Prologue

"GET BACK YOU LITTLE SHIT!”

My breath was getting heavier with each sprint. Fear courses through every vein in my small body. My short red hair was still visible in the darkness. Trees copied themselves around me as I tried to get away. Why were they chasing me!? I haven’t done anything wrong!

“WHERE THE FUCK IS THAT DAMN ANIMAL!?”

Their voices were becoming louder and louder towards my way. All I wanted to do was get back home. My paws were incredibly sore from all the running. I didn’t care anymore, I just need to survive!

Rushing footsteps followed behind me trying so hard to catch me. What was I to them? Was I a prize or another trophy for their wall? Did they need my claws? My teeth? My fur for another scarf or coat? I’ve seen their walls through the windows, all the wildlife that had to suffer.

I shouldn’t watched where I was going! A sharp metal claw chomped onto my leg and pull me down to the fallen leaves and sticks. I was stuck! I looked down to see metal teeth dug into my leg. Blood streamed down, coating my red fur making it darker. Yelps of pain echoed throughout the forest.

“OVER THERE! THE BEAR TRAP CAUGHT IT!”

I tried pull myself out but the teeth would deepen themselves. More yelps escaped no matter how hard I tried. Rushed footsteps banged on the leaves as men surrounded me. They circled as they lined up their guns to me. Not one man had proper identity to them. All they showed were maniacal smirks.

Two men pulled me out of their trap only to hold me up by the throat. I couldn’t breathe! My body jittered to help me escape their grasps but it was useless. One of the men pressed the end of their gun right between my eyes. I couldn’t do anything but whimper.

“Night vixen.”

He released pulled the trigger. BANG!

“NO!” My body rose in a sweat. Heavy pants left my mouth as I tried to recognise my surroundings.

I was in my room, during the middle of the night, in my bed. I’m fine, I know I’m fine! Everything was still were I left it.

“Carter,” someone barged into my room in a panic. It was just Ayla thank god. Her hair was messy and unkempt, she just woke up like me, “Everything okay?”

“Yeah,” I gulped, running a hand through my long brown hair. My chest heaved from the mental stress I just experienced, “I’m fine.”

“You sure? You’re sweating at 3 in the morning?” Ayla took a seat next to me. Ayla scanned my facial expression for any sort of answer. “It was that dream again, wasn’t it?”

All I could do was nod. It was the only strength I had left. Ayla pulled me into a hug as he patted my head softly. She tried to comfort me to calm me down from the mental stress I’ve just experienced.

Heika van Walderveen: I had to get used to the style. It’s a lot of switching and getting back into the story of the characters. Also the different timelines were a bit confusing in the beginning. But once you’re used to it, it’s really quite original. The plot is good, but it’s only book 1 (out of 3), but so far so good...
