Chapter 1 - Hello?
Today is my first day of school. I walk through the halls and watch the kids play with each other. I walk into the classroom and see a pretty lady with black hair and green eyes wearing a pretty purple dress. That is Momma’s favorite color. She smiles at me and I stare at her.
“Hello Tayci, I am Miss White. Welcome to our classroom.”
I want to say something but Momma told me not to. I stare at her and she smiles at me. A girl with brown hair in two braids and green eyes, wearing a pink shirt and blue jeans, looks at Miss White.
“Miss White, can I go to the bathroom?”
“Yes you can. Mary this is Tayci. Tayci this is Mary.”
“Hi Tayci. Do you like to draw?”
I want to say yes, I love to draw but Momma doesn’t let me. Momma says I can’t speak. Instead I nod my head, yes. Mary smiles.
“Let’s play together Tayci!”
She puts her arms around me, I’m not sure what to do so I stay still. She smiles then goes to the bathroom. I watch her leave.
During the class projects I work by myself, I don’t think the other kids want to work with me. During lunch the kids run around and play. I see Mary with another boy who looks like her. Brown hair, green eyes, blue shirt and black jeans. She plays with him. I look around and see a group of kids talking and laughing, they are looking at me. I put me head down and hear footsteps. I look up and seem them circled around me. One girl with blonde hair and blue eyes points at me.
“My Momma says that you can’t talk. She says that your are weird.” She says
They all stare at me. Then a boy with blue eyes and black hair points at me.
“Haha! She can’t talk! She is a freak!”
They all point and laugh at me. They laugh and call me names, names that are not my own. I lower my head, unsure what to do.
“Hey! Leave her alone!”
I look up and they all turn around, staring at a boy with green eyes and brown hair. She looks just like Mary, but a boy. She stands next to him.
“What are you going to do if we don’t, huh, Aaron?” The blue eyed boy says
“Leave her alone Adrien! It is not nice to bully people!”
“Fine then!”
They all leave. Mary comes and sits next to me. I look at her and then the boy, Aaron.
“Sorry about them Tayci, they are not nice to anybody. Don’t worry we will be your friends.”
“Yeah! Hi! I’m Aaron, Mary’s twin brother. Don’t worry about Adrien and Allison, they are just bullies.”
I look at them and say nothing. Momma told me to say nothing to anyone. I want to say thank you, but I can’t. Instead I smile at them. And they smile back. Aaron and Mary are my friends and they look out for me.
