Prison
Black was the inside of her cell, the bars were stronger than steel and thicker than any mans arm. There was something in the air, it felt heavy like breathing in was harder with every breath you took.
The misty air entered her and caused confusion, surely she had seen light a moment ago somewhere far beyond her cage. Now it was shrouded in black fog that whispered and taunted her.
“You are worthless, nothing you do will ever matter” the mist hissed at the girl who sat huddled in the corner of her cell. It knew all her weaknesses and made her strengths seem meaningless.
“Nothing you do will ever matter because you don’t matter” tears rolled down the girls cheeks as she covered her ears with her hands in a vain attempt to keep the whispers out.
"My name is Hannah" she whispered to herself trying to hold on to something from before. Her name was all that she had in this dark and horrible place.
“You don’t have a name because you are nothing and you will always be nothing” the girl could not escape the haunting blackness nor the whispers that it brought with it. Her hands were raw from trying to escape. Her skin covered in battle wounds.
She looked up into the darkness bravely defiant for a moment only to shrink back as the whispers became louder. The fog angered that she had dared to stand against its power. It was the master of her, she belonged to it and she could never leave.
"My name is... My name..." she was sure she'd had a name but she couldn't remember it anymore. She couldn't remember anything anymore.
The fog was the guard to her prison, the cell had no key, no door, it simply was. The girl couldn't remember entering it but she knew there was no exit.
Every so often she thought there was light in the distance and the darkness would swoop in and wrap itself around her in a twisted dance in which she had no control.
“Do you remember all the times you failed?” the girl couldn’t help remembering as the mist told her to. She remembered everything. The grades that should have been better, the sporting awards that should have been hers. The humiliation of knowing your not good enough, that you are destined to fail.
She was locked in with her memories and the fog and so there she stayed until the tears turned to blood and the whispering became yelling.
There was no sound and no light and yet there was, hope and happiness lay just out of the girls reach. Taunting her until the voices won and she became nothing. Until one day the cell was empty, the girl having vanished into herself so completely that there was nothing left.
