Fire on Fire by Sam Smith

This song holds a personal spot in my heart because it has helped me realize a part of myself. Each lyric of the song is so powerful and has helped me and is still helping me to love myself more each day and be who I am meant to be. Sam Smith has created pieces of music that have impacted so many people, especially in the LGBTQ+ community.

If you didn’t figure it out by now, I’m a lesbian and have been for a while now. I came out to my parents two months ago and they didn’t accept me. I felt like that they despised me and hated my guts. I began to hate myself, thought there was something wrong with me. They say it’s just a phase and I will get over it (obviously it’s not). When I first heard this song I cried. For starters, the chorus, “Fire on fire would normally kill us. With this much desire, together, we’re winners. They say that we’re out of control and some say we’re sinners. But don’t let them ruin our beautiful rhythms.” These lyrics were huge for me because these lyrics are about how straight people that are homophobic and people that are part of the LGBTQ+ community or supporters attack each other every day. With that much passion for hating each other, we can use it to love each other and improve each other as humans. That would be a dream, but in reality, religious people and homophobic people just think we are the “devil’s child,” or that we don’t belong in this world. People that don’t accept us constantly hurt us, mentally, emotionally, and even physically. We go through so much pain and we slowly start to break, but we shouldn’t let people that don’t love us for who we, stop us from loving ourselves and being the best version of us.

The next part that is special to me, “Cause when you unfold me and tell me you love me. And look in my eyes. You are perfection, my only direction.” Just because we are part of the LGBTQ+ community and religious people and homophobic think we are demons or the children of Satan himself, doesn’t mean we are evil. When you actually begin to love us, you would start to see the inner beauty we have. I was meant not to be part of the LGBTQ+ community. This community is perfect and so pure and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

The final part of the song that really touched me was, “ When we fight, we fight like lions. But then we love and feel the truth. We lose our minds in a city of roses. We won’t abide by any rules.” As part of the LGBTQ+ community, we go through so many battles; with other people, politics, and even the people so close to us. When we fight back, we fight back strong and with so much passion, but when we start to love others and begin to feel, we take down those walls for love. We are surrounded by people who act nice towards you, but deep inside they want to hurt you. As people, we live in a society where you just can’t be different. People would judge you if you are a special way, but people, especially if they are part of the LGBTQ+ community should forget about those guidelines and rules, and be your most authentic self.

In conclusion, this song has helped me realize that even if the people around me can’t accept me for who I am, this is me. I have learned to love myself and truly accept myself for who I am as a person. Now I know there is nothing wrong with me, but something wrong with my parents because that can’t accept me and for who I love. This song has taught me that the LGBTQ+ community has fought so hard to get where we are today and each day we fight harder and louder. I am proud to be part of this community, I AM PROUD TO BE GAY!!
