Prologue
"Lucian"
"Lucian, can you hear me?"
Her cries were desperate.
"Please...... you can't."
"LUCIAN"
An ear-piercing wail jolts me awake from my slumber. It's the same dream that's plagued me for years. My mother's cries.
Sweat is beading off of my forehead. I roll over and slide from my bed. Sauntering over towards the balcony, I open the doors feeling the cool breeze. A flash of lightning illuminates the night sky for a brief moment. Closing my eyes, I take in a deep breath. A musky, earthy smell permeates the atmosphere. The pitter patter sounds are soft from drizzling rain.
My mind starts to wander back to the dream. No matter how hard I try to repress what happened on that day 10 years ago, I relive it in my dreams almost every night. The sins of my pack. The same pack that I now have to lead, knowing that they are the cause of my family's demise.
I try exhaling out all the tension, but flashbacks of blood, red, dripping from a lifeless hand flash before my eyes. I can almost smell the pungent metallic odour. Growling I open my eyes, slamming the doors shut. My heart racing, as I try and expel the images from my mind.
Walking towards a table in the far corner of my bedroom, I grab onto a bottle of Woodford reserve. Taking a big swig of the amber coloured liquid, feeling the stinging of the whiskey as it flows down my throat. I place the bottle back onto the table and turn towards the door. Fumbling with the handle, I make my way out and head towards the front door.
I'm apprehensive. My mind is racing. I need to shift.
Once I'm outside, I call upon my wolf. I can feel my bones start to crack, my fingers extending into claws... my body starts to contort and take on an animalistic form.
ARR-OOOO-OOOOO
I call into the night taking off at full speed. My paws sloshing in the damp grass.
Another sleepless night.
