Chapter One - You join his school
Evelyn's alarm blared, waking her up at 0700. She groaned rolling over and turned it off. Rubbing her eyes she looked at her desk and saw her new school bag sat waiting for her. She groaned again. Evelyn was starting sixth form today, which was daunting on its own, but she was also starting a new school.
Since her mother died a few years ago she had been to a new school every year due to her fathers work. She should have been used to it by now but she still got first day jitters.
Evelyn crawled out of her bed and shuffled to her desk chair where she had laid out her clothes the night before. Slowly she pulled them on. Finally, a year without a uniform. Thanks to being in sixth form now she no longer needs to wear a uniform and can now wear what she liked. Within reason of course!
Evelyn pulled on her black jeans and mustard yellow cropped jumper that hung loosely around her waist and brushed her hair. Her long blonde hair fell in gentle waves down her back, falling around her elbows. She looked in the mirror, tilted her head and considered tying up her hair but decided against it. Shes always preferred her hair down. Her mother was the same. She takes one more look at herself in the mirror, smoothing out her jumper then grabbed her bag and headed downstairs into the kitchen. She spots her father sat at the table reading a newspaper. She drops her bag next to her chair and leans down to kiss him on the cheek.
------------------------------------------------------------
"Morning Daddy" she sings and she heads to the coffee machine and pours herself a cup.
Her father scrunches up his nose putting down the newspaper to look at her.
"You sleep well Eve?" he asks.
She laughs "Daddy stop trying to read my mind, I slept well, and I'm looking forward to today. Don't worry about me"
She sits down opposite him and sips her coffee.
"I'll probably go to the school library after school today but i'll be home for dinner, am i cooking for you as well?"
Evelyn's father shook his head, "i'm interviewing at a new company today, i'll probably be home late, but if you can leave me something that would be wonderful Eve"
Evelyn nods, finishing her coffee and getting up. Her father being a mind reader gets hired by companies that are going bankrupt to talk to every employee and find out whats wrong with the company so that the owners can fix the issues. He started small, helping cafes find out where the employment issues were, or where the company money was going but he soon grew a reputation for his skills and started his own business, being hired by larger companies to fix them.
He has a few mind reader employees now that work with him so they can work more efficiently in larger companies. Her father asks the questions and his colleages make notes on the answers, one makes notes on the ones they give verbally and one makes notes on what they're actually thinking.
Then they compile all of the information and give it to the owners of the businesses. Its a great job, and her father is in constant demand but it means that they tend to move yearly so they can be near the businesses hes helping, and means he works late. Her fathers work is the reason she's moved around so much. She used to stay at home with her mum but after she died she had to travel with her dad.
Evelyn walks to the front door and grabs her car keys.
"Have a good day daddy!" she yells and heads to school.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Evelyn pulls up into the school car park and looks at the large building in front of her. This school is march bigger than her old school. She gently sighs to herself, turns off her car and gets out. As she leans back into her car she hears someone laughing.
"NICE ARSE" someone behind her yells.
She spins around to see who yelled at her and sees a tall, blonde haired guy smirking at her while walking towards her.
"I thought it was a new arse i saw. Hi I'm Alex" He holds out his hand and Evelyn stares at it refusing to shake it.
"Evelyn" She nods curtly "excuse me"
She locks her car and walks passed him. She can feel him watching her as she walks away. She turns her head to look at him again before heading into the main building. Her shoulders slump once shes inside and she groans. He wasn't in uniform which means he's either loitering, or he's also in sixth form. She crosses her fingers, hoping it was the first open.
After speaking to reception she has a look at her schedule and walks to her new form room. When she gets there she see's a girl sitting on the floor, outside the room engrossed in a book. She coughs gently so she doesn't startle her.
"Hi I'm Evelyn, is this the form room for Sixth Form one?"
The brown haired girl puts a bookmark in her book and looks up at her nodding. Her cheeks flushing pink. She tucks her book into her bag and stands up.
