeared a tall and sturdy figure.

"Maya, Alpha Mick is asking for you. He is not in a good mood. Jane told me he has gone to take a shower. Meanwhile, I am here to tell you that tonight is your chance to run away. He is not a good person. I have made a plan. I will be there with you. Just go and see what he has to say. I will be around.

If that black hat tries to touch you. Call out my name and I'll be there. Today is your only chance. His guards are not here in our territory." said Greyson.

"And what if he tries to kill you? After he will figure out that you are the one who helped me?" Maya asked in her fearful voice.

"Don't worry about me. Luna gave your responsibility to me. I won't bear him touching you. Now go to his room and pretend that you are sick and need to take rest. If anything happens, remember I will be out there." Greyson said.

"But..." She trailed off.

"Greyson's right Maya. Don't be a fool. It is your only chance! Run as fast as you can. We will take care of that beast." Said Jane.

"He will kill you all!" Maya became angry.

"I don't care. I promised Luna that I will take care of you till my last breath!" Greyson growled and there was silence in the room. Just like the sky which becomes clear after a thunderstorm.

"You are like my little daughter so please run, run away from this hell and don't look back. Find your uncle Josh. He is our only hope. We will take care of the rest. End of discussion!" Greyson said in anger.

"How can I become so selfish?" Maya growled.

"You're our responsibility and don't forget it is your mother's last wish!" Jane yelled.

Dead silence took over the eerie atmosphere. Only the sound that could be heard was of rain hammering the glass windows. Tears made their way down Maya's cheek. She just broke down. The sobs punched through, ripping through her muscles, bones, and guts.

Greyson came forward and hugged Maya. She found comfort in his embrace. Her sobs muffled. "Please don't argue, Maya. It is for you and Luna. Just remember that we all love you and we can't let that black hat touch you. Now go and pretend you're feeling dizzy. He won't let you stay there longer."

"How can I not be so thankful to you? You are sacrificing your lives for me." Maya hugged Greyson and Jane joined them.

"I will do anything for you. I have to keep the vow that I made to Luna. Now go and remember I will be there outside the room." Said Greyson and wiped her tears with his hands.

Maya stood up. Took deep breaths and walked towards Mick's room. When she reached the door, she thought twice before knocking. Whether she should go or not and then Greyson came.

"I am standing right here." He said and gave Maya hope. She took deep breaths again as if it was her last time to take in oxygen and knocked on the door.

*Thud... thud... thud...*

That thudding sound felt like something hammered Maya's heart.

"Come in!" He yelled and Maya shut her eyes on his terrifying voice. She gathered courage, opened the door and entered the room. She saw Mick half-naked. A towel was wrapped around his waist as he came out of his bathroom.

"Ah, Maya!" She hated him for calling out the name that her father gave her. "I can't believe my eyes that you are here. I waited three long days just to see you." Saying that he came took long strides towards Maya. "I did not see you since my Emily died."

"Luna! Call her Luna. Don't say her name from your sinful mouth!" Maya said in her thundering tone.

"Ah, I like your beautiful tone! My favorite. Just like your beautiful mother." On hearing about her mother, Maya closed her eyes and held her breath. "You look exactly like her. Same temper. Same beauty. You are just like her." Saying that Mick was at an arm's length away from Maya. "Why don't you come here and hug your uncle. I think you will be all comfortable here in my arms. Just as you used to in your father's arms."

"Shut it!" Maya yelled like a thunder, "and stay away from me. Keep your dirty hands off of me."

Mick took Maya's arm and gave it jerks. Maya closed her eyes tight feeling pain.

"Don't show your anger to me you fool! I am the Alpha of this pack. You must obey my orders or I will rip off your clothes myself and teach you a lesson for defying me!"

Before he could make any movement, Maya kicked him where the sun doesn't shine.

Mick released her and fell on the ground. He was curling on the ground and screaming in agony.

"You bitch! What have you done! I swear I will rip your head off your f**king body!" Mick yelled.

Before anything else could happen, Greyson broke into the room, took Maya's hand and ran.

As soon as they reached the exit gate, Greyson cupped Maya's face in his hands and said, "Runaway Maya! Now. Don't look back ever. Don't stop for this is the matter of life and death." He kissed Maya's head.

"Remember we all love you! We sacrificed our lives for you. Don't you ever let yourself in any trouble again." He kissed her head again. "Go now! Go. Jane and others won't be able to hold him back for long. They need me inside. I love you cupcake. Now run!"

With those last words, Greyson took off Maya's bag that was hanging on his shoulder. The cracking sound was heard and Maya's clothes ripped apart. She shifted in her wolf. A black and white fur wolf, about 5ft high, stood in front of Greyson. He tided her bag on her back and Maya ran away into the dark forest.

The turbulent deluge came down from the sky like an inexorable, wrathful volcano, ready for the destruction of villages and fields. Nothing was possible to see. The choleric sound of thunder was louder than round shot cannonballs that burst out of cannon in a war. The air grew heavy and the humidity pressed down, suffocating and stealing the peace of pleasant sky. The scent of rain was dark and catastrophic. A stillness fell over the forest that even the animals were afraid to whisper. Even the wind was petrified and held its breath. A streak of hot silver split the sky like a warning.

While she was running, tears escaped her eyes and she could see images of Greyson's and Jane's face in her mind. She focused on them so much that she hit a tree and her paw was injured. She fell and tears rolled down her face. Trembling, she stood up and Greyson's voice resonated in her mind

"Run and never look back!"

"Don't stop as this is the matter of life and death."

She stood up again and started running through the forest in grim and dreadful weather.

"You have to do this! You can do this. Greyson and Jane are sacrificing their lives for you. Run as this is your last run. As you won't see tomorrow!" Maya said these words to her wolf and started running fast.

Only The Moon Goddess knows how Maya ran that night through the dark forest. In a thunderstorm. In a darkest and cold night. She didn't know how far she had come but it was pretty clear that she was in the south left part of the forest. So far away from the place she once called home.

She knew one thing and that was to run, run and run. After running and covering a major distance, she fainted and fell in the middle of the forest. She had no more energy to move even a few steps forward. All she saw, were trees surrounding her. Lying there in a rainstorm and cold weather, she felt pain. Her breathing was heavy. Her mother's voice started to resonate in her mind.

"My sunshine!" The voice echoed in the forest.

Suddenly everything went blurry.

"Mother help. I need you." She sighed and her eyes were closed.
