AMBERLEY

All I could hear was the crush of leaves under my feet, my fast-beating heart, and the growls of a wolf that was currently chasing me. I just had to keep running and hopefully lose him; after all, it has become something I am very good at. I had been running since that awful night four years ago, and I will continue to run until the time is right. With my thoughts racing a mile a minute, I had not noticed the sound of the river ahead of me and came to an abrupt stop realizing I was at the end of the trail. It would take mere seconds for me to swim across it. Still, I knew that once I got to the other side, I would be surrounded by werewolves, I could sense their territory border. The last thing I wanted to do was to draw more attention to myself. I slowly turned around to come face to face with the rouge that had chased me here.

‏“Please, I beg you do not do this!” I started to plead with him. I knew who he was, I recognized his wolf the moment I saw him. ‏“Please, Thomas, I do not want to be the cause of your death, stand down!” That just seemed to make matters worse has his growl grew louder, and he got into his attack position, getting ready to pounce at me. I fell to my knees, tears streaming down my face. I knew there was no reasoning with him; his eyes were a vicious color of red, meaning he had not turned into his human self in a long time, and the Thomas I knew was long gone, lost to his wolf. No longer the sweet man that belonged to my father‏’s council. No longer the man whose lap I would sit on while I listened to the stories he would tell me when I was younger. Thomas became this way because he refused to follow my Uncle after the takeover, he chose this path willingly. It pained me, knowing that someone from my pack became like this and hurt me more to know that more are out there. ‏“Thomas, I will make things right again, I promise, I am so sorry.” I brought my hands to my eyes to cover them, not wanting to see his death.

‏“Ajax,” I whispered. Then the sounds of growls, struggling, and whimpers flooded my ears as I cried out for yet another loss. Feeling my heartbreak again, how many more loved ones would die? I knew I had to do something, but I also knew it wasn’t‏ the time yet. Certain things needed to fall in place first. I felt Ajax approaching me has he used his snout and rubbed it against my cheek to try and comfort me. I wrapped my arms around his furry neck and cried until I had no more tears left. I learned early on to cry hard once then move forward; there was too much loss in my life to always hold on to it. I wiped my eyes then looked at the naked human body behind Ajax. ‏“Thank you for his quick death.” He nodded his head. ‏“We need to bury him properly, please help me.” It took an hour to find the right spot, dig a hole, and find enough rocks to cover the grave. Once we were done, I said a silent prayer to the Moon goddess, then looked at Ajax, ‏“We should get moving before they do their border patrol and find a spot to set camp for tonight.”

‏“We should stay close to the river and work our way East,” He mind linked me.

“Agreed,” I replied. I gathered my stuff then climbed upon him, I was too drained mentally, physically, and emotionally to walk by myself. I am so grateful to have him in my life and that he found me randomly one day. He told me he was a Guardian Wolf and knew my true identity so he would protect me with his life. He has been by my side for two years now, and I couldn’t‏ imagine my life without him. As I closed my eyes and listened to the soothing sound of the river, I quickly fell asleep on top of him.

*dream*

I was‏ not sure where I was going, but I knew I had to keep running. Struggling, I finally stopped to pick my dress up to my knees and took off again. I didn’t know what happened, but I knew it was not good. We were in the middle of the pledge ceremony when we heard ‏“attack” through the pack bond. Before anyone could register what was happening, my parents were captured, people were dying, and I was shoved through a secret door. All I knew was that our attackers were part of our own pack. Now I am running barefoot through a secret tunnel I never knew existed, tears streaming down my face and dirt all over me from falling. I couldn’t control my breathing or my thoughts as I heard the screams and cries of confusion from my pack members.

“Run my beautiful, strong daughter, run and don‏’t look back. There will be witches waiting for you. Your mother and I love you so much, and we are so proud of you.” My father spoke to me through the family link. I knew only me and my mother could hear him. ‏“I love you, mom, and dad!” I said a moment before I felt it. ‏“NO!” I dropped to my knees, and my hands went to my heart as I could feel the Alpha bond being replaced, which meant that my father had just spoken his last words to me before he died. I shook my head vigorously, not wanting to believe this was happening that it was just a bad dream, and I was trying to force myself awake again.

The new Alpha made his voice heard, ‏“You have a new Alpha Moonlight Pack!” My heart stopped again, I knew that voice all too well. My father was killed by his own brother, my Uncle.

‏“Samuel has died as you all are aware, and now you all will bow down to me, King Victor! I want the Princess found and brought to me immediately! If I found out that you helped her escape or are hiding her, you will be punished!” I was shaking with rage, we all knew he wanted power, but we never imagined him to kill his own flesh and blood for it. I mentally blocked the pack connection then wiped my tears with my dirty hands has I picked myself up and began to run for my life. I had to stay alive and escape so that later I could avenge my family and my pack. It took a good few minutes, but I finally reached the end of the tunnel, I opened the small door that led to the shore. I turned my head around to see flames coming from my home town. Tears started to build up again, but I just pushed them back. I heard footsteps approaching from behind, I got myself ready for a fight, and I would not go down easy! ‏“Princess Theia! Thank the Moon goddess you are okay, please come with us we must hurry.”

‏“Who are you?” reluctant to follow strangers.

‏“We are witches and dear friends of your mother‏’s, please child come with us, we will get you to a safe place then explain everything.” The woman witch walked up to me and placed something around my neck, ‏“Here, this will hide your scent for now.” I picked up the necklace and instantly recognized it has something that belonged to my mother. ‏“Okay, I will go with you, but if you try anything funny, I will kill you.”

