They sat there on the rooftop with a candle burning right beside them. Matt always thought fire was beautiful. The way the flame flickers back and forth. It was a quiet night out and he looked over at her and felt his heart melt. She was even more beautiful than the fire. He could admire her forever. But she started fading away from him. He reached out for her, but the more he touched her, the more she faded away. He started panicking and felt his heart sinking slowly. The flame was flickering violently now.
"No! Please! Don't Leave!" he shouted. But soon it didn't matter. She was gone. He sat there starting at the empty spot on the roof. After a few seconds, he started sobbing to the point where his throat hurt. Matt sat there with only the light of the candle glowing as he stared out at the empty field with the presence of the stars surrounding him making him feel more alone than ever.
When Matt woke up, he thought it was just a dream. But when he checked his phone and went to her contact, he was horrified to find out that it did happen and he lost her. As he got ready for school, he felt his heart get heavier with every minute that passed by. Arriving at school was a completely different story. When he saw her and they made eye contact, he could see the hurt in her eyes and it only made his heart break more. What was he thinking? She looked away and quickly finished at her locker before she hurried off. He wanted to run after her, to kiss her and hold her tight. But he didn't. He let her go. He felt like shit the whole day. As soon as he got home, he immediately went to his room fell onto his bed.
For months after that, he didn't chase her. Didn't try. He thought she might come back and tell him she loved him. But that never happened. And as each day passed, he noticed her gaining her happiness back and go back to the girl he originally fell in love with. And with each day, he felt even more empty. It got to the point where he felt nothing at all. He was numb. He regretted not going back to her when he had the chance.
When he saw her at school with another guy, he lost it and walked out of school and all the way to his house. When he arrived home, he collapsed onto his bed in tears. It was in that moment that he realized he lost the only girl he ever loved. He opened his drawer and took out the pills he had been planning to use for some time now. He took more and more until he felt nothing and started to feel reality fade away as he slowly lost consciousness. In his last few seconds on earth, he went back to the rooftop and remembered her beauty. He smiled until the world around him was black.
