Chapter 1

I finally had everything I could ever need. The strength from my family, the best friend relationship with my brother. And then there’s Lakken, we may not be mates but that doesn’t matter to us. He is my other half, my soulmate. We’ll just have to prove to the world that nothing can come between us. My name is Nayeli and this is my story.

Nayeli-

Just like any other morning it was time for our family breakfast. I better hurry or Remi will eat all the good stuff. He’s always finding different ways to terrorize me. Not this this time, though. I got an idea. I’ll just block his door and beat him to the table. I’m sure I’ll have to pay the consequences later, but it’ll be so worth it.

I rush down the hall, not knowing if he’s even awake yet. I peak around the corner to see if he’s in his room then I hear some commotion in his bathroom. Just two feet away from me I see mom’s vintage, victorian chair that she idolizes so much. Quickly, I snatch it and tilt it up against the door jam as I slowly pull his door shut. Hoping that I don’t capture his attention in the meantime. Just like that he’s trapped, so I take off to the dining room. As I enter, mom already has the table plated and ready for us to sit. She looks at me and eagerly asks me to go gather everyone. But as I am too lazy at the moment, I just bellow for them instead.

“Dad, Remi, Mom said it’s time to eat.”

Few moments later, I can hear dad’s footsteps coming down the hall and at the same time Remi screams my name in anger. As dad walks into the dining room, both him and mom glare at me. At the same time then both ask.

“What happened this time?”

I just look casually at them both, as I hear him scream my name even louder.

“I don’t know why the baby is screaming like a little girl.”

“Maybe someone flushed his favorite dolly.”

Guess they didn’t think that was funny because Mom just stood there tapping her toes.

“Go fix whatever you have done, Nay.”

“We don’t have time for this.”

“Your father has meetings to attend to.”

Dad decided to chime in too.

“Your mother is right, dear.”

“Stop picking on your brother and let’s sit down to have breakfast as a family before I have to leave.”

“Fine, I guess you two win this time.

“I’ll go let baby boy out of his room so we can eat.”

Remi-

That damn baby sister of mine, doesn’t know when not to cross the fucking line. Knowing damn well I have shit to get done today she wants to go be childish. Standing at my door, I can hear mom and dad letting her have it. I understand she likes to joke around, but she doesn’t comprehend that there is a right time and a wrong time to do it. Right now is the wrong damn time. I can feel the anger bubbling up. It’s only a matter of time before my wolf takes over to break down the damn door.

Nayeli-

I took my time as I tiptoed down the room listening to him mumble under his breath as I got closer and closer to his room. Then the shouting started once again.

“Nayeli, let me out now.”

“I know you’re behind this.”

“If, I know you, you’re probably right outside the door having the time of your life.”

“When are you going to start acting your age and knock this nonsense off?”

Obviously, brother bear can’t take a joke. It’s all shits an giggles though when he’s terrorizing me. I let out a sigh and reply back just as sarcastic as him.

“Well, dear brother, maybe when you do the same.”

“You know, since you’re the next alpha?”

“Better hurry, don’t you have to attend meetings with dad today?”

I stood there with my arms crossed at this point. My eyes are rolling back about as far as I could let me. I, politely, moved the chair then he slung the door open. Soon he was staring right at me with anger in his eyes. I just turned around and walked back down the hall. I knew he would be hot on my heels. As we both entered the dining room, a smile grew across my mother’s face.

“The love you two have for each other still amazes me even when you torment each other.”

“I hope you never lose the bond you share.”

She clutched her morning coffee tight as she spilled her heart out. Dad, on the other hand, was already had his nose so buried into the newspaper making sure he hasn’t missed anything happening in the area. Being the Alpha, he has to know all, one slip up could cause so much chaos. After about five minutes of skimming all the pages, he folds back just like he found it and looked straight at Remi. Impatience now stretched across his face.

Remi-

Fumbling around now, trying to stack my breakfast on my plate, I see the death stare. I get that we are now on a tight schedule, but I see his other offspring on the other side of the room just enjoying herself. She should take the brunt of the the impatient ass that his is about to be. But who am I kidding, little princess never gets in trouble. It’s always you’re the next alpha this and you’re the next alpha that. She has no future responsibilities so her life is a joy ride. As long as she follows the basic wolf traditions she’s free as the next rogue. Snapping out of my pitty, I noticed the glare is still at full strength.

“Remi, we’re soon gonna have to hit the road if we are gonna make these meetings on time.”

“Lamont is a very impatient man and he’s an out right asshole when kept waiting.”

“Why are we meeting him again?”

“He’s a lawyer, correct?”

“Yes.”

“He’s not only the best lawyer, he’s also the alpha of a very power pack of hunters.”

“If you need someone found he’s your go to. So it’s best to stay on his good side.”

After a few minutes of going back and forth with the dad, I look over at Nay, who seems to be in dreamland. As much as she drives my nuts, I’d still do anything for her. She’s still a naive little girl still, protecting her will as be my priority. Just then she perked up and looked right at mom.

“I don’t have to intern today so I be spending the day with Lakken.”

“We are having a picnic down by the lake for lunch.”

Now talking about a touchy subject, this one burns my ass every time she brings that damn wolf’s name up. Biting my tongue as much as possible, I snap in my response before mom has a chance to even register what she just said.

“When are you going to realize that its wrong for you both to be together.”

“You are not mates. You are not meant for each other.”

Nayeli-

This fucker, I was not fucking addressing him. I was specifically speaking to mom on purpose. The way I see it is, If I’m not making eye contact with you when I start speaking, nine times out of ten, I was not inviting you into my conversation. Whatever beef he has with Lakken, he needs to get the hell over it. I love him and for that exact reason my blood began to boil to the point where I wanted to slide across the table and strangle the nosy prick. As much as I tried, I couldn’t help but to explode.

“Remi, it’s none of your damn business who I date.”

“We love each other and you should respect that.”

“Just because you don’t have a girlfriend or a mate, you shouldn’t try to take my happiness away from me!”

“Nay, what about the happiness you’re stripping from your true mates?”

“His and yours? What if your mate is out there searching for you?”

“What gives you the right to strip him of his happiness?”

“And the same goes for his mate.”

My parents just sit and listen, I know they aren’t happy about it but they never push me like Remi does. I know that my decision might disappoint them, but at what point do I get to put myself first? I know by the look my fathers gives when Remi voices his opinion that he sides with him. Mom, on the other, I truly believe that she sides with them but she accepts that I am doing what makes me happy. Lakken, Lakken makes me happy. No amount of endless put downs or or death glares will change how I feel. I’m not going to lie that, in my chest I can feel the sad flutters and in my throat I feel the scratchiness of the crying fit I’m holding in.

“What about my happiness, Remi?”

“Shouldn’t I put my happiness first?”

" Why can’t you just let me love who I want to?

“Because Nayeli, it’s not right. We are wolves and you’re acting like a selfish human.”

He pleaded and I do see the genuine concern in his expressions. But I still don’t believe that the nature of my wolf should over come my heart. My wolf is my protector right? So, shouldn’t she be happy with what makes my heart complete. Then he continues.

“They may call us nasty animals, but they bounce from human to human like a toddler bounces from toy to toy.”

“Always out for a new flavor of the week. Hell, for some of them, it’s the flavor of the day.”

“We’re not wired like that, we are given a soulmate that is purposely mated to us. We complement each other.”

“You will never changed my mind Remi.” I screamed at him as I ran to my room.

With a swift motion, I slam my door and I face dive right into the abundant amount of pillows on my bed and weep. One day they’ll understand, one day.
