"I that this plays with fear on various levels. Most people are afraid of getting old and dying in poor conditions. Then theres the horror of war which haunts humanity. And that's before even what might be lurking in the darkness in the future chapters! I especially liked the part about how it was war for the rats as well, I felt it was exactly the sort of thought that might go through a soldier's head- a kind of dark humour in a dark situation. Also the very frank way in which the author describes the relationship the man has with his children, this gives me a sense that they aren't afraid to call a spade a spade and in horror, unpleasant details are important as those are the things that stick in your mind late at night."
