Prologue
“I’ll be back in 2 days, Karina. Your Auntie Mara will be watching you for now”. Those were the words that my mother had said to me before she left.
Karina’s mother, Faya Apple Red, hadn’t come back. Karina gently tugged her Auntie Mara’s royal blue dress. The words Karina remembers saying are, “Is mommy coming back?”
That afternoon, Mara called the I.S.S. (Investigation Service Station).
“Officer Red has... she’s been missing for 2 weeks.” The lady on the phone replied. Auntie Mara has talked to the lady for an hour!
Mommy.. isn’t coming home? To Karina a little part of her had felt like her mother had left her behind.
For the next 4 years, Karina had known that something had happened to her mother in her gut.
“I’ll find you mom.. and I’ll rescue you!”
