Summer Breeze

A soft breeze blew across the girl's face as her head faced downwards.

She stood at the edge all alone by herself, just as she had always been.

She breathed in the warm summer breeze, her mind completely blank. She was too broken to feel anymore, yet the summer breeze welled emotions.

How she wished for a fairytale ending, a handsome young man she had never seen, calling out to her and beckoning her to stop. But alas, this was reality.

Tears rolled down her cheeks as the church bells rang, they thundered as if mocking the girl that she truly is all alone now.

Her face expressionless, she shut her eyes. But all she could see was a white expanse.

'Is this what the afterlife is like?', she wondered.

There was a tiny doll near her feet in that white room. She picked it up, and the scenery changed to a time long forgotten.

A young girl of six, her eyes filled with sorrow, kept tugging at her mother's dress.

"Mommy, mommy, I can't find my doll!", she cried.

Her mother petted her on the head and said with a faint smile, "Then let's go find it".

She opened her eyes, her face filled with tears. The darkness of that summer evening felt disorienting. The water beneath her feet echoed the darkness of the skies. It was calling out to her, but she could not respond.

She looked to the horizon as the sun began to set. There was no noise or chatter. All around her was the warm embrace of the twilight.

As she watched the sun set, she wanted to laugh. It was the first time she had seen something so beautiful, and she couldn't stop thinking about how ironic it was.

She held on tight onto the railings, they were oddly cold to touch. She didn't want to hold them any longer, but they were her only support; everyone else had left.

Happiness, grief, hope, love; none of it seemed to matter anymore as she stared down into the deep. How meaningless it all was, she wondered, if we all just end up with the same fate.

In her mind, she was right;

Letting go of the railings, she was right;

Gazing at the horizon, she was right;

Holding the doll in her arms, she was right;

Closing her eyes, she was right;

In the end, she was right.
