Short story

The mind of a murderer

Is it just me? They all think it’s such a big deal, I don’t get it. Whatever, no biggie.

“Matt, you need to stop sleeping in the ditch. It’s unsanitary and you have always known you could stay at my place,” said Gia.

“Trust me, I’ll be just fine. I don’t need your help. I get enough change each day for two meals at McDonald’s next door. I shower at the gym. I have a sleeping bag. I’m good,” I said

“MATT. You’ll get three meals every day with me and we don’t just give you hand soap to shower with. Oh, and also you don’t run the risk of getting killed in your sleep (Or worse) every night with me,” Gia said.

“Whatever, I got to go, I’m hungry,” I said.

“Fine. Bye.” She said.

I got up and walked to McDonald’s. When I walked in, Bobby, the cashier, put in my usual order. A Bacon, egg, and cheese McGriddle and a Fruit N’ yogurt parfait. Oh, wait, and some OJ. I really wanted to stay with Gia, but that would ruin my plans. See, I actually care about Gia, which is a big problem for my… I guess you would say hobby. Oh, wait… It sounds creepy when I say it like that.

Lemme try again. It’s a kinda big problem for my hobby 😊. That smiley face makes it better. You might be wondering why I’m documenting all of this, but I guess you’ll find out soon. Yay, they called my name, time to eat. I’m done. I didn’t write about my McDonald’s food because it isn’t important to the storyline. You’re welcome. Gia just walked in, perfect. And no, I’m not being sarcastic. I had changed my mind while eating.

“Gia!”, I said.

“Hey, Matt,” She said.

“I take it back, I want to stay with you,” I said.

Her face lit up with a mixture of joy and confusion. “Why did you change your mind?” she asked.

“Because I decided I just don’t like the ditch anymore,” I said.

“Oh, okay,” She said. “Do you have anything you need to bring?”

“No, not at all,” I said.

We left the restaurant and got into her Mazda 3. It had been years since I got into a car… It smelled so clean. We had been riding for what seemed to be about 15 minutes when we slowed down and turned into a slim paved driveway with little night lights along the sides. I couldn’t see the house yet because there were trees alongside the driveway. As we eased around the corner, I saw that the house must have been like… 10,000 square feet. There were what seemed to be four stories, I had NOT assumed it was gonna be a mansion.

“Here we are!” She exclaimed

I cringed. She saw my face and asked, “What’s the matter? Don’t you like it?”

“Um... Yeah. It’s just unexpected, that’s all,” I said.

“Yeah, I guess so,” She said with an unconvinced smile.

We came to a stop and got out of the car. As we started to walk down the sidewalk to the front door, a large, scary man stepped out of the house.

“Who is that?” I asked.

“My husband,” She said.

My jaw dropped. “Oh…,” I said.

“What is it?” She said.

“It’s nothing,” I said.

She smiled and walked with me into the house. She introduced me to her husband, Daseo. He didn’t like me, I could tell. She showed me to my room, which seemed to be a hotel room, and I went straight to bed. I couldn’t resist a real mattress… so soft and warm. How long had it been? 5 years? 6? I didn’t care. It felt good. I slept through the rest of the day and through the night.

Well… Until 4 am. I couldn’t sleep anymore after that. I somehow found my way to the kitchen (At least one of them) and found a bottle of water and chugged it down. I went to where I thought was my room and opened the door to see Gia and Daseo sleeping. I grinned. I walked over to the bed and looked at Gia for a good 10 minutes. She was so pretty.

All of a sudden I heard a thump and realized that Daseo had fallen out of the bed. I wanted to make a good impression, so I woke him up and helped him to bed. He thanked me and then there was a long silence. Finally, he said, “Wait, why were you in here?” Oh crap. Ohhhh crap.

“I heard the thump and headed down as quickly as possible,” I said.

“That’s a lie. I woke up when I fell, not when you tried to wake me up. I didn’t hear the door open. You were already in here. Why?” He asked.

“The door was already open, and I was coming back from the kitchen,” I said.

“You changed the story,” He said.

“The first time, I said what I said because I thought you’d be angry because I was in your kitchen without asking,” I said.

“Oh, Nah. I don’t get mad about that stuff, You’re good. I must’ve left the door open. Goodnight,” He said.

“Goodnight,” I said. Then I walked out of the room and made my way to bed to tried to sleep again. I did. In the morning, I woke up to Gia standing at the end of the bed holding a plate. Suddenly, my senses snapped back out of sleep mode and noticed the amazing aroma filling the air.

