First flight
Have you ever wanted to fly? Sure you had dreams that you could conquer the skys , but what if one day you woke up and this dream became a reality. What if the comic book hero you fantasized about is now you. This is the story of how the real superman came into existence.
My name is Kent Clarkson and I know what your thinking, this is a joke and I'm insane. I thought so to until that morning in July when my flying ability turned the world upside down.
I know your curious about my name, so close to the comic book super stud. Well my parents were great practical jokers and really bad gamblers. On a bet one night, if they lost, they would have to name their first born a super hero's name. Thank god my parents did have a heart and decided to mix it up a bit.
It didn't go as planned.
I grew up on a small farm outside of North Carolina. My mother, god bless her heart worked in a shoe mill just outside of town. My father was a bridge engineer for the county. They both were loving parents who always put their family first. My father is still alive and is now retired. Mom, she passed when I was 25 with a bad heart.
I was 5 years old when I found out I could fly. I was jumping on my bed one morning when on the last bounce, I tripped and went right out my bedroom window. Have you ever had a dream where you flapped your arms to keep yourself from falling. That was me. I flapped like there was no tomorrow. That's when it happened. I was floating in mid air. My arms didn't make a difference, so I thought that this idea was useless so I stopped. So there I was looking in my window from two stories up.
My mother must have heard me fall and came up to my room. She was frantic and looking all around my room. She then went over to close the window. That's when she fainted.
I managed to get myself back into my room and tended to my mom. I touched her shoulder, shaking her, "mom, are you alright?"
She opened her eyes, looked at me wide eyed and said, "you, you were outside, I saw you! You were standing on thin air. How could that be?" She looked at me and then said, "you think I'm crazy don't you?"
I didn't want my mom to think she was a nut case so the quickest thing I could tell her was, "Mom, I think you tripped when you came running into my room. You must have hit your head on the edge of my bed. I've been lying here this whole time".
She looked at me, looked back at the window and said, "hmmmm, yes but it was so real". She was now rubbing her head. She smiled at me, grabbed my chin and said, "I love you Kent, I'm going to get some rest now". As she was walking out of the room rubbing her head, she looked back at the window with a puzzled look and then closed the door.
I was looking forward to getting back to school. The first day back was always exciting. I had so much to talk about. As I entered my first period class, there she was, Lisa Hamilton. I met lisa in my shop class last year. We clicked right away. She was a bit nerdy but so was I. We hung out last summer spending most of our time at jollies burger just outside of town.
On my fifth birthday my mom bought me the coolest bike. It had a banana seat and monkey handle bars. I already had my baseball cards installed and to the annoyance of all the neighbors, it would make an annoying clacking sound. It was the cool thing to do, so no one cared, except Mr Donaldson. He would sit on his porch at night and would yell at the kids as they rode by his house.

My first day of school was memorable to say the least. I was late for my first period because my stupid lock would not open on my locker. As I walked into class I could here a few kids in the back laughing. There was a desk empty at the back of the room and coincidentally was right next to Lisa.
Mrs Sanchez stopped writting on the chalk board as I walked in. The class went silent. She paused and looked at me and said sarcastically, "Kent nice of you to join us" She continued writing and said for us to open our books to chapter 1. I nervously looked over to my left and Lisa had a big smile on her face.
The bell rang and I was off to my next class. There was a group of football players talking to the new freshman girls. As I walked by, Jimmy Conners, our starting quarterback blocked my path. He was showing off. I didnt want any problems, he was twice my size. I tried to walk around, and he grabbed my arm. I cannot explain what happened next. My body temperature went sky high. Time seemed to have stopped and I was the only one moving through it. There was no sound but my breathing. I walked to the steps only a few feet away and sat down and hoped that what ever was happening, soon would pass. I closed my eyes and when I opened them everyone was gone. A security guard approached me and asked me if I was ok. He told me that school was let out almost an hour ago.
I was on my way home and about halfway there my bike got a flat tire. I was about 2 miles from home. So, I thought to try a test. I started running as fast as I could and the just jumped into the air. Looking back my form was hilarious. It worked and there I was 10 feet off the ground. I pushed harder to gain more height and suddenly I was a thousand feet up. I didnt have a clue of what to do, so I just thought why not copy my favorite superhero. I extended my arms and off I went. At first I didnt know the speed I was going but the 2 miles I was supposed to be at was long gone. Now, flying is crazy to master and the landing was another story. I stopped in mid air floating like a balloon. I remember just thinking about landing and then without notice, I was dropping like a rock. I started to panic as the ground was coming up really fast. I needed to stop falling or I was going to be part of the landscape. Then without notice I started slowing down and touched down with Hollywood finesse, it just wasn't as pretty.
