Chapter One: Unexpected Attack
The wind howled through the broken window, the screams ringing through my ears. The flashes of fur rushing past me, the scent of blood and death filling the air. This was not how I expected my night to go. Quickly pulling my sword out of its hilt I scanned my surroundings. All around me, children losing parents. Brothers losing sisters and I was in the centre of it.
The fighting felt like it went on for hours when only it was minutes. After silence fell on the town and the only sound was my laboured breathes. I dropped my sword and held onto my side that was bleeding thanks to a rogue who caught me by surprise. I could see my breath in the crisp night air with every step I took trudging through the thick mud. I slowly moved through the bodies trying to imagine how many more I could have saved if I didn’t go to sleep If I’d taken watch instead of Arrow
Arrow was one of the newer wolves that joined us. The Moon Stone Pack. It was customary for anyone who completed the first stages of training to prove themselves and take watch at the town gates and dispatch of any trouble if it came our way.
No one could have prepared for what happened tonight. Sure, we have had rogue problems for the past couple of months but nothing on this scale. The rain started pouring then going from light showers to pouring in a matter of seconds.
My thoughts quickly turned to my younger sister who was only 9 years old I reached out into the bond and tugged on it with the strength I had left. “Jessica! Where are you?” A faint tug pulled back and I let her in. “At the town square...” That’s all i needed to hear clawing my way up the muddy hill I ran to the main section of the town. Skidding a stop and scanning my surroundings I finally spotted her, three claw marks were across her chest and stomach, running over I took off my jacket and pressed it to her wounds hoping to stop the bleeding.
Her hand was shaking and cold as she placed it softly onto my arm looking up at my with the smallest pleading look she could muster. “You need to get out... of here before... they come for you.” Pressing my coat harder trying to slow the bleeding. I felt her blood coat my hands whatever I tried wasn’t working. Even praying to the damn goddess wasn’t doing anything. Not that I believed in that anyway.
I felt the tears falling down my cheeks before I could stop them. Her frail shaking hand wiped a couple away.
Voices started slowly filling the town. Clouds started to go from a light grey to dark, the sun hiding behind the clouds. A rough sounding voice spoke. “Go around and check everywhere make sure there isn’t anyone left alive. I don’t want the boss blaming me for your fuck ups.” Thundering paws and growls filled the air.
I quickly grabbed a small knife from the ground almost dropping it because of the mud. Before I managed to stand and face them my sister’s hand grabbed my arm. The feeling of it too light for her now fragile frame. Her quiet murmurs filled the the space. “Get out.. of here. Run.” I looked from my sister towards the rogues that now stalked towards me, their hackles raised and their broken teeth snarling. By the time I looked back at my sister she was gone. Lifeless.
I felt the rage building to the surface. My vision blurring as my wolf tried to take over and rip the throats out of everyone who had been apart of murding her friends and family. The familiar feeling of bones popping and snapping into place. I tried to hold her back but she wouldn’t listen. She wanted to kill them, all of them. But the wish of her sister telling her to run cut through. I shifted quickly and bolted towards the woods leaving behind everything I knew.
I knew of one place I could go and seek sanctuary but with every step my wound was getting worse and my strength depleting after hours of running I got to a boarded up house, shifting back human I dragged my feet to the door and collapsed into the ground before the darkness consumed me whole.
