Chapter One
Unedited
Irritated.
That is the word, minimal as it is, she would use to describe the feeling in her chest as her father pulled away from their small one story home. Her mother's summer flowers disappearing in the distance.
Mya turned back around in her seat, the backseat of her fathers small black 2010 Honda Accord felt suffocating as the spare boxes they'd stuffed next to her pushed her against the door. She was uncomfortable and highly irritated.
She couldn't believe they had just uprooted her from her life. She'd had everything going for her, good grades, one friend and the ability to go completely undetected by her entire high school population. She was a week away from starting her senior year and instead of waiting the last year, her parents had decided now was a good time to move.
She sighed and leaned her forehead against the cool glass, "Tell me again why I have to go to boarding school? Why can't I just go to a regular, normal school? You know where people don't wear those ugly uniforms" she said scrunching her nose in distaste as she tapped her perfectly manicured finger nails on the glass.
Her father, Garret Williams let out a sound of irritation, "Seriously Mya? We've explained this to you atleast ten times already." His hands tightened on the steering wheel.
She blew a stray strand of blonde hair out of her face, "I just don't understand why your work couldn't have waited a year to transfer you to a new location"
Her mother sighed and turned slightly in the passenger seat to look at her, her blue eyes darker than her daughters "Because we wanted a new start. Not everything is about what you want Mya"
Mya glared at her mother but didn't say anything else. Her parents were not your average sweet and sensitive guardians, they were distant and absent a lot of her life. Her mother always had something negative to say to her daughter and then swiftly tried to cover it up with a sweet smile as if she had never said anything at all.
Her father usually just flat out ignored her. He was curt and often times rude. He had little to no patience when dealing with her.
Her light aquamarine eyes caught his dark brown ones in the rear view mirror and she watched as he scowled before glancing back at the road. His nearly balding head glinting in the morning sun. He looked around mid fifties but in reality he was nearing his thirty ninety birthday.
Her mother aged pretty rough as well, as she was only thirty eight but easily looked around late forties. Her blonde hair held wisps of gray and was cut in a short bob. She was thin and short, where as he father was tall with a slightly bigger build.
Mya glanced out of the window and pulled the hood of her black hoodie up over her long blonde hair. She watched as the houses became open fields and the residential road became a highway.
They traveled for nearly fourteen hours, her parents switched off driving halfway through and they had only stopped every four hours or so for bathroom breaks.
Her legs were cramped and her back and neck were aching from the position she had fallen asleep in. She attempted to stretch and threw her hand into the side of a box, her elbow jarring it slightly.
"Be careful. Don't break anything" her mother snapped with irritation.
Mya said nothing. It wasn't worth her time. She'd learned early on to pick and choose her battles.
Glancing out the window once more her eyes widened as they entered a small quaint town. The streets were all cobble, the buildings were old timey and held a cute appeal. People walked the side walks, cars drove past them as they slowly slinked through the down town. There was a large square in the middle of the town where a large three fountain water fountain sat surrounded by benches and flowers.
"Welcome to Addington" a wooden carved sign read.
"Wow" she murmured in awe. She hadn't expected the town to look so wonderful.
As they drove past the town square, her father drove further back where the trees became less and the awe feeling she'd had slowly sunk away. Several large factories lay just outside of the town, all of them belonging to the company her father worked for.
"Would you look at that" he said squinting up and leaning forward.
"Pretty amazing" her mother replied gazing at the large buildings.
The company produced office goods. Large amounts of supplies went out daily, it was a multi million dollar company and Myas father was one of the managers. He really wasn't anyone special but that certainly isn't how he felt. He often acted as if he were the CEO.
Mya kept her hood up and her eyes away from the buildings until they turned around and began heading back into town.
She became slightly confused when they didn't turn into any of the neighborhoods and instead took a turn towards the trees. They began to ascend up a large hill, the town becoming smaller.
"We don't live in town?" She asked her face scrunching in confusion.
"You don't live in town. We do" her father bit out.
She glanced towards her parents, panic welled in her chest. "I don't understand" her heart thumped heavily in her chest. Would her parents actually cast her aside? Did they dislike her that much?
