The Asylum
“AHHH!” I couldn’t feel anything, “I CAN’T!” Hi my name is Vanessa Reynolds. I am known as the most dangerous person at the Asylum. What’s an Asylum? You may ask. It’s where the most craziest, dangerous, and mentally unstable people in the area go to to get ‘fixed’. Right now I’m being very bored in my cell. You thought I was being tortured right? Well I am, but just not the way you were thinking. There are only 10 more minutes till lunch and I can’t wait to see my boyfriend, Nathan, and my best friend, Kendall. We all have been here since we were kids. Nathan got here because he got caught trying to poison his family and friends, until one of his brothers called the police on him. Kendall got here when she was 9. She killed her mom for leaving her and her dad. But no one really cares what people do anymore. It’s time for lunch. The bell rang. I got up as fast as I could and started to pull back and forth at the cell. “Let me out!” I screamed. “Calm down, Nessa!” Said my security man. His name is James, he just turned 17. His dad is also the Master of the asylum. That’s probably the reason he’s here. He never really liked me and I never asked him but I didn’t have to. I would hate me too if I were more annoying. “Your so annoying,” I said. “Your the one to talk, your always groaning about how bored you are.” He complained. “Oh shut up, no one asked you to guard me forever.” There was some silence. Until I heard James start to laugh or cry or something. I didn’t know. “Why do you hate me ?” I blurted out. “What?” He asked. “I don’t hate you Nessa,” he explained, “I never hated you, I just have a different perspective than you.” He said it as if it was true. I didn’t believe it. I couldn’t. How many times has he made fun of me or tried to make me fall in one way or another? “Nope, not true, I don’t agree. You have bullied me for the past few years of my young ages.” I laughed. “Well believe it because when I was 9, I remember having a crush on you when you first got here. I used to think that you were a badass girl!” He laughed with me. “Oh?” I was really surprised at the fact that the only reason he made my life a living hell was because of a little tiny crush he had on me. “How did you make that nickname for me?” I asked. “I made it up, I guess” He answered. “Okay..can you let me out now, orrr...” I said getting back on track. I stood back as the door opened up. “You know what comes next.” He said. I rolled my eyes with anger. He blew into his whistle, then a lot of men with guns came in with a chair. I sat down as they strapped my arms into sleeves and across my chest and hooked them to the chair. They tied my ankles in chains. I was unable to move. This woman came in and tied my hair in a donut bun just over my neck. “Ready to go,” James said. One man started to push the chair, while the men with the guns walked around me. I always thought this was too extra for a lil young girl like me. I just laughed at the thought of what kind of stupid thing I would’ve done to get the Military Air Force and Government afraid of me. Sometimes they go far enough to put a mask on me. More men with guns crowd around me as we walk by. We use the elevator since my wheelchair can’t go down stairs. As we entered the cafeteria, the soldiers started to yell “Stay Clear! Code Orange!” People pulled prisoners off tables in front of me and moved them away. The prisoners moved aside whispering my name. I was very popular in the asylum. Every time I walk around, they move. I know they are afraid of me, like everyone else. I could see Kendall and Nathan both sitting down already, with their food eating. The men stopped walking, stomped their foot down, and carried their guns higher. They formed a circle around me. The same woman came in and unstrapped me, her hands shaking. I kind of felt bad for her, why couldn’t the big men come and do it? Why her? As soon as she untied me, she ran like her life depended on it. I got up and stretched my arms and cracked my neck and knuckles. All the men left on different ways. I went and sat down with my friends. “Hey!” I said. “What’s up V,” said Kendall. “Hello Princess” Said Nathan with a smirk. I sat down and kept talking. I remember when I first met them. The time I met Kendall was weird, I saw Kendall walk into the lounge with the wheelchair by the enterence. The had a mask on because she tried to bite the soldiers. She was shaking her head trying take the mask off until a paramedic came and shot a tranquilizer into her arm. She fell fast asleep. She was only nine years old and acted like an animal. Later when she calmed down, She walked up to me, grabbed my shirt and told me to watch out for her and to stay away. Then, not even three seconds later, the soldiers looked at us and came by to surround me again. One of them told her to stay away from me. We fought and argued and threatens one another until we pulled a truce out of each others ass. We became best friends. The story of how I met Nathan is different though. We were both 13. He came in a wheelchair looked at me and winked at me. He sneaked into my cell while I was asleep and scared me half to