Prologue
Every once in a while something both beautiful and disturbing is born to an unsuspecting couple. A child with hair and eyes black as tar, and with skin as pale as death. A child who seems completely devoid of all human emotion. Their tongue speaks words that taint the soul and twist the mind. Their touch a toxin that poisons the body. This child’s mere existence causes nothing but pain and suffering.
Every once in awhile a poor, unsuspecting couple brings a Reaper into the world.
As a rule, these children are collected during infancy by a group known as The Ferrymen. They leave a lifeless husk in the child’s place and the baby is then taken to be raised by Reapers.
There are times when this is not possible. There are times when the child’s birth is not noticed until it’s too late. There are times when the child is not left alone to allow for the switch. There are other times, sadder times when the child is taken by a Reaper and there is no need to leave a replacement.
In the past thirty years, another group has taken an interest in these young Reapers. A group of rogue Reapers who see no need to benefit the mortal world. A group who finds pleasure in watching humans suffer and die. They call themselves The Memitim. They have no respect for the balance of life and death, and wish to see the world of humans crumble.
