Prologue

"The Ghost and Charlie Dusenberry" by Randy W. Zeis

Pg. 1 TGACD R.ZEIS

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.”

-George Bernard Shaw

Gus Dusenberry died at 9:02 in the morning. He was 90 years old.

He had been tending his new tomato garden when he suffered a major stroke. The last thing Gus remembered, after the tremendous pain in his chest, was staring up at a beautiful blue Texas sky. Then came a very bright light.

“He’s all set. His wife and relatives will be here to greet him soon.” The taller of the two angels stared down on the new arrival. “Right about now he’s dreaming about one of his happiest moments ‘down’ there.”

If Gus had been awake, he would have found it very hard to look at the angels. When on a mission, angels glowed brightly as they did now. The more important the mission, the brighter they got.

The angels were keeping watch over a quietly sleeping Gus as he lay in his new bed. When Gus awoke he would find himself in a new home. The home would be like the one he had always wanted with a view of mountains and lakes.

“I understand Gus had no major problem getting the OK to move ‘up’ here,” said the shorter of the angels. “But, I also heard that he might have some unfinished business ‘down’ there.”

The taller angel shook his head in agreement. “That’s what I heard too. Since we are now assigned to Gus, we’ll know pretty quickly what the Boss wants from him. If Gus has to go back ‘down’ for a visit we’ll be the ones to prep him.”

As the two angels speculated about what Gus had to do ‘down’ there, Gus was dreaming about a special day in his past. As the dream began, the angels noticed the smile that began to spread across Gus’ face……

Crow: 'Among a thousand sorrows I stand alone.': This is my first review for anything I have read so far and I must admit I have only read the first two chapters at the moment, but everything works for me: the dialogue; the characters; the images; the humour; the pacing; the building of a place in my mind. If 'grandma has cooked a supper that he'd...

dawsonpb: Overall: excellent. It's a story that needs to be told. I would have preferred to have Adam the center of the story. At times, it appeared as though the author was performing a balancing act between Micah's story and Adam's. Micah's story brings richness to the story, but should it have equal emphas...
