Just The Beginning

Kaylee

Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that my life would turn out the way it has. When my parents told me that we would be moving from the bright lights of New York to the deep Mississippi I was completely shocked and upset. I couldn’t understand why exactly, but their reason was that a good job opportunity came up for dad and that’s why. I had a feeling that there was a deeper reason why, but I know that I wouldn’t get anything else out of them. I don’t understand why I must give up my life here at home to move. It’s not like I can do anything about it. If it was up to me, I would stay here, but I can’t because I’m only 16. Two more years and I can’t leave and go and do whatever I want.

It was a couple days before the big move and I’ve barely packed anything. I just couldn’t believe that this was happening to me. I texted my two girlfriends the news and now we were sitting on my bed. Stephanie turned to me and said “Girl this is completely nonsense. I don’t understand, maybe if I talk to my mom, she will let you stay with us to finish up school”. I totally wish that would happen but knowing my parents that would never happen, but I couldn’t tell her that. “All mom said to me was that it’s a great opportunity and that it’s a major promotion for dad”. “Don’t get me wrong I think that is great for dad. He works so hard and he totally deserves it”. Tiffany was staying quiet and knowing her, her mind was spinning trying to come up with some crazy idea. “This totally sucks girl, but maybe you and your family will get closer with this move” Tiffany said.

That wasn’t something I thought would come out of her mouth, but maybe she was right. Things just have been going so well for me here and I didn’t want to have to start over. My friends stayed for dinner and helped me pack some of my room up before they had to leave. I told them that I will text them before I leave so they can come over and we can all say bye. I only have one more day before we leave so I know that I got to get my belongings boxed up and mom told me to get rid of what I don’t want to take with me. I hope that my life will be just at great there as it is here. When I woke up the next day everything felt surreal. I woke up the next morning to mom waking me up. “Honey, Breakfast is ready.” I trudged downstairs with a feeling of sadness. Mom and Dad were waiting for me at the table already seated. As I walked in Dad got up and gave me a big hug, the ones he always gave me when I was upset. When we both sat down Dad grabbed my hand and spoke up “Sweetie I know you’re upset about this whole thing, but just think this could be really great for us as a family.” “I know dad, but why does it have to be a whole other state. Why can’t it be somewhere here instead. That way I can be here near my friends and I’m doing so good in school, I really don’t want to have to change schools and meet new people” I said. That’s when Mom said “Baby girl why don’t you just give this a chance. I know you will do just as good in school there as you are here, and you will make friends easily. You are such an amazing girl, and anyone would be lucky to have you as a friend.” We stopped talking about the whole moving thing as we dug into our food.

As we were loading our stuff in the U-Haul, my most amazing friends came by to say good-bye and as they were leaving, they made me promise to call and text them pretty much every day. Well saying good-bye to the place that was my home for forever was deeply sad and I couldn’t stop the tears that were falling down my face. After Dad locked the house up, making sure that we didn’t leave anything behind, we hit the road. It was going to be a long trip so, I tried to get as much sleep as I could get. It was going to take 17 hours and I didn’t understand why we couldn’t just fly, but mom wanted to see the sights and make memories, as she put it. Throughout the trip mom and dad would switch places so the other one could get some sleep. I was woken up by dad shaking me awake letting me know that we were finally here. When I stepped out of the car I noticed, I must admit, a beautiful two-story house with a wrap around porch with a porch swing and everything. Another thing that caught my eye was lots and lots of trees. The house was surrounded by a forest and closing my eyes I was entranced by the quietness in this place. Mom and Dad were busy unloading the car and I decided to get a take on the house. One thing I knew was that the moment I stepped into the house that this was just the beginning of what was to come.
