Guardian Angel

That wonderful feeling I get when I spread my wings, stretch them wide, and ready myself to fly. I can feel the gentle breeze playing beautiful notes on my feathers. That sound, music to my ears, making my heart beat faster in its cage, threatening the bones to move for it to come out and fly with me. I close my eyes, take a deep breath, open my hands and let my body fall of the edge of the highest tower in town. With the weight of my body pulling me down, I bat my wings twice before opening my eyes and fly, aiming for the moon. It’s moments like these that make me feel how special I am. I’ve been flying for centuries now, and I never grew tired of this.

I was doing my nightly routine, flying over the city, making sure nobody sees me, flipping directions and singing to the moon and the stars to keep shining like they always do. I saw a couple walking on the streets, hand in hand. Apparently, the guy was telling her funny things while she was giggling and slapping his chest lightly from time to time. It looked nice to have someone to share your nights with. I never experienced this feeling before, because I couldn’t risk them knowing my true identity. Although it gets very lonely, nonetheless, I managed and learned how to keep myself occupied. But how I wish I had someone just like this couple.

I shook these thoughts away and continued with my journey. That was until I saw a man, standing on the edge of a building, looking desperate and ready to jump. For a split of a second I thought that my sight was tricking me, but when the man jumped, all the doubt that I had in me dissipated and I found myself flying in the direction of this man. I opened my hands and caught him mid-way. Shocked, the man looked at me, his eyes the size of saucers, then cupped my cheek with his right palm. “My guardian angel” was all he could mutter before surrendering to the darkness.

“What? Excuse me sir? Please wake up!” I couldn’t understand the situation that I was put in. What am I supposed to do with him now and where should I take him? This man is so heavy and he definitely looks like he was at least 6 feet 2’.

“Sir? Please wake up, come on!” but no answer. Well, definitely no answer if the man is unconscious. What are you expecting Cora?

I had to take a decision and I had to take it fast. First, because there was no way I was going to roam the city while holding an unconscious man in my arms, and second, because it felt like I was holding a huge rock or something and my arms were going to start hurting me if I didn’t put him down soon. After weighing my options, I decided to take him back to my place. I flew in through the window of my bedroom and placed him on my bed since it was the most comfortable in my small apartment.

Living alone didn’t require a huge house and extravagant furniture, since there would never be anyone to share them with. For this reason, I liked to keep it simple. My home consisted of one bedroom, one living room, a kitchen and a bathroom and it was more than I needed.

I placed the man on the white sheets, and I couldn’t help but look at his face. I couldn’t believe my eyes! This man was so handsome. He had high cheekbones, a defined jaw, with a roman nose in the middle. His hair was jet black cut short, with a five o’clock shadow. I wondered why he would want to put an end to his life. He was no more than 36 years old, and life was ahead of him.

I removed his shoes, grabbed a chair and placed it next to the bed hoping he would wake up in a better shape and leave soon. The longer he stays, the longer I’m put in awkward situations.