"I'm Ava" she mumbles not making eye contact with Evelyn.
"You new here?" she mumbles, still looking at the ground.
Evelyn nods smiling at Ava
"Yeah, first day, sorry for interrupting your book, anything good?"
Ava looks up at her and smiles, Evenln sees a glint in her eyes
"Oh yeah, its a classic romantic, girl falls for the school bad boy, he's not interested but she wins him over" she blushes again.
"I love a good romantic book, how about you?"
Evelyn laughs "i used to, but with almost everyone having a skill these days, its hard to believe its real anymore"
Ava nods "yeah i guess so-" she pauses.
"Erm, do you have a skill?"
Evelyn opens her mouth to answer when a teacher opens the door.
"SIXTH FORM ONE, TIME TO COME IN"
Evelyn closes her mouth and nods to the door following the teacher in. Saved by the bell, or the teacher in her case. Evelyn was one of the few defected humans who didn't have a skill, though she liked to think her being able to block her dads mind reading made for a pretty good skill. She smiles to herself slightly as she walks towards the teachers desk.
"Good morning Sir, My name is Evelyn, I'm new to the form"
The teacher nods looking at her.
"I know, i was expecting you, glad to see you arrive early. Please stand at my desk while everyone sits down then I'll introduce you and assign you to a seat"
Evelyn nods and stands to the side of the desk out of the way and watches as everyone walks in.
First was Ava who followed her in and sat in the front row closest to the door. Then another brown haired girl with glasses walks in, nods at Ava and sits down next to her, pulling a book out of her bag.
Must be friends Evelyn thought.
A group of guys walk in next and Evelyn groans internally, among them is Alex the guy who yelled at her this morning. He was the last person she wanted to see this morning.
At the end of the group is a blonde haired girl wearing a short skirt and hanging off the arm of one of the guys. She giggles at something he says, kisses him and sits down next to him, all of them taking up the back row bar one seat and some of the row in front.
Slowly minute by minute more and more people trickle in until the last person comes in. Five minutes late. She rolls her eyes.
A dark haired guy strolls in, hands in his pockets. Headphones in. He walks to the back of the room and sits in the seat that was left empty by the group.
She shrugs. Must be part of the group
The teacher bangs a block on his desk and everyone turns to look at him.
"Good Morning Sixth Form One, my name is Mr Edwards, most of you know me from last years maths, this year I will be your form tutor. Don't think i'll be nice to you just because i'll only see you in the morning and the afternoon for form time. If you misbehave, I will give you a detention, with myself"
He pauses, looking around the room, eyeing up the group at the back.
"Now on to new matters"
Mr Edwards looks at Evelyn and ushers her towards him.
She walks over and stands next to him. He places a hand lightly on her shoulder.
"This is Evelyn, she's new to the school, please welcome her into the form. I'm sure you will all get to her know her soon but no chatting in form time."
He points at the empty seat in front of the dark haired boy. Evelyn looks at it.
"This will be your assigned seat for the year. Don't forget it. Please go and sit in it."
Evelyn glides between the aisles and without looking at the guy behind her she takes her seat. This is NOT where she wanted to be sat. To her left she feels someone laughing quietly under their breath. She turns to her head slightly to look at the person and rolls her eyes when she sees its Alex.
Mr Edwards begins the morning by taking the register and reading through the announcements. Evelyn tunes out and waits for the bell to ring.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Evelyn leaves her third class of the morning and heads to the library for her lunch break.
Shes never liked the first few weeks of a new school, having to eat alone in the canteen, so a few schools ago she started having lunch in the libraries until she made friends.
As she walks in to scope the quietest corner she notices Ava from this morning, her head in another book. Beside her is the other girl she noticed also sat with a head in a book. She heads towards them and sits down opposite them.
"Hi" she whispers. They both jump and look up at her. Ava smiles.
"Oh hi Evelyn, you a library girl too?"
