Chapter 1

The e in life-abew stands for embility. Embility doesn't mean you get two or even three powers, it means you get all of them. My element is embility. But I don't know that yet.

My name is Kitara, Mt hair is wavy light Auburn the fades to gold and blond in some places and reaches my ankles in a braid. My eyes are metallic silver with gold streaks laced throughout them.

In my childhood, my parents were abusive drunks. Because of them, I learned to always be cautious and listen to the little voice in my head. And ever since we got to this island, she has been telling me it wasn't safe.

We set up camp in a clearing of lush grass and everyone was asleep. Bordering the camp was a ring of dark trees. xcept for me. I've learned the little voice in my head is always correct. Her name is Ashley and, no, I'm not crazy. Ashley and I can hold on conversations and she will tell me stuff I never heard about, but when I look it up, it's true. She is someone else who is trapped in my brain. I have heard her since I was six.

Ashley was telling me something bad was coming, and I was listening. Get up. Something really bad is really close. Don't bother waking any of these yepis up. The storm that sunk the ship gave you something. Something unusual I've never felt before. What do you think it is? Any tips on how to use it? I felt the soft dirt beneath my feet as I stood up.

I took a step past a clearing of grass and into the darker area where the trees blocked out the stars, and then saw something terrifying. A long, skinny beast with a long neck, flat, pointy snout, two giant wings, a pair of large, twisted horns, and copper red scales stood in front of me. Because it was so dark, I could barley see him but his scales emitted a dull light and his red, slitted eyes shone brightly.

A dragon. Ye no duh. What do I do? Dragons are predators. Stand your ground but look down. Of you make eye contact or try to look threatening he WILL see it as a challenge and attack. If you run you are prey. The dragon growled at me. I heard him step closer. His snout was suddenly under my chin as he lifted my face up. Uhhhh what do I do now? I have know idea. Gee that's really helpful. Well I'm sorry that I don't often hang out with dragons.

Then the dragon finished lifting my head. He pulled his neck back and used the joints of his wings and his two back legs to sit on. I made eye contact. As crazy as this sounds, I felt no fear. "Hello Mr. Dragon, please don't eat me." I said. "Ah, so the pretty little flower speaks." The dragon said in a deep voice. "I think I should take you back to my cave, little flower. I've always wanted a pet."

This is when you run. "Ye, about that... No thanks." I turned on my heels and sprinted into the woods. However, the dragon wasn't going to let me go that easy. I swerved around trees but he was still hot on my trail, seeing as I couldn't see. I heard trees crashing into the ground close behind me. Turn right here. Ashley told me. I obeyed. Go left. There is a river there. Stop at the river and stand your ground. I reached the rushing water and spun around as the dragon turned the corner. I stared into his eyes. He said, "You have no place to go, pretty little flower. Come with me or I'll burn you to a crisp."

You won't go with him. So I let him burn me? Just say it. And I did, "I won't go with you. " He shrugged. "Fine. Have it your way. He opened his mouth and let out a burst of red fire. I put my hands out in front of me and closed my eyes. When I opened them, the fire was parting around me. I was somehow bending the fire. The flames stopped coming and as I gazed upon the dragon he appeared satisfied. Then he saw me, unharmed, standing in front of him.

He went to fire again, but I followed my instincts and pointed at a tree. One of the branches sprang forward and wrapped around his mouth. Now the dragon was angry. He lunged towards me and I ducked.

The tree branch snapped off the tree but held around his mouth. One of his two feet (he only had two powerful back legs) the size of a welcome mat, scratched through my shirt, from my neck to my back. He flew away into the night sky. I pointed to the sky and a lightning bolt struck him. He faltered for a moment but continued flying.

I tried to stand up but stumbled and fell into the river. As it washed me away, I looked up at the surface of the water, so pretty. You need to swim up or you will drown. But it is so peaceful. Swim! SWIM! I ignored her. I took a breath of water. It felt like I had just brushed my teeth and then drank water, but I could breath. Then the water I saw turned red and I closed my eyes.
