Mushroom Factory
A door upon the side of a mesa is a cause to be curious. An unlocked door upon the side of a mesa is the cause to go in and poke around; or in the case of my boyfriend and I, a cause to think that we would be alone inside. We were both concerned about this, of course, I’d like to think neither of us are stupid, but we were a bit love drunk and those thoughts that normally would have clouded our minds had seemed to dissipate into thin air.
Inside the mesa, the walls were metal and had pipes running the length of them. It was pretty magnificent to see. Of course, it still seemed pretty outlandish, I’d be lying if I said neither of us were befuddled. The floor was cement and damp but it seemed clean enough for the two of us. He pressed me to the wall, and pressed his lips to mine. I loved to kiss him, I loved that ashy taste that smoker’s had. My hands combed his long blonde hair. He hiked one of my legs up and his hands spidered up my shirt underneath my blazer. “Oh, Ray!” I moaned, as his lips planted kisses upon my neck.
A noise from up above made the two of us stop and look up, and who we saw above us made our mouths fall open. A man in a snowy white hazmat suit, and that was enough to get me scared – I have a terrible fear of diseases, but what made my boyfriend join me in running towards the door was the fact he held an axe, and there was blood dripping from it. “We gotta get out of here!” he cried and we both crashed into the wall where the door had been.
I slammed my palms on the metal wall. “Open the door!” I screamed. “Please! Open the door!”
We watched as the man ran off from our view. We decided to go deeper into the place, maybe we could lose the man with the axe? We knew it was a pipe dream, but a pipe dream was better than staying there. The hallways had now turned red, not with blood, the lights themselves were red. Steam swirled around our ankles. An open pipe whistled steam at me and I screamed and jumped into my boyfriend’s arms.
“We’re getting out of this, babe,” he said, and I remember looking up at him. He was older than me. Much, much, much older than me. I worked for him at his law office. We heard a loud clanging noise and looked up. The man was coming down some stairs. “We gotta hide!”
We made a right and about ran into the psycho who had the axe raised and waiting for us, giving us both a mini heart attack. We went back and made the left. “Ray! Ray! There’s no place to hide! We’re going to die!” I cried, this whole damn thing was sickening.
He grabbed my hand and led me up some stairs but at the end of the metal walkway, the inconnu man in the hazmat suit was already there, his axe dragging behind him. He put the axe in front of him and began to wag it back and forth so it clanged into the rails on either side. That sound is truly hellish. “Don’t take a step closer!” growled Ray, pushing me behind him.
That didn’t stop the silent man. “Oh, Ray, I’m scared!” I cried. “What does he want!”
We ran down another set of stairs. We turned this way and that way, we were getting lost in this metal maze but we found a hiding spot. Lockers. We both hid in separate lockers. The man came what felt like hours later, and came right up to my locker. And tears spilled from my eyes. From next to me, I heard a loud pound. “I love you!” It was Ray. What the fuck was he doing!? I heard a loud squishing noise, a noise horror films led me to know as a body being chopped up.
The man walked away once the pieces of my boyfriend fell from the confines of the metal locker, his axe dragging behind him like some macabre tail. I exited the locker, and there was a door, open wide, leading to the world outside.