Evelyn nods "always peaceful. plus hard to enjoy a canteen alone, downside of being the new girl" She laughs lightly.
Evelyn and Ava start chatting while they have their lunch. Evelyn learns that the other brown haired girl is called Sophia. She has really bad anxiety and doesn't talk much. She also learnt that Ava and Sophia are really smart. After comparing school schedules she realises their in top set for everything and share none of her classes.
Just as they're discussing the books they're reading at the moment the bell goes signalling lunch is over. They all get up and head to their form room. When they walk in, Evelyn waves to the two girls and heads to her seat.
She drops her bag on her desk and sits down, reaching into her bag to pull out her sketch pad. From the corner of her eye she notices the dark haired guy standing in front of her.
She looks up at him, and smiles politely. He has dark green eyes that seem swallow her up. The dark haired boy puts his hands on her desk. Leaning forward so he's practically nose to nose with her. She leans back in her chair frowning at him.
"Hi, I'm Liam, its Evelyn right? Got a nickname?"
"Yeah its Evelyn. My friends call me Eve" She emphasises on the 'friends'.
Liam laughs at her as he stands up straight. As hes about to say something else, Mr Edwards bangs his block on his desk signalling the form to take their seats and be quiet. Liam winks at her and walks behind her to his desk. As he walks passed he whispers "Laters Eve"
Evelyn rolls her eyes and turns her attention to Mr Edwards who takes the register and starts drawling about notices and clubs starting. Behind her she can here Liam and another boy talking. Mr Edwards coughs and looks at them.
"Liam, Mason, detention. Don't talk when i'm talking. You two know the rules."
Evelyns eyes open wide, they didn't even get a warning. She turns to look at Liam who just sits there and shrugs at her. She turns back to Mr Edwards as he starts talking again. A few seconds later she can hear Liam and the boy called Mason talking again.
Idiots, form time is literally fifteen minutes can they not sit quietly for that long
She hears Liam chuckle under his breath
Shit, is he a mind reader. Trust my luck to be sat in front of one.
She feels liam gently kick her chair and she turns around to glare at him.
God what is his problem. Why did i have to be sat here of all places. I bet he's the reason this damn seat was left empty. Noone wants to sit here.
She begins to sketch in her notebook to clear her mind. Next thing she knows the bell rings signalling form time is over. She stuffs her sketchbook and pencil back into her bag and stands up. As she steps away from her desk she slings her bag onto her bag but feels someone knock it off. She spins around to see who did it and comes face to face with Liam. She steps back leaning into her desk.
"May i help you?" she scowls at him.
He laughs at her raising his hands in surrender.
"You a smart arse Evelyn or are you joining me for science?"
She rolls her eyes at him and pulls our her time table shoving it in his face. He reaches for it and pulls it out of her hand looking at it. He hands it back grinning at her.
"Eve, my new friend, you're with me."
He grabs her bag out her hand. Slings it over his shoulder and throws his arm around her.
"Come on, I'll take you"
She groans reaching for her bag but Liam turns his torso so she cant reach.
that's the last thing i want
Evelyn shakes her head shrugging his arm off her shoulder.
"No thank you Liam, i can get there myself, can i have my bag back?"
she holds out her hand for the bag but Liam surprises her by moving his arm from around her and taking her hand instead moving quickly to pull her out of the form room
"No Eve, I'm being a friendly form room neighbour and walking you to class. Now shush and follow me"
Evelyn drags her feet as she follows him trying to pull her hand out of his, but he tightens his grip when she tugs.
He stops suddenly outside a classroom and she stumbles into his back.
"Ow" she rubs her face
how the hell does he have such hard muscles on his back
Liam turns around and grins at her holding out her bag for her. She grabs it, and after checking she was actually at the right classroom, she heads inside. As she walks to the teachers desk she can hear someone in the hall talking to Liam.
"Dude, that girl so isn't into you"
Evelyn smirks to herself
Thank goodness someone noticed
