Chapter 1
It’s December. At least I think it is. It’s very cold, and the snow is ferociously pouring down. I haven’t seen a clock much less a calendar since The Assault of Justice.
Everything changed after The Assault of Justice. Humans and werewolves no longer lived in harmony. The werewolves took over our American democracy, and now ruled with humans as their slaves.
I never expected my life to be like this. One minute you’re in your own home, and then the next, you’re being dragged out by vicious dogs.
I was always aware of werewolves existing. This isn’t a story about finding out werewolves exist. My father and two brothers are both werewolves, but unfortunately for me, my mother is a human. I guess you can already assume my luck; I inherited my mother’s human traits.
So now here I stand in the slave house for the eighth time in five years to be sold to the next highest bidder, only to be sold again within the next month.
It’s not that I act out of turn purposefully, I just don’t agree with being treated like a pile of shit, or seeing someone else being treated in that manner. That being said, this is the reason why I’m being sold again.
I move closer and closer to the stage, awaiting my turn to be auctioned off. With the bright lights beating down on my neck and back, sweat starts beading at the top of my forehead. I try to swipe away the remnants before my number is called.
“423,” I hear the auctioneer say and I step forward.
As soon as my feet hit the stage I feel someone’s eyes on me, commanding my attention. I look up, meeting the eyes of the commander, and my breath catches in my throat. His gold eyes bore into mine, observing me very closely. I feel them travel from my head all the way down my body, as if he were caressing me with every touch.
I try my hardest to look away, I know I should, but I am drawn to him as if we were connected somehow. I immediately know what we are. MATES.
I look down at my feet, breaking the contact. I still still feel his eyes on me, but I know I can’t give into it, I can’t react to him. If I do, I could be killed.
Mates among humans and werewolves are supposed to be a thing of the past by this point. We are enemies, and I would be put in a dangerous situation if either of us acted upon this pull.
I hear bidding going on around me, but all I can do is stare at my feet. It’s as if I’m frozen in place under his icy gaze. I’m sure he’s just as surprised as I am that his mate is human. Poor him. I guess the moon goddess does have a sense of humor. I smile to myself. It serves him right after everything his kind has put my race through.
I then hear a voice that commands the entire room of chaos around me say, “She’s mine.”
The auctioneer was the next to speak, “Commander Romano, this girl has been sold eight different times in five years. Are you sure you want to take her under your wing?”
“There is no question,” he replied.
“This one is off the market,” the auctioneer said.
