Blue Butterfly
She walked through the colourful park on a bright summers day. Birds were chirping overhead and kids were playing and laughing all around her but she didnt notice any of it. Her eyes were fixated on a small blue butterfly that was aimlessly fluttering around. Her legs moved almost automatically tracing the movements of the butterfly. A football rolled in front of her followed closely by a confused child who cautiously grabbed the ball. He took care to avoid coming into contact with her.
A strong breeze blew through the park disturbing the fallen leaves and blowing the womans hair in her face. Her heart raced as she cleared her hair and searched around for the butterfly. But where was it? Her eyes darted from left to right, top to bottom but try as she might she couldnt see it anywhere. The wind must have blown it away. She stood in the middle of the park alone and anxious. She blinked rapidly as if to clear her eyes and for the first time she looked around at the park. Something in the far right corner caught her attention. She headed straight for it.
There nestled in the shadow of a few trees was what looked to be a large broken 3D puzzle. She knelt down and picked up a piece which was almost the size of her hand. It looked just like a normal jigsaw puzzle piece but it was curved slightly. She picked up a second piece and tried to fit them together. It didnt fit. She sighed. This is stupid. She thought as she stood up and began to walk away. But it was almost as if there was an invisible force pulling her back. She succeeded in ignoring this force for a few more steps before finally succumbing and returning to the puzzle.
Her frustration built as piece after piece refused to fit. Her brow became furrowed and her tongue stuck out of the corner of her mouth as she focused on the task at hand. Finally she let out a triumphant shriek as she felt the satisfying sensation of two pieces sliding together. It was the breakthrough she needed as after that piece after piece began to come together and form a large grey sphere on the ground in front of her. Her furrowed brow was now replaced with a grin and there was almost electricity in the air as she raced through the rest of the puzzle. Just as her momentum peaked she stopped. She frantically searched around but there were no more pieces left even though an empty space in the sphere was glaring back at her. Her heart sank. She continued to search but to no avail. Dont tell me its missing. She thought dismayed. But im so close.
Just as her hope began to fade, she spotted a dog in the distance with something grey clutched in its mouth. She cautiously approached the dog and as she neared it she confirmed that the item clenched tightly in its jaw was the missing puzzle piece. Now the challenge was how to get it from the dog. She looked around her and located a large stick. She picked it up and held it in between her and the dog trying to entice it. Her heart was pounding rapidly, dogs terrified her. It took but a few seconds for the dogs eyes to lock on to the new target. As the woman swung the stick from left to right, the dogs tail began to wag rapidly. With a small yell she threw the stick as far as ahe could muster and without any hesitation the dog bolted after it. Thankfully he had dropped the puzzle piece in the process. She greedily snatched the piece and raced back to the puzzle.
She braced herself as she slid the last piece into place. There was a small click and she watched in bewilderment as a multitude of colours spread from where her hands rested on the last piece and engulfed the entire sphere. She couldnt help but laugh as a concoction of confetti and glitter rained around her and the sphere from the trees above. An unfamiliar warmth filled her body. Only after the last piece of confetti fell and the warmth escaped her body did she slowly get up.
Now what? She thought as she looked around bewildered. A large smile broke across her face as in the distance she spotted another puzzle. She sprinted towards it almost toppling over a man that was drifting through the park with his eyes fixated on a small blue butterfly.
