Beginning of an End

Somewhere in South Asia

"I am telling you she was there in my dream, all decked up in her traditional suite.."

Aubrey stared at the old piece of rotten meat, spewing bullshit about how the Moon Goddess told him to create a ritual to honour her, the same goddess that they didn't believe in until today. This convention was turning out really bad and she couldn't be more pissed off. Well, that's what she thought until another one of the older gentle-boot-licking-men spoke on his concerns regarding a free republic. Apparently, a hierarchy had to be constituted to ensure peace in what they liked to call Wearth.

That name was an optimum evidence of just how much of their brains had been utilized in the process. When one man suggested a strict code for women to ensure they remained pure, she decided she has had enough. Standing up, she looked down at the bunch of idiots who called themselves the constitution committee of Wearth.

All the eyes in the room turned to her standing tall at the head of the table and she allowed herself to ravel in the power she possessed. Once she was sure that the old men understood exactly who was in control, she exhaled a loud, deep breath, to make sure she didn't accidentally kill a man with her wolf's power.

"Gentlemen, I'd have you know that the world we want isn't exclusively ours. It belongs to the werewolf population and I think it highly inappropriate for us to be the only ones dictating their lives. This meeting was to announce the discovery of a new home for us. The constitution and rules will take some time but we'd figure something out, together." Her voice was as gentle as she has always spoken, which is not very much but that's the only tone that could make these shitheads understand that their privileged selves weren't going to make any rules, not until she had a wolf.

Once the committee understood it's boundaries, she'd talk about the plan. The plan that would go downhill if any of the chauvinistic, blood-hungry 'nobles' of the Red Hunt pack found out before she could win their respect. She decided toworry about that later because right now her prime concern was to figure out where her mate, Yuvan was. Yuvan had gone to drop off the human family that had accidentally helped them find the portal to Wearth. The newly weds weren't ignorant of the other-worldlies. Afterall the husband was nicknamed 'The Almighty's son', but that didn't clear her suspicion about him being a devil in disguise.

'Well, if she loves him, who am I to question him?' She thought with a bored sigh and moved along to try and find her way to her new mate, the Alpha of the Red Hunt pack. They had completed the ceremony just the previous night and announced it to the pack today, before the convention was called.

She was still reluctant to let any of those men decide the rules of the new world but she knew her mate would disagree, not because he wanted to but because he had to. She figured that they'd talk about it tonight. As she moved into her house, she found her phone lying on the armchair, by the small photoframe that proudly displayed her entire group of best friends chilling in one of their many secret spots. She guessed it was a sign.

She was about to call her best friend and platonic soulmate to retell the tale of her success- their success actually, when she felt her world spinning out of its axis. She wasn't used to losing control, but it was the one thing that terrified her when she felt her legs give away under her. She tried to grasp onto her conscious by a tight hold but ended up losing control of both herself and her wolf.

Her wolf howled in agony but she and her human body remained immobile with a brain that seemed to lag behind the world, slowing down with every second. As every second slowed to the speed of an eternity, the pain hit and she completely gave into the blackhole that sucked her in.

Time here was endless, the only thing that seemed uncertain in this world that seemed to have all the answers. She felt like she had spent eternities here and yet, even that time felt too insignificant for her to truly grasp the vast power that surrounded her and tried to pull her in further. She forgot everything she stood for and everything she stood against, only the quiet place and its magnificence wrapped around her mind.

She felt a pull, not into the abyss but away from it. Reluctant to leave this warm embrace, she ignored it, until she felt the abyss push her away. She wanted to cry over the rejection, beg for a chance to stay longer but she stood again, immobile and helpless. This time, she was successfully pushed out of the warmth and into a luminous place that stung her eyes.

"Aubrey, are you alright baby?"

She heard his voice luring her out of the pain that seemed to pinch every organ of her body, all her limbs were sore and her chest felt heavier with each breath. She slowly turned her head to find the grey eyes that she has loved for three years looking down with concern. Suddenly, the pain in her limbs didn't matter and her heart fluttered in her chest, making her feel lighter.

"Alpha, I'd take this moment to congratulate you on the pup. We'd have a new prince very soon."

The sickingly sweet voice of the pack member irritated her ears but the words shocked her immensely . Her hands automatically fell to her abdomen and she wondered if the abyss she went into was just a routine for every Luna.

But in the heart of her heart she knew that if she was pregnant, she'd feel happy and not like a part of her soul was just carved out of her body. It was inexplicable, the pain in her body and the strain in her heart. And yet, she faked a smile and lived through it, hoping she'd feel better once she was alone with the love of her life and their child.

Eventually, everyone cleared out and the Alpha couple were left alone. This time there was no silence or awkward greetings like before, they chatted about the ways of life and how incredibly happy they were. Slowly, Aubrey's smile became a real one and the ache in her heart calmed a little. She found herself forgetting about the mysterious lands and enjoying the warmth of her mate's love. She became hopeful with the new chapter in her life.

Little did she know that this wasn't the beginning everyone wanted, it was the beginning of an end.
