Chapter 1: The Girl In The Forest
Helena was on the cold hard ground releasing out a groan from the pounding headache. Scattered memories were appearing in her mind from the night before. She slowly rolled over onto her back, her eyes fluttering open to the wind flowing through the tall green pine trees and clouds reflecting from hues of the blue and pink morning sky.
Helena slowly pushed herself up and looked around, squinting her eyes confused. She released a sigh looking down at her clothing, her pants caked in mud and her white shirt tattered. A vivid memory emerged of the night, the girl felt her heart began to race, and her breathing became uneven.
Helena was running through the woods that filled with darkness. She glanced back a few time check to see if the creature was still chasing her. She couldn't scream for life, knowing there was no one in these woods willing to help her. Helena couldn't connect with her magic after the check-up the government did. She felt locked in her own body, unable to get out.
Helena ran as hard she could, hoping that where ever this ended she would be safe. The ground was shaking from the pounding of multiple feet. Or instead of a large animal was running after her. The thought frightened her even more, choking down a cry.
The memories then switched in blurs of different events that had happened.
Helena tripped over a small branch landing face-first on the cold, muddy ground. The moon was glowing white; there were fainted figures hidden in the shadows of the enormous trees. There were loud, skin-crawling howls in the distance. Helena tried her hardest to get up, but her arms were too weak.
She tried the cast an invisible spell, failing miserably. Helena's vision blurred as tears began running down her cheeks. The only option she had was to scream for help, and that's what she did — not caring if attracted more animals towards her, feeling helpless.
Helena started to feel worried. She couldn't remember what happened or how she got there, she glanced around to find something familiar but still didn't know where she was. So, she assumed a direction and began to walk down a small animal trail, filled with brown pine straw and a dead leaves.
There was a soft breeze, shifting her hair onto her face, she moved her hair out of her face, placing it behind her ear. Helena felt as if she had been in this situation many times before, lost in woods and finding her way back. But, she couldn't remember if she was or she wasn't.
Every time Helena got further and further into the woods near a rocky rushing river. Still with no idea about how she got farther into the dark, gloomy woods. It had been happening for about year, every other week, she would find herself in the woods alone.
It was always the same; she never remembered the full night but small bits and pieces. After a while trying to figure out why she started to end up in the woods, she slowly realized that maybe it was because of her obsession for werewolves and vampires.
When Helena had graduated from college with a masters degree as a scientist; she moved far into the woods to continue her crazy obsession. The government and other top scientists she was working for assigned her in the woods miles from civilization.
Weird animal attacks were happening to the campers, citizens of the nearest towns, and hikers far off in the woods. The people's bodies would always end up on the other side of the river, the opposite side from where their belongings and camping gear were.
When Helena first thought of moving, she wanted to make sure it was indeed known for the unknown attacking, not trusting the government. Thus the reason for her walking into the woods about a few miles from the river. During, the whole year living here she been into town a few times, she didn't plan on making friends while she stayed there.
It was only for her work, to figure out the unknown, to show everyone that the supernatural world was real. That werewolves, vampires, and many other creatures that she believed lived among humanity.
To show those may be dead, might be still alive, as someone else.
The lost souls, hurt, and looking for equality.
There was a sound of twigs breaking made Helena stop immediately, focusing on any other sounds. Helena hoped it was from what she thought, a werewolf, but there was no sign of any different life. Her heart began hammering in her chest, she felt her fingers twitching, hoping this was it. Then, a small grey rabbit ran out from bushes next to a tall pine tree.
She glared at the rabbit, angry and annoyed, of all the times she was lost in the woods, she never once encountered with animals or humans. Helena was determined to find the world. She knew they would be there.
A growl filled the forest distracted Helena as her head perked up, eyes wide and ears ready to find the animal. Helena was fixing to turn around to search for the creature, but a blonde-haired man swung a large branch at her head, knocking her unconscious.
"Ouch!" The young man said, placing he balled fist over his mouth. "Damn." He squatted to the girl's body, wiping the small droplet of blood off her temple and forehead.
"I told you to go easy on her, Hunter," a dark-haired man emerged from behind a tall tree trunk, growled out. "Alpha wanted her alive, not near death." The man was shirtless with black and blue gym shorts on, grumbling his way over to the idiot.
"Well, she's been getting closer and closer to our fucking pack, Landon," Hunter growled out, next to the girl with dark-curly-hair unconscious on the ground.
"You don't think I don't know that," Landon growling back, looking down at the girl. "Mind link, Nikki, tell her to meet us at that cabin, where this girl lives, few miles north of the river. I'll get the girl." He picked up Helena carefully slinging her over his shoulder, and they began to walk towards her cabin.