“I made you breakfast,” She said softly.

“Oh, thank you,” I said. “It smells delicious.”

She handed me the plate and fork and I dug in. There were pancakes, hash browns, eggs, and a croissant. She also gave me coffee and orange juice. I like orange juice. As I ate, she observed everything I did. I didn’t like it, but I didn’t say anything because I was enjoying the silence. Finally, I was finished, and she took my dishes and left the room to wash them.

Alright. Planning time. Wait… did I even mention what I was trying to do and why I chose to stay here? Nope. Ok. It’s my hobby. That’s why. That'll be my 11th one, which I have worked very hard to get to. It’s actually why I’ve been homeless. You’ll see what it is soon. Ugh, I’m getting ahead of myself!

Anyway… planning. I’ll get going right after I’m done planning. First… leave the room. It can’t be done in the room because they’ll know it was me. It should be done near the front of the house so that there’s not too far to run afterward. I’m thinking… foyer! Okay… I’ll do it in the foyer, but with what? Rooms near the foyer… Kitchen!

The kitchen has dozens of things to use! I’m sure I’ll find something in the kitchen, but I don’t care what right now, living in the moment is one of the many things that make it fun! Okay, I have where and what… protection. I need to be protected so that none of my DNA is found. I need gloves to prevent fingerprints, booties to blur footprints, hairnet so that no hair comes out… Oh gosh! I can’t wear all of that stuff!

They’ll definitely suspect something. Wait! I can be cleaning. Yes… I’ll ask for money for cleaning supplies, go out and get a hairnet, booties, and gloves. Oh, and maybe some cleaner and magic erasers to really persuade them. Say… what will I say? Well… I’ll just ask for cleaning supplies, and when I get back, I’ll have to find some way to get only ONE person’s attention, and then I make the move. I’m done planning. Time to do. I slipped my notepad into my back pocket and headed downstairs to the kitchen to see Gia washing the dishes.

“You always have to hand wash ’em,” She said. “The dishwasher leaves tons of scum.”

“Yeah, definitely. So… I was wondering if I could borrow twenty bucks and your car,” I said.

“Sure, but why?” She asked.

“Cleaning supplies,” I said.

“Alright then. Keys are hanging by the door, and here’s twenty dollars,” She said as she handed me a $20 bill.

Then I left to go to Walgreens in her Mazda 3, without a license. They didn’t have booties, so I just got trash bags. They had everything else, though. I paid, walked out of the store, and drove back. I put everything on and walked into the house. When I walked into the door, surprisingly, Gia was standing in the doorway of the kitchen on her phone until she turned her head to look at me.

“You’re back! Great!” She said.

“Yep! Ready to clean the kitchen,” I said.

“Oh, no need. We have a maid,” She said.

“Well, less work for her, then!” I exclaimed.

“Well, ok. If you really want to,” She said, confused.

She walked out of the doorway and sat on the bench next to the door. I grinned, purposely facing away from her, and walked into the kitchen. Rushing to cut to the chase, I looked around the room for a sharp or heavy object. The first thing I saw was a rolling pin, and then a knife, and then a… Oooooh… frying pan! Perfect! I grabbed the frying pan (And the knife, just in case,) and slowly walked over to her. She didn’t hear me because she had headphones in her ears, which was convenient.

As I got to be about three feet away from her, she started to glance at me with a frightened look on her face, so I quickly swung the frying pan as hard as I could at her head, and she fell to the ground with an ear puncturing thump. I heard quick footsteps moving across the floor above me. Oh boy, Daseo. As I saw him turn around the corner of the stairs, he yelled, “I knew there was something wrong about you, Ma-”

I sprinted over and jabbed the knife into his neck, side, and eye as fast as I could. He screeched in pain as blood seeped through his lips and onto the marble floor. The gurgling sounds faded away as I watched his eyes transform into lifeless pools of pain. Two down, none to go. Well… Gia wasn’t dead, I made sure. I had plans for Gia, big plans. I left them on the floor and went into the kitchen to find the closest flammable chemical, which happened to be Clorox bleach.

I went all the way upstairs and left a trail of it back to where I had killed Daseo. I took Gia to the car and lay her down in the back seat where she couldn’t be seen by passing traffic and lit the bleach on fire. I took Gia to an abandoned warehouse and tied her to a roller chair. She woke up and said, “Matt? Where are we?”

“Shhh… we’re gonna play a game,” I whispered.

“Ow! My head… what happened?” She said, scared.

“I’m gonna close my eyes and count to 30, and you have to escape,” I said
