Chapter 1

Adira sighed as she brushed her long copper hair.

'Today is going to be the same as always,' She thought.

Her days always seemed to pass slowly.

She set her brush down, and grabbed her book bag, pulling it onto her shoulders. Her emerald eyes glanced into the mirror, finding her reflection staring back at her.

She stood for a moment, looking at her appearance.

She had pale skin that shone in the sun, green eyes that were usually bloodshot, and long red hair that was always appearing in her face.

Today she had chosen to wear another hoodie, black leggings, and some converse.

A simple outfit. Not one that would make her stand out.

She stared for one moment, seeing herself wearing something different for a change, a skirt, a nice blouse...

A yell from her mother saying, "Adira! You're going to be late to school if you don't hurry!" Brought her back to reality.

She scoffed at herself before grabbing her phone, rushing downstairs, closing the door behind her, and started to eat.

'I'd probably get made fun of...' She thought, still thinking of the skirt and blouse.

She looked down at her legs, which were covered by her leggings.

Her calf seemed to get fatter everyday, and it seemed like a forest of hair that regrew everyday, despite what her mom said.

She looked away, feeling disgusted.

"Adira! Hi! How are you?" Her friend Garrick yelled, popping out of a crowd of moving students.

"Good!" She replied, a little embarrassed by the scene he made.

Garrick was a very extroverted person, who thrived on his skill of being as loud as possible. He was kind and funny, but, he could be extremely annoying at times.

Adira honestly couldn't believe they were friends. Sure she used to be very sociable, but, that died out a few years ago.

She could be pessimistic at times, or quiet to the point where you thought she was mute.

But yet, they were best friends.

The pair walked into their last class of the day. Math.

They hated it. They absolutely hated math. A pure loathing.

For starters, the subject was complete trash in their opinion, and the teacher sucked. She hated her job and took it out on her students.

They sat down at two desks next to each other.

The teacher, Mrs. Bhe, started her lesson off by scolding some students.

"She seems extra grumpy today," Garrick muttered to me. I answered saying, "And I wonder why that is.."

The class dragged on for what seemed like infinity until, the sweet, beautiful, sound of the bell rang through out the school.

The classroom full of juniors practically yelled with joy.

As the herd of students were led outside to freedom, happiness raidated from them.

The math class split into different groups, heading home, going to meet with friends, to talk to others.

Nevertheless, Adira and Garrick stood together, gave quick goodbyes, and walked to their cars.

When Adira reached her beat up, 1990 Honda accord, she quickly unlocked it, and got inside, shielding her face from and passerbyers.

She pulled out of her parking spot, and rushed away from her school, afraid to be recognized.

Instead of going home, a place where she'd be tempted to crawl into bed and fall asleep instead of doing homework, Adira drove to a Mcdonalds and bought a large Doctor Pepper and fries.

After getting food, she drove to a deserted playground.

She parked her car and grabbed her food.

She played around for a bit, but then climed some stairs to reach the top of the slide platform. She sat, placed her food down, and started to do her homework, the cool fall breeze keeping her awake.

As she finshed up her homework she heard a voice from below call to her, saying, "I thought I was the only one who ever came here!"

Adira stood, and leaned over the railing to see a dark haired boy looking back at her.

"Kids these days! They think they're to cool for playgrounds now, huh?" He said, giving me a grin. "The name's Gale."

"Adira." She replied, smiling at his joke. "And yeah, I come here to do homework sometimes."

"Well today's your lucky day Adira, because I finshed my homework already, which means, that we can talk more."
