Mama

Cubone had tried. He really had. If he'd been stronger, this wouldn't have happened. Mama would still be alive if he could have done….something. Anything. But she had hid him from them. She had told him not to leave that spot until the bad humans were gone. She said that they wanted his skull that had belonged to his father once. Cubone could remember refusing to kill Mama when he was born so he had sought out his father and killed him instead for his skull. He loved Mama too much to ever hurt her. But not being able to protect her had been just as bad to him.

The bad people wearing black with the red R's had seen Cubone hiding, but Mama wasn't going to give him up. So they beat her to death with their Gravelers. Cubone would have died if it hadn't been for the spiky haired trainer. Cubone remembered seeing the trainer heading toward Pokémon Tower just fifteen minutes before the incident. This trainer had been carrying a Raticate into the tower, and Cubone knew what that meant. This boy had been burying a friend that had passed from this world. Mama had told him all about the tower and that he should never go disrupting the spirits in the tower.

The trainer had warded off the bad men and then scooped up Cubone into his arms. Cubone couldn't leave Mama, though. He squirmed in the boy's arms, wanting to hold Mama. Maybe if he had shaken her hard enough, she'd have moved. Cubone had managed to escape the trainer's arms and had shaken Mama's body. He'd cried out to her. He'd screamed to her.

"Mama! MAMA! Get up! Please get up! Wake up, Mama! You have to! I love you, Mama! I need you! I'm just a baby, Mama! Please don't be gone!"

Then Cubone had turned around again when he'd heard a noise from the boy. The boy had tears on his face as he looked down at Cubone. The boy had sniffled but with Cubone's eyes on him, he'd begun to sob as he'd fallen to his knees. He'd cried for his Raticate. He'd cried for the loss of Cubone's mother. The boy had looked tired. He'd looked like he wanted to go home to his own mother. Cubone had given Mama a kiss on her nose before he'd climbed into the trainer's arms and cried with the boy until the sun had set.

The trainer had been nice enough to help Cubone bury Mama's body in Pokémon Tower. But Cubone could feel that Mama's spirit was angry. The trainer had taken him to a nearby house, and returned to the tower to mourn.

"But what about Mama?!" Cubone had said as the trainer left him. "Mama is unhappy! We need to help her!"

Now he sat on the floor in the house, moping. The girl in the house wouldn't let him go to Pokémon Tower. At least, not again. He'd tried going alone before, but a Gastly had knocked him out. The girl had brought him back but now she wouldn't let him leave.

Suddenly, a boy with a red vest and hat walked into the house. The girl told him what had happened to Cubone's mother. Cubone looked down at his bone club as the boy approached him. The boy crouched down to Cubone's level so the Pokémon looked up at him sadly. The trainer smiled as he rub Cubone's skull. Then he gave him a wink, and suddenly, Cubone felt that this boy could help Mama. Mama would be laid to rest.
