Chapter 1
The wind was whistling through the trees, causing me to clutch my hoodie tighter, in an attempt to stay warm. “Elena?” A familiar voice calls from behind me. I turn to face the owner of the familiar voice, my older brother had stepped out into the road in order to capture my attention. I look at him expectantly. “What are you doing?” He questions, looking at me like I’m insane. I furrow my eyebrows, a frown starting to pull at my frozen lips. “Going to school.”
“You’re not riding with Jasmine?” I shake my head. Jasmine is my best friend. I go to school with her nearly everyday, and she was supposed to come get me today but I can’t be late, and she won’t answer her phone. He waves me over to him, in which I reluctantly follow. “You could have just asked me for a ride. We do go to the same school you know.” I roll my eyes. “And risk your reputation? I’m not that evil.” I smirk.
My brother Alex was quite popular in high school, I on the other hand was not. I was average, which didn’t bother me any, I liked my small group of friends. The smaller the group the more real they are. Alex and I had some similarities, we both had brown hair. Mine was long, his was short. We both had olive skin, making us look like we had light tans, and both had green eyes. I follow my brother over to his Dodge Avenger, throwing my bag in the backseat and hopping in on the passenger side.
“Thanks for the ride. I would have been late if u walked.” I mumble.
“No problem. It’s to cold for you to walk anyways. December is approaching.”
I nod, and we sat in silence throughout the rest of the car ride. I wanted to know if Jasmine was deliberately ignoring me, why wouldn’t she just tell me that she couldn’t pick me up from school? I shrug to myself, sinking further into my seat. Whatever it is I’ll find out soon.
Once we arrived to the high school, I wasted no time, climbing out of the vehicle, and retrieving my bag from the backseat.
I sent a quick wave in my brother’s direction and started toward the doors. A few kids were sitting on the benches outside, conversing with their friends. They didn’t give me a second glance. I was a nobody here.
I pulled my cell phone out of my back pocket, and hit the button the side. I had three missed calls from Jasmine. I furrowed my eyebrows, swiping through my contacts in order to dial her back.
“Hey! Where are you?” She says exasperatedly into the phone. “I stopped by your place but you weren’t there.”
“Yeah, Alex drove me to school. I couldn’t get ahold of you.”
She sighs into the phone, and I can hear wind in the back ground. “Are you here?” I continue, turning back to the main doors in which I had previously entered. “Yeah. I just got out of my car. Im sorry Elena, I over slept. Jonathan had to wake me up.” Jonathan was our other best friend. “He slept at your house?”
“Yeah, we’ll see you in a second.” She says, ending the phone call.
I stand by the front doors patiently, when finally my two bestfriends come into sight. I smile at them, as they push through the two main doors, and joint me in the commons.
“Hey.” Jonathan chirps, planting a sloppy kiss on my cheek, in which I reluctantly wipe off. He places a hand to his chest as if I’d hurt him in some way. I roll my eyes at his dramatics. “We don’t have a lot of time to hangout.” I say, frowning.
“Yeah I know, but we’ll see you at lunch.” Jasmine says, linking her arm with Jonathan’s. “And I’ll see you in English.” I tell her, with a wink. She nods, and we all go our separate ways. I make my way to my first hour which happened to be history, and I sink into my seat at the back of the room.
I grabbed my text book from my bag, along with a binder, a notebook, and two mechanical pencils. I laid them on my desk in an orderly fashion, before stuffing my bag underneath my seat.
Our teacher was sitting at his desk, typing on his computer, savoring the last few minutes we had until the late bell rang. By now almost everyone was in their seats, except for a dark headed boy slid into the class room, right as the bell sounded.
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. Id never seen him before. His hair was shaggy, and he wore a black leather jacket, and a dark pair of skinny jeans. He was flawless.
Mr. Sawyer steps out from behind his desk, and takes in the boy at the front of the classroom. “Can I help you?” He questions, crossing his arms firmly over his chest. The boy flips his hair, pulling out a folded piece of paper from his pocket. He unfolds it, and hands it to Mr. Sawyer. Our teacher’s face softens, and he sends a slight nod. “You’re the new boy. Alright...,” Mr. Sawyer clears his throat, making his way toward the center of the classroom. At this point the classroom was quiet, eyes on the new boy.
“We have a new student, his name is Jaxon, I expect you all to be kind and courteous, although it looks like Mr. Turner here can take care of himself, the same rules apply to every new student.”
He diverts his attention back to Jaxon. “Sit anywhere you’d like. We don’t have assigned seats in this class.”
