Arrow

Over the past few days, the man had not been feeling well. He couldn’t say where and why, but his whole body felt sluggish. It was when he was walking in a shopping street. The man suddenly looked into the window of a cleaning shop, which he happened to pass by, and was stunned to see himself reflected in the window.

There was an arrow piercing his head.

The arrow penetrated diagonally from behind the right ear toward the left temple. The tip had a sharp arrowhead that he felt pain just by looking at it. He didn’t really remember when he was shot. No matter how much he tried to pull it out, it wouldn’t budge.

The man panicked and asked for help from the people on the road. When people realized that an arrow had pierced the man’s head, they laughed at him and pointed with their fingers. Some took pictures without permission. Some threw stones. The man started crying.

The man tried to escape from the area but stumbled over the uneven road and fell down. People surrounded him and laughed all at once. A mother pulling a child’s hand said, “Don’t become an adult like that.”The man crouched on the road and kept crying.

ここ数日、男は体の不調を感じていた。どこがどうとはうまく言えなかったが全身を気だるさが覆っていた。商店街を歩いているときのことだった。男は偶然通りかかったクリーニング屋のウィンドウにふと目をやると、そこに映り込んだ己の姿を見て愕然とした。

頭に矢が刺さっていたのだ。

矢は右耳の後ろから左のこめかみ辺りに向かって斜めに貫通していた。先端には見るだけで痛みを感じるほどの鋭い矢尻がついていた。いつの間に刺さったのか、まったく身に覚えがなかった。いくら引き抜こうとしてもびくともしなかった。

男はうろたえて道行く人に助けを求めた。人々は男の頭に矢が刺さっていることに気がつくと、指をさして嘲笑った。勝手に写真を撮るものもいた。石を投げてくるものもいた。男はしまいに泣き出してしまった。

男はその場から逃げ出そうとして、路上の段差につまずいて転んだ。人々が取り囲み、一斉に笑いを浴びせかけた。ある母親が「ああいう大人になったらダメよ」と言って子供の手を引いていった。男は道にうずくまって泣き続けた。
