Chapter 1

Chapter 1

I looked around the bland hospital room. It was decorated in blue and grey. Pictures hung on the door and wall of my room. The colors comforted me and reminded me of home. I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the summer before sophomore year when I was fifteen. That was a year ago next week. 97% of victims of pancreatic cancer cases are at least forty five years old. I’m part of the other three percent.

I haven’t seen my parents in three months prior to my chemotherapy treatments. Today is my last day in this hospital. I’m going back home to New York with my parents.

I’m going to overcome my cancer and graduate before it kills me. That’s a promise. I slowly got out of bed not sure how weak my legs would be and got dressed into black leggings and a simple black t-shirt. My hair started falling out a month after I first started chemotherapy. So I wear a cocoa colored wig that goes to my shoulders.

A knock sounds at my door. Knowing it’s Wendy my nurse I open it. There stands Wendy in all her glory. Pale ivory skin and bronze hair cut in a bob. Dressed in the same purple scrubs she always wears she hugged me.

“I’m gonna miss you and your sassy attitude Luna.” Wendy’s voice cracked as she spoke letting go of my waist before resting her hand on my shoulder. She was tearing up. Tears burned my eyes as I felt my throat close up. “Hey, you have my number right we can always call.” I tried cheering Wendy up.

Wendy’s tears dried up soon after before she spoke again. “Promise?” I knew in a matter of a few years I could be dead. Still teary eyed I nodded. Wendy smiled before urging me out the door.

After we walked down the white halls of the hospital we came to the large lobby where I saw families and couples sitting and among them my parents.

I quickened my pace and jumped in my dad’s arms holding him tightly and inhaling the scent of his cologne. Before doing the same to my mom. Tears of joy poured down my face as I was reunited with my parents for the first time in months.

We began walking out the door but not before I waved goodbye to my only friend Wendy.

I was getting a second chance at high school and I would not be taking it for granted.