Jaxon nods, and makes his way toward the middle row of seats, sitting two seats ahead of me next to Valerie Potter. What are the chances. Valerie is the Queen bee of this school. I haven’t had any problems with her yet, but I do know that she’s not one to mess with. I’ve seen what she can do, and it probably wouldn’t work in my favor very much, considering her father is the principal of the school.
Class went by slowly, and eventually it was time for lunch. I’d have English afterwards with Jasmine. Jasmine and Jonathan were already waiting for me in the commons. I smiled at them once they came into view. “Hey guys.” I say, sinking into the seat across from my two best friends. Jonathan was looking off somehwere in the distance, day dreaming perhaps. I furrow my eyebrows looking between my two best friends. “What’s going on with him?” Jasmine shrugs. “There’s this new hot dude at school, and Jonathan can’t tear his eyes away.” She laughs.
I follow Jonathan’s gaze and they land on Jaxon. I roll my eyes, before turning back to my two best friends. “That’s Jaxon. He’s in my first period.”
“He is flawless.” Jasmine sighs, looking at the bad boy. I couldn’t disagree with her either. He was absolutely gorgeous. “And it looks like he’s friends with your brother.”
My jaw drops partially, and I whip my head around to see for myself. Sure enough Jaxon was sitting with Alex at the popular kids table. I shake my head in disbelief. He doesn’t even seem like the type of person my brother would hang out with. My brother is very stereotypical.
“That’s weird.”
Jasmine nods in response, although I’m not sure she actually heard me.
“Earth to Jasmine!” I shout, causing her to jump. She placed a hand to her rising chest. “Don’t do that!” She hisses, causing me to laugh.
“Well stop drooling over him. Go talk to him if you want, anything to stop you from drooling.”
Jasmine shakes her head. “I would, but Valerie is over there, and she’s clinging to him like a leach.”
“Doesn’t surprise me. Is he letting her?”
“Who wouldn’t?”
I nod, she had a point there. Valerie can get any guy she wants. She hates it when people get in her way, and she will do something to get them out of her way. One year she posted naked pictures of this one girl in our school, because she was dating Valerie’s ex boyfriend whom she wanted to get back with. She posted them on the school website and to everyone’s phone.
I reach across the table, retrieving an apple from Jonathan’s tray. “Hey!” He shouts in defense, finally removing his eyes from Jaxon. I shrug and taunt him by sinking my teeth into the juicy fruit. Jonathan glares daggers at me, and I attempt to hide the smile that has formed on my face. “The cafeteria has plenty of apples.” He hisses, reaching across the table, but before he could grab the apple, I pull my arm away, keeping it a safe distance away from him.
“It’s just an apple Jon.” Jasmine says, rolling her eyes. “but it was my apple.” He emphasizes. I laugh shaking my head and take another bite.
“The new hottie is looking over here.” Jasmine gushes, fixing her hair discretely. “Do you think he’s looking at me?”
I roll my eyes. I couldn’t help but notice some familiarities about him. Something about him just seemed familiar but I couldn’t put my finger on it. I would remember seeing a guy so.... perfect. I shake the thought from my head, and continue to eat the apple that I had stolen. Jonathan had appeared to have forgotten about the piece of fruit and was now gushing over Jaxon along with Jasmine. “He’s so sexy.” He sighs. “To bad he’s straight.”
I laugh. “What if he wasn’t?”
Jonathan turned to me, his face looking quite serious as he did so. He folded his hands on the table as if we were conducting some type of meeting.
“A gay can almost always point out another gay, and he’s just not it.”
I guess that made since in some way. Jonathan is a very stereotypical gay. If he can’t tell the difference between someone who’s straight and someone who isn’t then... he’d probably be single forever and end end up in a few hospitals for making false assumptions.
As much as I wanted to enjoy this time with my friends they were to busy fawning over Jaxon, and he was a topic that I didn’t take pleasure in discussing. Sure he was attractive, you’d have to be insane not to notice that, but that’s all. I had no desire to persue him, or attempt to make him notice me. Guys like that, and girls like me don’t mix. I just wish my friends would see that. Valerie already has her sights set on him, and they’d be smart to stay out of her way. It’s unnecessary drama, and I don’t want to see them get hurt over some stupid guy that they don’t even know.
The rest of lunch went by pretty quickly. Lunch was my favorite time of the day, probably because I got to rest my mind from school work.
Jasmine and I were now on our way to English class. “Why don’t you ever use your locker?” She questions, stopping by the lockers to retrieve her text book and binder. I shrug. I didn’t know the answer to her question. I just always felt more comfortable having my belongings on me at all times. Maybe because I keep a diary in my bag so I can write in it whenever I need to, but I didn’t want to tell her that was the reason why. Because in all honesty I don’t know if it was the only reason for me keeping my stuff on me.