She smiled, ‏“So much like your mother.” I followed them to a boat waiting for us. I decided to send a message knowing that once I stepped off this land that the pack link would break, and I would become a rouge, ‏“You are truly a bastard with a death wish, my dear Uncle.”

‏“You finally made an appearance, my little niece. Come willing to me, or I will force you!”

‏“You are too late, Victor I am already at a border about to cross.”

‏“You would rather become a rogue than submit to me!”

‏“Damn straight, you asshole!”

‏“You see my pack, your beloved Princess would rather run than defend you!”

‏“Do not mistake me running for cowardliness! My father, the rightful King, taught me never to go into a fight that you cannot handle at that very moment but to regroup then attack. So mark my words, Uncle… I will be back for your head along with all those that blindly followed you tonight and reclaim my throne!” I could hear howls, ‏“I, Delta Tomas, refuse to bow to a dickless asshole and will follow the Princess as a rouge. If anyone feels the same, grab what you can and run to the border.” I heard one after another follow behind Thomas.

‏“You all will die!” my Uncle fumed.

‏“I will get revenge, my beloved Moonlight Pack, I promise.” I let myself get into the boat has I felt the bond break. I sat and watched the flames in the night then I heard him, the roar was deafening even from how far away we were, but I knew it was him and my heart broke once more that night.

‏“Amberley! Wake up! We have company!” Ajax‏’s voice flooded into my nightmares. I woke up startled, giving my eyes time to adjust to the slight darkness of the sun setting, realizing I must have been asleep for a while. Taking in my surroundings, I realized the river we were following had turned more into a creek, and that trees were thick in this area. Alarming, there were also a dozen pairs of golden eyes all around us. Ajax let off a growl in warning, but they seemed to not listen as they drew closer. ‏“Shit!”

‏“I will not let them harm you, Princess,” both of us trying to come up with a solution to our current problem.

I spotted the Alpha immediately; he was huge, the size of Ajax, but his color was gray with specks of white everywhere and one white paw. Instead of being in front of us, he was approaching from the right, almost as a test. I looked him died in the eyes, ‏“If we have crossed into your territory by accident, I am truly sorry. We mean no harm and would like to be on our way.” I knew we had‏’t, Ajax would‏’t have let that happen because of this very reason. The Alpha must have allowed his men to cross the border to be able to surround us as they did. He looked around to his men, which I knew he was mind linking them, and the men bowed into a submitting position showing us that they meant no harm either. I turned back to him, ‏“What do you want?” He stepped closer while sniffing the air trying to catch my scent, Ajax growled in his chest, causing the Alpha to pause, then he throws his head back, pointing it to the North. Finally, understanding, ‏“You want us to follow you?” He nodded to my question.

‏“What should we do?” I asked Ajax.

“I think we should follow them if worst comes to worst we can make an escape.”

‏“But can we trust them?”

‏“We will have to find out.” With that, Ajax started to stroll towards the Alpha, I assume he was giving him a warning. The Alpha turned around to lead the way while the others stayed around us.

An hour later, I started to see the town that was nestled in between the mountains below us. It was breathtaking, and I immediately felt envious of everyone there knowing they were with their families and friends, that their pack was intact. I realized we were making our way to the packhouse, to say it was huge would be an understatement. It was very modern, it was white with thin black trim around massive windows, and black doors, different types of greenery grew alongside the house. It was beautiful and told me this pack had money…lots of it. I began to rack my brain on which pack it could be and prayed it was‏ not one, in particular, I was not ready to face him. Once we got up to the front of the house, I realized half the wolves, including the Alpha, disappeared. So I hopped off Ajax ready to head inside when a huge man held out his hand, ‏“No dogs allowed inside.” I laughed, ‏“So does that mean you‏’re not allowed either?” I heard chuckles around me. He looked mad, ‏“Alpha says he has to stay outside, you are to go in alone.” At that moment, Ajax yanked me back, pulling on my jacket with his jaws carefully pulling me behind him. ‏“Over my dead body.”

‏“Yeah that is not going to happen, tell your Alpha that we are a package deal.” I could tell they were talking through the bond, ‏“This way.” He finally let us pass.

Once we entered my poor nose was hit with awful smells, I looked around and saw that the packhouse was a pigsty. Clothes, shoes, food containers were everywhere. Where were the den mothers? They took care of all this or at least took charge of everything containing the house. This confused me. We made our way to the back of the house to which I assumed was, what most packs called, the war room. I followed the blonde jerk from earlier into a massive red room, yep it is the war room. There was a huge wooden table in the center that sat more huge men, which I assumed were the top people in the pack. My eyes studied them one by one until they fell on a familiar pair of grey eyes. ‏“Shit!” I realized too late that I said that out loud because everyone seemed to stir at my response to their Alpha.

‏“What is wrong, Amberley?”

‏“It is him.”

‏“Are you going to be okay with this?”

‏“I am going to have to be.”

I took the chance to study him before the interrogation started. I looked at him, he has changed so much. His shaggy brown hair with his bangs ending just above his eyes. He still has that golden tan making him look like a greek god, despite living in the mountains. But dang he is enormous now because of him being the Alpha. He was ripped as hell, I could see the outline of his muscles through his shirt. I wanted to just run up to him and let him take me in his arms, but I knew I couldn’t just yet. I had to asses the damage caused by my Uncle first. I finally closed my eyes and took a deep breath to face a man that I did not think I would see again ever.