She tried her hardest not to bother them. She tried not to get in their way.
"You're going to be living there. You won't live with us anymore. You'll get a room, go to school and at the end of the day you'll go back to your room." Her mother explained sounding all to pleased with the set up.
Mya had always put a strong guard around her heart, especially from her parents as what they did and said to her hurt the worst.
This time, their intentions broke through. Tears blurred her vision and her bottom lip wobbled as she began to cry quietly. She didn't dare make a sound.
The rest of the ride was quiet. They took a few curved S's before they all caught sight of the large extravagant dark grey stone building. There were other buildings behind it that were barley visible , the entire area was enclosed by a large stone fence and locked by a large black iron gate. Another large wooden sign sat just outside of the gate, "Addington Academy"
She couldn't help but wonder how her parents had paid for all of this.
Her father stopped at the gate, his brakes screeching slightly. He rolled down his window and pressed a button on the small intercom that stood in the ground. A voice came through the box, her father exchanged a few words before the gate unlatched and slowly slid open.
The same red cobble road that had been in town led the way down a path between a long line of neatly trimmed trees before pulling around a large patch of grass with a variety of colored flowers.
The large gray stone building was even more impressive up close.
Mya sat slumped in the large Victorian style high back red velvet chair, her parents on either side of her in their own chairs. She fiddled with the sleeve of her black hoodie and cast her eyes to the dark wood floor.
The headmistress sat behind her large dark wooden desk, her dark black hair pulled back into a tight bun, her lips thinner and were pulled tight as she scanned the paperwork her parents had handed her a few moments ago.
The mistresses office was large decorated with expensive dark tastes. The entire inside was designed the same way as the office, with a certain renaissance appeal.
"Well everything looks to be in order." The woman spoke as she made direct eye contact with both of her parents before turning her gaze towards Mya, "There are rules here that you must abide by young lady. Dress codes, certain manners that need to be displayed and you must keep up a near perfect grade point average at all times to continue to be eligible to attend here"
Mya's stomach churned, she held back the urge to vomit. She had a strong feeling that throwing up all over the head mistresses nice wood floor wasn't the best first impression. She gave a shy nod and kept her eyes down.
"Well then, let's get you to your room. Mr and Mrs's Williams, you're welcome to stay and walk your daughter to her room-"
Her father stood up from his seat quickly, "That's alright. We really have to be going" he said shaking the woman's hand before urging his wife out of her seat.
There was no sweet goodbyes or words of encouragement. No "I love you's". Just a quick glance in Mya's direction before they departed.
The headmistress shook her head in disapproval before indicating Mya follow her.
She grabbed her backpack and her rolling suitcase before following behind the woman. They strode through the quiet halls passing door after door before taking the large spiral staircase up two floors before heading down another long hallway.
They came to a stop at one of the many single wooden doors.
The headmistress took a small silver key from the small pocket of her perfectly ironed black dress. She turned the key in the doorknob and pushed the door open wide before letting Mya enter.
Stepping into the small single bedroom, she eyed the bare light grey walls and the white trim. The same dark wooden floors that decorated the head mistresses office, were in this room.
A small single bed with perfectly made gray sheets and a plush white comforter lay tucked securely on the mattress. Directly across from the end of the bed was a small closet and next to that sat a small dark wood desk with a leather rolling chair.
Mya was genuinely surprised that they had obviously spared no expense especially on the rooms.
"Breakfast is at 7am sharp, every morning. If you're not there on time, you will not be served. Lunch is at 11am, dinner is at 4:30pm and the same rules apply. I will have my assistant print out your weekly schedule, you'll need to arrive ten minutes before each class. My assistant will bring by your uniform. It is to be worn at all times, you'll get three of them and you're responsible for washed and keeping them ironed. There's a laundry room in the basement, it's used by everyone here so don't leave your things unattended. Each floor has their own bath area, yours is right down the hall." The headmistress explained with her hands clasped in front of her. She stared at Mya's nervous form, she didn't think this new student would cause any problems.
