Chapter 1
My voyage is about to come to an end. I have been transferred into smaller and smaller vehicles. I know I have overslept flight that brought me here to Britain. Next up, has been train ride and currently I am in van near Reading, approaching mine new home. It looks very fine, at first glance. Enough space for all mine favorite activities, excavating the ground and, of course digging up and searching for mine favorite and only diet- the termites. If you haven’t yet discovered, or should I better say realized, I am an aardvark, part of termites/ant-eater mammal family. The best part of mine green, wet, but wonderful home are mine two best friends. Their names are Rafa and Fedex, pretty odd for marten and opossum. Apparently, guards or hosts as we like to address them, were watching epic match just few days prior to their arrival. Everybody was still discussing about it and of two kings of court, so it was natural to named them in that fashion.
As I was immediately drawn to them, we quickly became best buddies, famous trio. For that reason I was renamed, as mine African name is lost via transport, since it is not written on mine forehead, and I can’t pronouns it. Officially I am Nole, another great sportsman. For likes of you that have excellent knowledge in animal’s behavior – the marten can’t be put in the vicinity of me or Fedex if you don’t want some hustle and bustle. However, in this paradise, when there is food in abundance, martens behave like little rabbits, cozy, tranquil and playful. There aren’t ferocious or killing-machine when there is no need for it, like humans, not all, of course. Our hosts are very affectionate, friendly and also playful from time to time.
The best time for us is, in the afternoon, after lunch, for them. I feed in the forest whilst they are running, playing and chasing each other around me. One should be fit, obesity can lead to many diseases. Healthy and joyful eloping in and around the trees is just what one planet’s inhabitant with legs needs. At the same time, I am “trying to get to China”. They just tease me, but I have to find mine supper in the ground, digging with my huge limbs: which are enormous in a proportion to the rest of mine body. I don’t eat all of them. Some of my prey, I return to mine enclosure for my lady. At least, I am hoping that she will become it one day. I‘ll just have to wait for that special month, month of love, as we animals like to call it. During that period, all quarrels and rejection are forgotten, our minds are set for only one thing. To mine disgrace, I can’t manage the calendar, so I am not sure when and if this lovely month will come this year or the next.
Her name is Shara, which is shortened for some female tennis player. Although she isn’t tall, blonde and slim, I prefer her in this way, small, with huge trunk and hands. Her best friend is Serena, an armadillo, though it is mystery for me, why they named little, fragile and speedy-moving creature in such manner. Maybe because it has armor or that they are both Americans.
If you think that there are only small, but valiant animals here, you are much mistaken. On the meadow, fine English field, fool of lovely grass, there are many big horses, bulls, camels and others. They bear equally heavy names: Mike Tyson, Holyfield, and Rambo, Rocky etc.
During the day, it isn’t safe to get near them, unintentionally those large animals could hurt us. But in the evening, when they, as we all like to, enjoy resting and their stamina is wearing down, we, the smaller once, are allowed to run free between the mighty and hairy legs and buttocks of those heavyweights. The time is to show our own agility, stamina and strength. Rafa is leading in all those categories, whilst Fedex is master for quick, gracious and speedy getaway. Only thing for me to do, the best and mine unique characteristic is digging a whole. At first, they laugh, then they are running away just to avoid mounds and mounds of ground that I throw at them. Finally, everybody is amazed with the size of it.
“We have a pool now”, Fedex is astonished.
“All we need is water”, Rafa doesn’t keep his mouth shut for long.
Mine only concern, at this point, is what Shara will say, but she only smiles with her eyes. I hope that she is satisfied with the range of mine limbs and their specialty, so she would pick me up for “the dance”.
