Prolouge
The girl vanishes from view and the woman sighs. "May you truly be the one to stop this." She says before turning around.
The woman jumps at the sight of a man. "You know she will have no memories if she uses the tools you sent her down with. She won't know why she is there. This was the stupidist plan you have ever come up with." He observes.
"What is it that humans always say? Have faith? Well have some faith. It's not like we had much choice. She was the only option and she shouldn't be sent down there helpless to the dangers she will face. It's not like there were many options available."
"We could have used contractors." The man said dismissively. He knew it wouldn't truly work, but he had to offer it up. It was the best option of the lot of bad that they had come up with to stop the bad tide that was coming in.
"Contractors are weak and there is severe fighting between the contractors. There is no support and very few manage to do anything besides die within a year." The woman enumerated succinctly, clearly having had this argument recently.
"So you have said. Multiple times. But we would at least be able to tell them what to do and have them remember it." The man stated wearily.
"And to have any pull to have them make a difference they would need to beseach something extraordinarily powerful. They would need to desire the ability to manipulate multiple lives. That would be the only thing that would balance our terms. What was the last thing a contractor asked you for?" The woman sternly reminded the man.
"The ability to stay away from alcohol. And then he changed his mind to want to change water into alcohol." The man stared at the womans eyes unwilling to admit the defeat he felt.
"Even the more powerful of us rarely get requests to alter the course of life or death. You would think they flow in but they don't. People like to pretend to want change in their lives but fewer than that are mentally able to accept that we actually have the power to intervene on their reality." The woman lectured.
"I know. I just hope that this wasn't all in vain, okay? I wish we had some assurances about what the girl will do when she forgets who she is. When she forgets what she is. When she forgets the reason why she inhabits the earth. Even if she never forgets which is impossible, she may not be able to complete her quest."
"We will just have to will it to be so. And hope that the girl is stronger than you give her credit for being."
