Prologue. Dark Plans
"So you mean to tell me, that you're still a virgin?" my friend, Latoya asks incredulously.
"Yes, I am," I say calmly. Truth be told, I have no idea why she's so surprised. I mean, I've never told her about any of my sexual escapades with anyone other than myself, because I've never had any.
"Why is it so surprising to you?" I ask.
"Well... I don't know, the way you talk about sex, you just seem like an expert at riding còck."
I just about die laughing, even as I push her off of the bench beside me.
"You're a bitch," I say through my laughter.
I'm so busy laughing, that I don't notice the bane of my existence approaching me.
"Rachael," I hear him say; I recognise his voice immediately, and my laughter ceases.
"Ivan," is my curt response.
For as long as I can remember, we've been enemies; we went to the same pre and preparatory school.
I remember in grade four, he put worms in my lunch kit; I was so angry that I retaliated by catching live cockroaches, and putting them in his schoolbag.
I hate wild cockroaches, they're disgusting little fuckérs who only serve the purpose of flying in your face and crawling under your clothes and spreading E. coli - but I was determined to fùck him over.
And then, he ended up in the same high school as me.
Great.
Please note the sarcasm.
"You look good today; if only looks could compensate for how much of a prick you are," I say to him calmly, and he reacts the way that he always does; he laughs.
"Oh honey, you know that your opinion doesn't matter to me."
We just stand there, looking at each other calmly, neither intimidated by the other.
Suddenly, his lips stretch into a broad grin.
"Don't worry; one day, you'll get what's coming to you. But until then...", he pauses, looking down at his watch, and then looking back at me with a sneer replacing the grin from earlier, "we should get to class."
Just as he says this, the bell rings, signaling the start of my Unit 2 Literature class. He walks off, and I roll my eyes as I walk towards our class in the same direction as him.
Now I have to find out what Ivan has planned for me. Fantastic.
But truly, this is just another day in the life of Rachael Thompson. We hate each other to the point that we sometimes go out of our way to make life difficult for each other.
Stupid?
Yes.
Immature?
Hell yeah.
Do we care?
Nope.
We've always been enemies; we will always be enemies. Nothing is going to change that.