Jasmine Slams her locker door shut and we walk into the classroom down the hall.
“Eek!” She shrieks, causing me to cover my ears to prevent my ear drums from being blown out. I glare at her for her sudden shriek, and everyone in class turns to look at us. “What?” I hiss, hesitantly removing my hands from my ears.
She grabs my arm and leads me over to the bulletin board. I look at the poster that had recently been hung there, my eyebrows furrowing at what she had been so ecstatic about.
“We’re doing the Romeo and Juliet play next month, after Christmas break.”
I roll my eyes. “Joy.” I retort sarcastically. I tug on jasmines arm urging her to come on so that we can find our seats. Finally she does.
For some reason all of our desks were paired up into fours today. “New assigned seats?” I question, looking over at Jasmine. Jasmine and I always ended up seated together, probably because I had asked Mrs. Watson to let me sit by Jasmine at the beginning of the year and so far she’s kept to that.
Students were out of their seats looking at the chalk board, and talking amongst themselves.
“Look.” Jasmine says, pointing to the board. “There’s writing on the board.” She grabs my arm and leads me to join the majority of the class. Unfortunately we couldn’t see what the writing said, not until more students moved out of our way.
We waited patiently, and finally it was our turn to view the board.
New Assigned seats
The top of the board read. I narrowed my eyes looking for my name when finally I found it. Jasmine, Elena, Jaxon, and Raven. I roll my eyes, turning to look at Jasmine whose face had lit up, and she was on the verge to squealing again.
“Don’t.” I order, shaking my head and walking over to our new assigned seats. Jasmine follows me.
I sink into the desk on the left, Jasmine taking the spot next to me, and Raven across from her. Which would mean... Jaxon would be sitting in front of me. How the heck am I supposed to concentrate now?
“Wow.” Raven sighs, a sudductive look playing on her face as she looks toward the door. I knew exactly who that ‘wow’ was for, so I didn’t even bother turning to see for myself.
Raven was very pretty. She had auburn hair, blue eyes, and a smile to die for. Much prettier than I’d ever be. Jasmine was even prettier than me. Jasmine had Lin blonde hair with blue eyes. She was very well into fashion and she always made sure to make a statement. I was dull compared to the two of them.
Raven and I were friendly acquaintances. We mostly only talked in class, and sometimes if we ran into each other at the mall, but never anywhere else.
Before I could finish my thoughts, Jaxon sank into the desk across from me, his cologne toying with my senses. Raven looks over at him with a smirk. “Hi.” She says. “I’m Raven. I don’t believe that we’ve met.” He glances at her and answers with a nod, before looking down at his belongings in which he retrieved from the floor, and starts to take out the things he’d need for this class.
Jasmine was nervously chewing away at her finger nails, and I almost laughed out loud. I bit my lip to contain myself, when finally the bell rang signaling us that it was time for class to start.
“Okay class!” Mrs. Watson says, walking toward the bulletin board with a pointer. “I assume you all found your assigned seats, with that being said let’s move on.” She picks up the pointer and uses it to point to the poster hanging from the board. The one that jasmine and I had looked at previously. “We will be doing the Romeo and Juliet play next month.”
Groans erupted throughout the classroom, earning glares from the teacher and from Jasmine who had always been obsessed with the story.
“Come on guys, give it a chance.” Raven says, turning in her seat. “It could be fun.”
Raven was a very outgoing and optimistic person, I envied her for it. She always tried to find the good in every situation regardless of what that situation might be.
Jaxon sat slouched down in his seat, it didn’t even look like he was paying attention to what was even going on around him. I rolled my eyes. Typical ‘bad boys’.
“Romeo and Juliet is a classic,” Mrs. Watson continues. Jaxon scoffs, catching the attention of our peers and our teacher.
“Do you have something you’d like to say Mr.....,”
“Turner.” He answers, sitting up in his seat. Turner? Why is his name so familiar ? It’s like... I know him from somewhere. “And not really. It’s just that this play has been done over and over and over again...” he trails on, talking with his hands.
“Yeah because this is an English class, and it was written by Shakespeare.” I retort. “You think we won’t be doing the Caesar play as well?”
Jasmine looks over at me, her mouth partially agape. Jaxon’s blue eyes bore a hole through my own, and a small smirk begins to tug at the corner of his mouth. “Is that anyway to talk to a new student Elena?”
My breath hitches in my throat at the sound of my name, rolling off of his lips.
“How do you know my name?”
