Chapter One: Blood Family

Blood Family

"Delicious" she whispered to herself, smiling enough so that her pointy fangs showed. The blood dripped down the sides of her mouth, red as ever. She rubbed her arm against it, leaving a trail of red on it. Her mother frowned at her, displeased.

"Manners, please" her tone was, as always, firm yet elegant. Elena never quite understood her and her eternal desire to be correct and eloquent. To fit in with the most sophisticated assholes of the Community. Elena, much like her father, operated under a different philosophy: just let it be.

Elena replied with a simple sarcastic smiled as she took another sip.

"I need you to behave, please. We're having guests this weekend, remember?" this time her tone shifted to a more angered one and this time she wasn't just talking to Elena.

"Ana, dear, we know. But the guests aren't here now, are they?" Her father spat, as if to start an argument. Her mother though, didn't even flinch. She stayed put in her ornamented seat next to Marian. The candlelight lit her face just enough to see her blood red lips pursed together.

"How long will they stay here for, mum?" Florin shot, also in defiance, and Elena could see a smile forming on Father's face. Ana did not like being called mum. She seemed to think it was too mundane for them, for her. Mother was the appropriate term.

"As long as they deem necessary. They are hitchhikers from Britain. I'm sure they won't be here long" A long pause. Hitchhikers. Memories flushed Elena. Damn, they were delicious.

"Don't even think about it, flower. Don't do yourself such harm" Father said, clearly addressing her and her blood-thirsty eyes, though Florin had had quite a similar reaction.

"Sorry, Father, it's just...last time we had hitchhikers over we-"

"I know what we did, flower. But, you know that we don't do that anymore, right?" his tone had changed too. He was not angry though, just determined. Just passionate. Elena loved that about him.

"Yes, I know. I am sorry"

A beat. For about six seconds all that could be heard was the metal spoons clashing with the metal vases in front each one of them. Then, a loud gag. Florin spat a piece pig skin into the table. Her mother shrieked.

"Ew, ew, that was skin...That's disgusting!" Florin jumped out of his chair throwing his arms in the air. Obviously, overreacting. He seemed to have trouble processing the change, maybe more than any of them. The clean bright red meal courses had been suddenly disrupted. Now, all they had was dirty animal blood. One would think it wouldn't be much different, yet they could tell. All of them prefered mortal blood, surely, much more than the cheap replacement they had invented. But, more than anything they all loved Marian and he was sure this was the way to go. So, naturally, they all followed.

"Florin! Please!" Mother yelled. Elena couldn't help a sutil laugh from escaping her blood soaked lips. Father copied her, both trying to hide their amusement from them.

"Sorry! I can't help it! It's so...yuck!" he said now a bit more calm.

"Florin, darling, that is the less manly thing you've done in years. And that's saying something!" Father stated followed by a strong laugh that felt like it shook the floors. Elena burst into laughter, and Florin who had grown accustomed to those types of comments, joined them. Ana only smiled shortly, but that was enough to let them know she also found the situation slightly laughable.