"Ok" she said quietly.
"Ma'am" the woman corrected her.
"Huh?" She looked at the head mistress in confusion.
She cocked an eyebrow, "When you address me or your superiors, you will address us as ma'am or sir"
Mya felt heat rise to her cheeks at the thought of calling anyone by those two names embarrassing as she'd never had to do so before "Yes sir- I mean ma'am" she swallowed thickly, she was sure now was the time she was going to throw up all over the floor.
The headmistress turned on her heel as she hide a small smile and exited the room after setting the small silver key on the nightstand.
Mya let out a groan of embarrassment as the door shut before she walked over to the bed, dropping her bag and setting the suitcase on the floor, and flopped face first onto the mattress.
Mya had gone straight to sleep yesterday and had slept all through the day and all through the night. She'd woken up at six am, the assistant had knocked on her door and had given her the three uniforms. She'd managed to find the showers and had bathed herself quickly before rushing back to her room. The thought of showering with others was foreign and she felt her privacy was being invaded.
"You look lost"
Startled, Mya turned quickly and bumped into the girl who had spoke to her. Both girls caught themselves quickly. "I'm so sorry" she apologized.
The girl smiled, her dimples deepening. Her unruly red hair in a disarray of ringlets around her head like a fiery halo, her cheeks were splattered with freckles and her earthy green eyes were bright and friendly. "Don't worry about it." She placed her hands on her hips, her blue and black plaid skirt reaching just above her knees. Her short sleeve white button up was covered with a soft cotton dark blue cardigan with the Addington crest on the right pocket. Myas outfit mirrored hers. "So... are you lost?"
Mya blinked and brought her blue eyes up to meet the girls, "Um, yeah." She glanced shyly around the large cafeteria like area. "I was just sort of confused... the place is pretty much empty... where is everyone?" She had walked into the cafeteria expecting to see the tables full and the line for food long but instead there were only three people scattered across empty tables quietly eating and an unhappy serving lady standing behind the long food table.
"Everyone should be filing in today. Classes don't start until tomorrow"
Mya looked surprised "Oh, my old school doesn't start school for like another two weeks"
The girl shrugged, "Yeah, public schools are different. Oh! I almost forgot to introduce myself, my names Lexi"
"Mya" she said taking the hand that was held to her.
Lexi smiled and steered over to the food line where they grabbed breakfast and quickly took a seat at a circular nearby table.
Lexi told her about how she'd been at the school since freshman year, now that she was a senior it was her last year. Her parents were some top of the line editors and they had pretty much done the same thing Mya's parents had done, they had dumped Lexi off at the school so they didn't have to worry about her.
More students began to filter in and Mya was surprised to find that a few of them were boys.
"Um, Lexi?"
Her new friend looked up at her and tilted her head slightly. A gesture Mya found slightly odd. "What?"
"Boys go to this school?" She asked. She had automatically assumed that because it was a boarding school, it was strictly a girls boarding school.
Lexi smirked, "Yes. They reside in the west building but our classes are mixed together."
Mya couldn't help but stare as one handsome boy entered the room after another. Her old school had, had their fair share of attractive guys but these were like young models.
"They're almost to gorgeous right?" Lexi asked taking a sip of her milk. Mya nodded, she locked eyes with a handsome short dark brown haired boy before she cast her eyes to the food in front of her. Her heart thumped steadily in her chest. Her and boys just didn't mix. She was too shy, to soft spoken, she preferred to hide away because she never had any idea as to what to say or do.
It was easier to stay hidden than it was to put herself out there.
"Yeah, just a bit"
She giggled and took a bite off of her fork, "Steer clear though, they're known for breaking hearts"
"So they're players?" Mya asked even though she had no interest in associating herself with them.
Lexi nodded, "Big time"
They finished their breakfast and parted ways. Mya kept her head down, moving around the students as the halls became filled with more bodies as people began to fill the rooms in the building. Once she made it to her room, she climbed onto the bed, leaned against the frame of one of the two medium windows that sat above her bed and stared out at the swarm of students exiting various cars.
Tomorrow would be her first day of classes.
