Empty Bottle

Suddenly she was ten again. She felt the tears running down her cheeks as she held tightly to her mother's hand. She was frightened as she gazed at the white walls of the hospital. Her heart racing as her mother opens the door. She ran in the moment she saw her brother. Her long brown hair flying back as she hugged him. Her beautiful amber eyes were red from crying. She heard the door close as her mother gave the two of them some time alone. She cried in her brother's arms. He held her and stroked her hair.

"Don't worry. It'll be alright," he whispered softly in her ear.

"I don't want to lose you," she said through her tears. "Promise me you won't ever do it again."

"I promise. Don't you worry Sky."

That was six years ago since her brother attempted to overdose. He always kept his promise, until last night. She wanted to show him a necklace she made him in art class for his birthday and instead she found him lying on the bathroom floor with an empty pill bottle next to him. She screamed his name until her mother came running. Her mother called an ambulance. They took him away and she and her parents drove to the hospital as fast as they could. They waited to her from the doctor. After ten long minutes the doctor came to them.

He cleared his throat and spoke the five words that would change her life. "I'm sorry for your loss."

Tears ran down her cheeks and she fell into her mother's arm. She couldn't believe it.

Now she was at his grave. She had just attended his funeral. She knelt down and placed the red rose she had been holding. She whispered to his grave, "Sorry I couldn't wish you a happy birthday Jack. I wish you didn't break your promise. I miss you." She broke down in sobs. She collected herself and walked to the car where her parents were waiting. She remembered what she promised her brother that night at the hospital.

"Promise me you'll always stay strong, no matter what," her brother had told her.

"I promise," is what she replied and she intended to keep that promise.
