Chapter 1
It was a normal Saturday morning, the sun was shining, the birds were chirping, grey clouds filled the sky, it was like any other day. Mackenzie!! Sweetheart, it’s time to wake up!! It’s 12:00 o’clock, time to get the afternoon started!! Real funny mom, I say as I grooglie climb out of my loft bed. I shuffle to the kitchen to see everyone all ready for the day. I made pancakes, my mom said as she laid a plate full of pancakes in front of me. Thank you mom, I say with a smile as I grab my fork and start cutting the buttery stack. What time did you go to bed my mom says with a look on her face. Same time you did I reply, which was 12:00 in the morning. Why’d you sleep so late then, my mom asks with a worried glance on her face. Because I love to sleep, I simply reply. I finish my pancake then get ready to walk out the door. The sun is fully out and the grey clouds began to fade away, it’s a bit chilly though, I stare at my hand which are now as purple as can be and is as cold as ice. I quickly hide them in my pockets before they can get any more purple. I suffer from a strange disease called retinoids, it’s when your hands get cold really quickly and start cramping up with excruciating pain. I was diagnosed with it before Freshman year, it was awful because I had to start wearing black dress gloves, so I was later known as glove girl. As I start walking to the store a blast of icy wind hits my body hard, I quickly clamp my arms around my shoulders to warm up a bit, it does not help. I finally arrive to the store, I feel the heat of the stores furnace around me. It felt like heaven to my hands. I walk around the store a bit, there’s really nothing I need here, I just like to browse around a bit. As I’m roaming around I see a sign labeled sweets section with I giant powdered donut next to it. Hm, I haven’t really made kolaczki in a while. I turn around and start looking for the ingredients. Alright so I have every ingredient besides jam, which of course is the biggest ingredient to the whole dessert. As I’m looking around a faint light catches my eye. It’s the jam!! I guickly run over to it only to realize it’s on the top shelf. Ugh, short people problems I mutter to myself. Out of all shelves why’d you have to put it all the way on the top?? I stand on my tippy toes trying to stretch as much as I could to grab it. It’s so close yet so far, I whisper to myself. Just a lil more and I could reach it, I flip my hair as if I’m being challenged. As I’m reaching for the jam I hear foot steps behind me, but I ignore them and continue reaching for the delicious treat until a arm runs past mine and grabs the jam. I guickly look to see who w it is, it’s a boy, looks about my age, maybe a little older, brown hair, brown eyes, a bit tall, I’ve never seen him around before, his face looks, rough yet sweet, his arms are muscular but not too muscular. Oh thank you so much I w-, the stranger walks away with the jam. Uhm hey excuse me I’m so sorry to intervene but that’s the last jam and I saw it first... The tall stranger turns around and smirks which makes my heart stop but I make sure I stand my ground. The tall stranger looks at the jam and then me. This?? He says in a Russian accent. I look at him a little surprised but quickly snap out of it. Yes!! He holds the jam in front of me, here you go, take it!! Thank you so much I really appreciate it I say as I’m reaching to grab it. His hand moves up a bit. I step a little closer to reach for it his arm raises a little higher. I huff, are you going to let me have it or not?? Of course you can, I told you to take it. He lowers the jam low enough for me to grab it. Thank you I say as I reach for it. His hand quickly jerks up. I look up at him and frown in annoyance. What?? He said, I said you can take it, not that it’ll be easy!! I roll my eyes in annoyance. I step a little closer, sure I was going to get the jam this time. He jerks his hand up, and smiles. I grab his shirt and start standing on my tippy toes. He looks surprised but continues to raise the jam a little higher. Look I have $5.00, if I give you that then can you please give me the jam?? He scoffs, I don’t want your American money!! Then what do you want?? He jthinks for a second, I want to see you puney American struggle a bit, he smirks. He thinks for a second, I think that’s what I’m going to call you, Puney. I have a name you know I say as I cross my arms. Don’t care he says, that is what I will call you for now on. He puts the jam on the top shelf, a little bit harder to reach. Noooo, I say as I try to reach for it. He smirks and starts to walk away, I grab a bag of cookies and throw it at his back, it hits him. He turns around and smiles, see you around Puney, he says as he leaves the store. I check my phone to see what time it was, great, a 5 minute trip became a 28 minute trip. I look at the jar in defeat, I certainly can’t climb it because it’s full of glass. I walk to the cold section to grab some cream cheese, guess this will have to do for now I say as I scratch my head.
