Prologue

He was beautiful.

Even from across the cemetery I could see that. All I could really make out in the moonlight was his eyes, but that was enough.

I don't know what it was about the cemetery that felt so inviting. Almost as if something pulled me in years ago. This is where I came when I needed silence. A safe place to think. I needed out of the house tonight, and was on my way to my favorite tree across the cemetery when I stopped.

I felt someone watching me.

I looked all around me, until I caught his gaze. Leaning against the mausoleum were two of the brightest blue eyes I'd ever seen, staring right into mine. I should've ran, nothing about this scenario seemed safe, but I was frozen. It was almost as if he was looking right through me. I didn't feel uncomfortable though. I felt.. protected. Surely if he wanted to hurt me he would've by now.

We stared at each other for what seemed like hours, though I'm sure it was only a couple seconds. I felt myself being pulled to him. Curiosity maybe? Whatever it was, I wanted to talk to him. I took a step towards him, but a rustling sound tore my gaze away from him. I looked around me, but all I could see were the leaves blowing. The wind had picked up, but I hadn't noticed. I turned my attention back to the stranger. I wanted to know why he was here, and why he was watching me.

But he was gone.

My heart started beating faster as I glanced in every direction searching for him. There's no way he could've gotten far, I only looked away for a few seconds. I wanted to run home, but I was too afraid to move. Afraid he'd jump out at me or something.

But everything was quiet. Even the wind had died down. I stood listening for a few minutes, but everything remained eerily silent. I wanted to get out of here. I took one last look around, deciding it was safe enough to move. I turned towards the gates and started walking the familiar path home, not daring to look behind me.
