Prologue
A Facility Somewhere in Siberia, 118 years ago...
A man sprinted through the pristine sky blue halls, his pale lab coat flailing. The halls seemed like crystalline mirrors. It wasn't quiet. Sirens blared. Red lights were flashing. The man's black hair flowed in the wind, his red eyes glared ahead, his black everything except the white lab coat, made it seem like he was a shadow. The man's name was Doctor Winter. His shoes clacked along the clean floor. Eventually he arrived at a brown oak door with a golden knob. Winter entered through the door to see a luxurious room. A red carpet leading up to a desk. The room was made up of spruce wood. There were red leather seats. Bookshelves lining the walls. A fireplace crackled. Behind the desk, a tall man with broad shoulders stared out the facility. The man had his left arm behind his back, and a glass of what appeared to be brandy in his right. "Sir!" Winter called.
"Doctor." The man said. "Why is the Base in chaos?"
"It got out Sir." Winter replied. The man turned and placed his brandy on the desk. His grey eyes pierced Winter's soul, a cactus green uniform was fresh compared to the red and brown room, and a grey buzz cut for hair making his fierce image even scarier.
"Which one?" The man asked, his body showed no sign of fear. His eyes on the other hand showed true fear.
"Virus 18 Sir." Winter said. "It makes teenagers aged thirteen to eighteen crave blood."
"Assemble the world leaders!" Yelled the man. The man walked towards the door but just as he swung it open, Winter placed his hand onto the man's shoulder.
"There's more." Winter stated. The man turned, an eyebrow raised. "An extremely small percentage of the infected, may gain supernatural abilities not unlike the Entities. Said abilities, will be able to evolve and branch into new abilities."
"What are the odds of these powers?" The man asked.
"A quarter." Winter replied, solemnly.
"I'll take those odds. Turn off the alarms! And assemble the world leaders!" The man replied.
"Yes Sir!" Winter Yelled.
One Week After Virus 18's Escape, A Hidden Meeting Area...
Doctor Winter and the man walked through an amber hallway. The surfaces were just as reflective as the facility. The man's name was Corporal Geoffrey Donovan. A veteran of any kind of military force. "Are they all here?" Geoffrey questioned.
"Yes sir. Everyone." Winter replied. The two continued to walk in silence. The only sound, their footsteps infinitely echoing in the halls. The two eventually arrived at what appeared to be a balcony. They stepped onto the balcony to see every world leader there was. United States of America. England. Russia. China. Australia. Everyone. "Thank you everyone for coming!" Geoffrey boomed.
"What is this about?" The American president called.
"We regret to inform you, that one of our viruses has gotten loose." Geoffrey explained. Chatter erupted from the delegates. Geoffrey attempted to quiet them, but after thirty seconds of the chatter growing louder, Geoffrey boomed for them all to be quiet. All eyes now returned to him. "Doctor Winter will explain the situation." Geoffrey stepped out of the way, and Winter stepped forward.
"I stand before you all so I may explain the situation. Our virus subject 18, codename Savage Youth Virus, has managed to circumvent our security and has now been released. We suspect it was an inside job." Winter explained.
"What does this virus do?" Asked the Queen of England.
"It gives humans aged thirteen to eighteen a peculiar blood lust. Symptoms include the previous statement, faster mental maturity, and one more thing we will get to." Winter replied. More chatter that quickly died down.
"Peculiar?" Asked the Prime Minister of Australia.
"Yes. No savages. But they will want to kill. They will defy rules no matter who they are. They could be rule following robots and break the laws in order to kill. They wn be savage, they'll be themselves, but will have a need to kill." Winter explained. "Now there is a low percentage of the infected that will gain supernatural-like abilities. And in this percentage the odds of abilities gained that have this genome, is one quarter."
"And what do you propose we do about this?" A voice yelled.
"I suggest we all formulate an initiative. We know for a fact that the virus has reached two secondary schools in Taiwan causing them to go to war. We have not supplied guns. But maybe, we should allow killing." Winter explained. Chatter arose. One man yelled that it was an absurd idea. "Here me out!" Winter yelled. "It is impossible to contain and/or cure this infection! So we must go with it!"
"And what do you suppose we call this Initiative?!" A voice called.
"The Darwin Initiative." Winter replied.
"We will call you back for our decision." Another voice yelled.
Three Weeks After Virus 18's Escape, A Hidden Meeting Area...
Winter sighed. For once in three weeks, Winter felt relaxed. He was about to step head first into the decision of the governments. Corporal Donovan was already in there talking to them. Winter walked into the meeting. "The council recognises Doctor Winter." Geoffrey called.
"Salutations everyone. I am excited to hear your verdict." Winter said. In truth, Winter was more scared of the conclusion.
"We, the council of the world, have agreed to the Darwin Initiative." Answered the President of the US. Winter smiled. This is, survival of the fittest.