death. He grabbed my waist and pushed me into the wall. “Hey, I’m Nathan.” He said, “and I’m about to fuck you up.” We started to kiss. It was interesting and that’s how we started to date. From time to time we sneak out and hang out. Now we were eating fish and fries. Both moldy but we were used to it. We talked until we had to go back to our cell. I layed down on my bed. “James...JAMESS!” I liked to annoy James a lot at night. “what?” He answered. “How long do you have to take care of me?” I said but since I was exhausted it sounded like a moan. “Oh gawhd, Nessa don’t say it like that..” he hesitated. I like to play with him like that. Sometimes he would threaten me. I laughed at the thought. “Not for long.” He said. I got up from my bed. Confused. I was thinking of what that meant all night. By the time it was morning, I was so tired and still my eye opened. BANG BANG! I heard James knocking on my cell. “Wake up sunshine!” He yelled. “Time for Breakfast!” I got up and ran to the cell. Dark circles around my eyes. “James!” I called, “Where am I going?!” I stretched my hand out. Desperately. “To high school. A public one. We’re going to release you.” I put my hand back inside slowly. My mind couldn’t process this fast. I fell down slowly still grabbing on to the bars. I had a confused, sad, disbelief face on. I stared out with some tears on my face. “No..wait...hold on...I- I’m leaving?!” I said standing back up. “Apparently, my old man said it’s a good time for you to experience being a teenager. Also if you fuck this up, you’ll never leave again and we’ll bring u back.” I was still very confused, tbh a lot of emotions where running through my mind at this point. “When am I going?” I asked. “In 6 hours..” he said in a simple voice. I dropped my jaw. I ran to my bed and the men with guns came back and took me to breakfast. I saw my friends there again. I told them the whole story of me leaving and they looked at me in a weird way. “What do you mean ur leaving us for a crappy ass school?!” Kendall asked. “Why would u leave me V?” She seemed very pissed. She started to cuss and scream and made everyone look at us. “I don’t want to leave y’all but this is a good time to see outside of here..to see the world and other people.” I said. I kind of felt a little guilty but it’s not like it was my idea of leaving. “Okay well we support you no matter what you decide just please think about it.” She has always been like a mom to me but also like a sister. “What is the whole point in going to highschool anyway and like why can’t we come too?” Nathan asked. He seemed very mad too but I couldn’t blame him either. “I have no idea but I’m going and I’m not going to forget y’all.” Now I was sounding like I was going to die. I needed to calm down. Everyone was already gossiping about how crazy it would be to not be moved from their eating tables when I entered. Everyone wanted me dead. When I first came they gave me all sorts of attention and I could see why people would get jealous or mad even. Once we finished eating I went to pack some stuff and layed on my bed. This was a lot. I still couldn’t take it in. I haven’t been out in years and just the thought of me going outside was sort of overwhelming but also exciting. Silence filled the air and thoughts filled my head. What was the point in Highschool? Where am I going to live? Could I make friends? What will happen to my old ones? What about boys? Forget boys, what about FOOD? So many questions but so little time. BANG BANG! It was James again. “Goodbye time.” He said as he opened the gates and let me out to a corridor and to the auditorium. All the prisoners were all sitting down in chairs and I was under the spotlights. The master came outside and took the microphone. “Today we will be letting one of our people out. Vanessa Reynolds is one of our youngest citizens that’s been here for years and as you can tell she is excited!” He put his hand around me and gave me the microphone. Silence.. “hey....umm...I’m going to miss you all.... and...I wish you all good luck..” it was awkward my hands were getting sweaty. I gave the mice back to him and left. Nathan and Kendall were waiting for me in my cell. “I guess this is goodbye..for now.” Kendall said. She hugged me and I hugged back. “I’m going to miss you, V.” Her voice cracked and she started to cry. Just the thought of me not being able to be here for her made my heart break. I started to tear up. “I’ll miss you too.” We both let go as she stepped back and wiped her eyes. Nathan came up to me and gave me a long kiss. He held on to my waist and I held his face. Kendall started to giggle. And so did we as we broke the kiss, he didn’t let go we touched foreheads. He started to tear up too and at this point I was sobbing. “Promise me...that you’ll come back for me..” he said in a sensitive voice. I started to laugh. “Of course I will come back for you and You.” We all hugged. James came in. “How cute, hope I’m not disrupting but it’s time Nessa.” He said. Nathan gave him a dirty look and Kendall laughed. We stopped crying and all of us laughed even James. “Ready?” They asked. I nodded “No.” I said.
