The Beginning

The moon was high in the night sky and the stars twinkling like diamonds. Looking at the reflection of the sky in the lake that I was standing by, in the middle of the woods. It was one of my many safe places.

Looking around the woods, making sure no one was near, I started striping from my pyjamas. Unbuttoning my nightshirt I sat it one a round stone about ten paces from the lake, my sleep pants soon followed. When I was just in my undergarments, I started walking from the lake. There was a slight breeze, just not enough to make me cold.

The water was as clear as a cloudless sky, easy to tell where all the stones where to step and watch the tiny fishes swim away. It was an amazing sight, watching mother nature animals swim away from something unknown to them and potentially dangerous.

Walking far enough into the water, I floated on my back, watching the night sky. The bright full moon, twinkling stars, birds or bats flying around. It was nice, peaceful, something that only came around when you knew that you were alone and didn’t have to worry about anything or anyone.

There was a noise in the woods, close by. At first, I thought it was just a squirrel, until the noise came closer, and was louder than a squirrel on a left, but a foot breaking a twig. Standing up slowly enough not to make to much noise in the water, I turned to where the noise was coming from, it was faster, but like they were still trying to be quit.

Tipping my head to the side, I tried to listen to tell where they where. When that didn’t work I sniffed, seeing if I could smell something, or someone I didn’t know. It was a strange scent, not bad, but different then what the pack scent was.

A wolf, smaller than an Alpha, but definitely a Beta walked out of the woods, and just sat at the edge of the forest. Not in the trees, but not out in the open. His dark grey fur, looking almost black in the moonlight was shiny but had leaves and sticks in it.

We stood about twenty paces away from each other, just watching. knowing that we weren’t a threat to each other, yet we also didn’t know one another enough to prove that we were sane.

Slowly I started walking to the edge of the lake, walking up the stones and to my clothes. Whoever this wolf was I didn’t want him to think he could have me. I was waiting for my mate, no matter how long it takes.

Getting dressed quickly, I walked to the wolf slowly showing that I meant no harm. When I got close enough, I let him sniff the air, and then started walking back to the packhouse.

I remember my father saying something about having some guest, just didn’t know they would be coming tonight. When I got to the packhouse I went to the very top floor, and knocked on my parent’s door, waiting for confirmation to come in.

“Come in, Callie.” I heard my mother call from the other side of the door along with some shuffling. Opening the door, I saw my dad sitting against the headboard and mom with a robe around her sitting by her beauty mirror.

“What’s going on, Cal?” Dad asked, swinging his legs to the side of the bed, hands on his knees.

“Strange wolf in the woods,” I said, gathering my hair into a bun on top of my head.

“The North-west pack must be here, I’ll go down and gather them together,” Dad said, getting up from the bed, walking over to mom, kissing her on the cheek, and then walking past me out his bedroom door.

“Was the wolf cute?” Mom asked when dad was out of earshot. I gave her a dead plan look. How am I suppose to know if a wolf is cute? Mom laughed when she saw my eye roll, stood up and walked to the closet. Probably getting dressed to go meet with the guest that dad was already talking to.

When she came out of the closet in one of dad’s shirts and her leggings, she grabbed my hand and took me downstairs with her. We could hear dad talking, and unfamiliar voices as well. One voice sounded rough and fierce. Sending a tingle of excitement down my spine.

Surprising to me, I jerked to a stop, and my mom wobbling with. She looked over her shoulder at me with a raised eyebrow, asking a question that I didn’t know how to answer. The voice of the man called to me, yet I couldn’t move my feet.

The man talked again, this time when the tingle came, mom must have seen something in my eyes, as she just smiled at me and pulled me along with her the rest of the way to where my dad and the guest were awaiting.

Stopping in the doorway I looked into the room. I first set eyes on my father, next on the man who I assumed was the visiting packs Beta, and finally on a tall, finely sculptured man. As soon as he scented me he stopped talking in that deep velvety voice of his and look straight at me. Eyes gleamed, and right away I knew who he was, what he was.

He was Alpha Carlos.

He was the Alpha of the North-west pack.

He was my mate.
